CWS Thread - OutsiderFan - 06-17-2019

Hat's off to Mississippi State for scoring 4 runs in the bottom of the 9th to beat Auburn 5-4, with kind of a lot of help from Auburn's Third Baseman. 

I'm personally rooting for a Mississippi State vs. Florida State Final. Neither team has ever won the CWS.  MSU is apparently on their 4th coach in 4 seasons, and FSU's Mike Martin is in his 40th and final one.

Monday:
Arkansas vs. Texas Tech in Loser's bracket
Florida State vs. Michigan in Winner's bracket

Tuesday:
Louisville vs. Auburn in Loser's bracket
Mississippi State vs. Vanderbilt in Winner's bracket

That's a very good question.  Maybe we need to start calling it the Power 4 conferences and leave the Pac-12 as it's own level, between Power 5 and Group of 5.

Yeah, I mean, it’s been *checks notes* one year since the last time a PAC-12 team won a college World Series.

Ok, ok.  Let’s look at wins by conference over the last 10 years:
PAC-12: 3
SEC: 5
ACC: 1
Sun Belt: 1
Big-12: 0 (last CWS was in 2005)
BigTen: 0 (last CWS was Minnesota in 1964!)

Yeah, it might as well be Miss State. That was a monumental breakdown by the Auburn 3B. Sometimes it could be a cruel game.

In a really great game, Texas Tech beats Arkansas 5-4, to send Hogs home. Giants 8th round pick Caleb Kiilian pitched 7 innings (7.0 6 H 3 ER 1 BB 9 Ks) in a no decision for the Red Raiders.

Texas Tech will play loser of Michigan vs. Florida State Monday night in elimination game on Wednesday.

Michigan has come out of nowhere to arrive in sight of making the championship series. First they won the Corvallis regional, then came the real stunner when they won the Super Regional against the Bruins. Now they've won their first two games in Omaha. Their pitching and defense have been superb.

That was one of the most impressive pitching performances I've ever seen by Michigan's Lefty starter. CG shutout, 3 H 10K, 0 BB, 100 pitches total.

Speaking of Michigan, ESPN's broadcast made a point to emphasize how coach Eric Bakich wants to find players wherever they are, including "inner cities" so he can have a diverse team that "looks like America."  Kyle Peterson added this means Michigan isn't just going to be going to the showcase tournaments to recruit.  They will bring in kids who don't have the money to play in travel leagues but are still good ball players. Based on how much he emphasized he likes that approach I wondered if he wishes Stanford would do the same.

Thanks for sharing that about Peterson; would it be fair to characterize the Bakich approach as "the opposite of Harbaugh"? I also hope Stanford looks far and wide, and not just the showcase tourneys.

After rain washing out all but 4 innings on Tuesday, they were back at it in Omaha Wednesday.

Louisville sends Auburn home with a 5-3 win.

Vanderbilt gets another strong start from Kumar Rocker to go 2-0 as Mississippi State takes its first loss 6-3.

Texas Tech takes on Florida State in elimination game tonight.

Unfortunately, Mike Martin's 40-year career ends with 17 CWS appearances, but no championship, as Texas Tech beat Florida State 4-1.

It's now down to five teams:

2-0 Michigan vs. 2-1 Texas Tech
2-0 Vanderbilt vs. 2-1 Mississippi State / 2-1 Louisville (plays Thursday night)

If I had to choose one team to come from the Losers bracket to win the whole thing, it would have to be Texas Tech.

After seeing Michigan play this post season, it's really hard to pick agains them.  But they were one of the last 4 teams in the tournament as a #3 seed.  Vanderbilt has the better pedigree as #2 national seed.  But Michigan beat the #1 national seed!

Mississippi State was 47-0 this season when leading after 8 innings... until last night. Louisville scored 2 in bottom of 9th to send the Bulldogs home with a 4-3 loss to the Cardinals who trailed 3-0 going into the 7th inning.

So both my rooting interests have been dispatched now.

Final Four:

2-0 Michigan vs. 2-1 Texas Tech Friday
2-0 Vanderbilt vs. 2-1 Louisville Friday

If Texas Tech and/or Louisville win today, elimination games will be Saturday.

I think Rocker pitched yesterday. Michigan/Vandy would be an excellent series. Vandy has had a Cy Young winner and it looks like Beede's long time in brain dead is ending. Rocker is electric.

And BC, so is Butter II.

Michigan now up 12-3 at the end of six against Texas Tech. What an amazing run so far. I'd pick them over Vandy in the championship. Not just because Vandy is a lot like their victim UCLA, with strong pitching and a productive lineup that can erupt at any time, but because I don't want the SEC to win another championship.

A night after MSU lost its first of 48 games when leading after 8 innings, Louisville blows a 1 run lead in the 9th for the first time in 46 games as they go down to Vanderbilt 3-2.

Michigan vs. Vanderbilt for the championship on Monday and Tuesday.

I can’t believe how few Pitchers Michigan has used, just 3 in 3 games. It seems Vandy is deeper and better, but this Michigan team seems to have something special.

Vandy doesn't have a great and deep pitching staff,
while Michigan's arms, as you point out, are rested.
This could be interesting.
Vanderbilt's substantial edge in hitting could end up being mooted.

Michigan's defense yesterday was dazzling.
While the game was still in doubt, their infielders made several run saving plays.
They really bailed out their starting pitcher who was in trouble in virtually every one of the early innings.

Michigan overwhelmed Vandy in Game 1 and was clearly the better team in every aspect. Tommy Henry wasn’t as dominant as he was in the CG shutout against FSU, but he still went 8.1 innings and allowed just 3 runs in Michigan’s 7-3 win.

If Vanderbilt can force Michigan to use more than 2 Pitchers and win Game 2, I like their chances in Game 3. With Rocker on the mound they have someone who can shutdown a lineup, but I’ve never seen a team play as well as Michigan is right now. They are doing everything right and playing with supreme comfidence.

Didn't realize there were 3 generations of Michigan baseball players in the Kerr family (of course, I haven't watched any telecasts when they were probably being mentioned many times).

Michigan finally had to use more than two Pitchers. I’m frankly amazed they held Vandy to 4 runs.

So glad we have a Game 3, winner take all to close what has been a great college baseball post season.
