Depth Chart vs. USC - Spiny_Norman - 09-04-2019

Rouse will stay on the left and Sarell on the right. Powell listed as a backup but per Shaw is doubtful. Lots of frosh move into backup roles on the OL. Next man up. A bit surprised not to see Grant Pease.

QB shows Costello OR Mills. I think many (including me) expect Costello will be held out. But it would be a nice surprise if he is able to play.

Grant Pease reportedly missed most or all of fall camp with an injury. I suspect that if he were healthy, he would be on the depth chart at tackle.

I agree about Costello. I'm almost surprised that Shaw was willing to hold that out as a possibility. But my non-medical opinion after diagnosing Costello based on how he looked on my television screen was that he didn't look as bad as some players do after suffering a concussion. We'll see.

Have to wonder if the OR on Costello is a jedi mind trick for U$C's weak-minded coaching staff and roster :P

Could be, but the trick could hopefully be that KJ is fine, will play, and they know it. While the play was for sure dirty and was a blow to the head, I was actually more worried about damage to his face and throat, of which there seemed to be none. I am sure they are being careful, but it may be he doesn't show any ill effects. Lets hope so!

I was over the tunnel when he walked out and have to say he seemed to be walking and talking normally and without any obvious distress or disorientation. Watching the replays on TV, it was about as "unintentional" as climbing Mount Everest. In my day, we called that a cheap shot. Today, I understand they call it "targeting." Either way, the refs blew the call. That said, it was a padded forearm to the chin, followed by the helmet to the turf. I'm sure I'd be in the hospital for a month after a hit like that, but it didn't "look" like one of those hard impact shots to the head that more obviously causes a concussion. Call me crazy, but I'm not as convinced as some that he's out this weekend. We'll all know soon enough I suppose.

RE: Depth Chart vs. USC - d4cohn - 09-04-2019

Sanborn or Riccitelli at Punter. Ryan had a tough start to his career, so maybe
playing the experienced (at least in terms of seniority, not PT) player in a hostile
road environment is a better call?

RE: Depth Chart vs. USC - OutsiderFan - 09-04-2019

I'm fairly certain if Costello was an NFL QB, he'd be playing this week. The fact he is a college player and Stanford is probably more cautious than other schools, is what makes me question if he will be allowed to play. IOW, I'm not assuming he's out for sure.

One factor to consider. The odds Stanford will beat USC with Costello are greater than the odds they will with Mills. When you consider how important it is to win this game in the context of the next two, the competitive nature of Costello may tip the scales to him playing.

Another factor is that QBs rarely take shots to the head. If the was a RB or WR, I'd be a lot less inclined to believe he would play one week after taking a hit to the head like Costello did.

And given this is a thread on depth charts, while who punts et al is important, but the fact that we have one true frosh starting at LT, and every other OL position backed up by a true frosh is by far the biggest issue both in the short and medium terms about that depth chart. It is such a serious issue, deserves its own thread TBH.

It *is* a major issue. We spent much of the off season talking about OL recruiting, past and future. See the 2019 Personnel and 2020 Recruiting threads at the top of the page.

Thanks, guess that is why they have me as an unranked frosh poster. Dangerous at LT and as a message board poster.

Dont know about that. Colleges rush kids back all the time. At least NFL players have a union to protect their interests, as ineffectual as it is.

Million dollar salaries creates perverse incentives.

It is said that playing at Bama shortens your NFL career as their practices are known for being brutal. Saban just lines up his 4/5 star first string and has them full go against his 4/5 star 2nd string. At least in the NFL, you can only do that on Wednesdays.

RE: Depth Chart vs. USC - Row80Critic - 09-04-2019

I'm hoping the trainers/doctors make the call, or at least have veto rights. They have to "clear" him after an injury like that don't they? If left up to the players, I'm guessing most of them would say they are ready to play by the time they are back on their feet....

Doctors do have veto rights. Remember a story of a kid who was a game time decision, kid and coach thought it was a go, asked for the shot to play, doctor said no. Took his helmet away. (Not a Stanford story) BTW, team doctors have biases too, just less than coaches and kids. So yes, can play a valuable role.

Nick says "No." Of course, the reasons Nick cites in this article actually support the more-Bama-injuries hypothesis...

I doubt Costello has any say in the matter. He shouldn’t. I’m confident we’re it up to him, he’d play. True of most. Which is why he won’t have a say.

Stanford has the most technically advanced concussion protocol of any sports establishment in the world. Costello is undergoing daily evaluations to detect any trace of cognitive, motor, vestibular or oculomotor disturbance. If they find anything at all he will be out.

Here is the most up-to-date protocol for concussion evaluation and treatment put out by the Stanford concussion group, much of it contrary to contemporary practice and belief:

Based on a couple of tweets that I have seen, it sounds like KJ has been cleared and will play. That is good. I am surprised to see that USC opened as a slight favorite especially with USC QB out and Stanford QB likely in.

I don't think the majority of the world yet knows/believes that KJ Costello will play. I think the line will move when this becomes common knowledge. I am sure we all hope that KJ is fine and will play.
