beer and doughnuts for tailgating???? - 82lsju - 07-25-2019

Quote:Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott is considering having morning kickoffs for the 2019 season and beyond, NBC Sports's Bryan Fischer reported on Wednesday.
...
"We’ve discussed it recently. That would be new and out of the box for our conference but I’ve tried to put everything on the table. There’s a lot of frustration from fans in certain markets to the late night kicks," Scott told NBC Sports. "I'd like to see one or two games this season that are 12 noon (ET) kicks be Pac-12 games and see what markets might respond positively to that."
...
The schools' involvement in the early kickoff would be voluntary.

That's funny...I'd like to see Larry Scott thrown into a small, closed cage with three hungry lions and see what markets might respond positively to that.

???

I know people are frustrated with Larry Scott, but it seems at least he is trying.

A 12pm kickoff is definitely preferable to a 7:30pm kickoff.

No, it's a 9 AM [Pacific Time] kick-off...

I do not wish to see lions throwing up, nor do the PETA people....

You have to wonder if he's a closet masochist given all the (rightful) abuse he's getting for this most inane of inane ideas.

Are you kidding? I'm not a masochist in the slightest (I consider myself pretty thin-skinned, to be frank) and I'd easily accept being publicly tarred and feathered every day if it meant I took home $5.3m a year plus lofty perks.

RE: beer and doughnuts for tailgating???? - Farm93 - 07-25-2019

You can "volunteer" for that new 9AM kickoff option or you will get the new 9PM kickoff option.

Would water polo still compete before football, if the football game starts at 9AM?

O M G, I missed the part about the timezone. Thanks for the correction.

Maybe we should have Tuesday 4am kickoffs; we could totally corner the market on people listening to the radio on their way to work.

Good luck getting your best future fan base (i.e., students) to show up at 9 AM, not that Larry Scott gives a damn about game attendance or the long term future.

That would also put The Walk at 7 AM.  Are LSJUMB members allowed to be up that early?  I suppose they could still be up from night before.

that's because you'd just stay up all night tailgating!!!!!

given how our team does in road games that start at 9am PT I'm not thinking that's a good time for any football games on the west coast.

Yeah, you're gonna get students and alumni to fill seats in the stadium with a 9AM kickoff.  Tailgates will now happen after games, and any football fans on campus will have to carefully ration their fun levels on Friday night before gameday.

RE: beer and doughnuts for tailgating???? - JJJ - 07-27-2019

From a few days ago:

Quote:That idea was instantly met with mixed reviews among the coaches in attendance.

Shaw was quoted a couple of times in the article about why the Pac-12 is falling behind as well:

Quote:Stanford coach David Shaw, entering his ninth year at the helm, disagrees. Instead, he harped on scheduling as a major point of contention. That goes for both the difficulty of the opponents and the time of day.

“It’s not a talent deficiency. A lot of it has to do with scheduling. We play nine conference games and for most of us it’s really hellacious out-of-conference schedules,” Shaw said. “You get to those times in November where you’re playing your fifth conference game in a row, and even though you’re on a roll you lose that big game and that late-season loss really hurts you. And you may be able to go to the conference championship game and win it but that late-season loss knocks you out of contention for that playoff spot.”

Quote:“I’ll go toe to toe with anyone in America that disagrees with me. When you play so many games late at night, the people in the East Coast, they started watching games at noon and it’s 10:30 at night. They’re not watching another game,” Shaw said.

I'm emailing Muir and telling him not to even think about it.

You know, even though I hate this idea generally, I did think of one and only one situation where it might be preferable: at reunion.

I remember what a pain it is for reunion not knowing when everything will be. Everything is in flux until the final week — will old friends have their get-togethers before the game or after, juggling all the panels, sessions, mini-reunions, etc until 6 days away. Really, the schools should have demanded some pre-scheduling for all reunions initially, but now, given the current situation, a 9am with advance notice could be better than the totally unknown.

But other than reunion, yes, don’t even think about it

RE: beer and doughnuts for tailgating???? - Papa John - 07-29-2019

I could understand the occasional 10 am MT kickoff for games in Utah, Colorado or, after the time change, Arizona. I'm pretty sure that some Big 12 games start at 10 am CT.
