Directors' Cup 2019-20 -
BigEasyCard - 11-23-2019
Field Hockey finished ninth in their tournament, earning 53 points versus 0 points last year. The Cardinal won their play-in game beating Miami (OH) 3-1. Their reward was a match against undefeated no. 1 seed North Carolina, falling 4-0. Great way to start the
2019-20 campaign!
With the Cross Country NCAA Championships tomorrow we should have our second and third results for the year. Both teams finished fifth last year.
Geaux Cardinal!

Women's Cross Country finishes third, earning 85 Cup points vs. 75 last year. And Men's Cross Country finishes sixth for 73.5 points vs. 75 last year. So, we're now at 211.5 points for the first three sports vs. 150 last year.
While Football has been a major disappointment and will earn 0 Cup points, the overall start is positive.

Missing the points from winning a bowl game but finishing unranked last year means 45 fewer Directors' Cup points. So the Cardinal is 16.5 points ahead of last year's pace through 4 sports.

NACDA published the first D1 results today which confirm our unofficial total of 211.50 points. BYU is second at 190 and Michigan is third with 188.

Regarding football, you're right that we don't get those 45 points, but those 45 points didn't end up counting in our total last year. Heck, we dropped a 64 from men's tennis because we had so many other good scores. So, yes, football's goose egg is worse than last year, but it's at the margins where it likely wouldn't have mattered anyway. The most important takeaway from the first set of standings is that in the two sports that
are likely to count at the end of the year (men's and women's cross country), we increased our total over last year by 8.5 points.
We look like we're in good shape with the remaining fall sports, too.
* Men's water polo got us 90 points last year, and they'll finish at least in 3rd place this year (which would be 85, I believe)
* Women's soccer got us 83 points last year (lost in semi), and they can't do worse than that this year.
* Men's soccer got us 73 points last year (lost in quarters), and they can't do worse than that this year
* Women's volleyball got us 100 points last year, and while a repeat is always hard, we look pretty darn good. At least to get a big number, even if it's not 100 again.
Titles from MWP and WSOC would net us 27 points over last year's total. Losses in the final for both would net us 7 points over last year's total. Semifinal losses for both teams would see a net loss of 5 points over last year's standings, which would mean we're still 3.5 points ahead of last year's pace (at least, in terms of sports that are likely to be counted), however. Getting a net cushion out of the fall would be very useful as I don't expect women's tennis to repeat the 100 they gave us last year. (A good number, sure, but a step back nonetheless.) We should expect one of the other national championship teams to drop off as well. Last year was
crazy.

I thought that under the new rule you had to include football, basketball, baseball, and lacrosse.

Right, baseball, women's volleyball, and men's and women's basketball are the mandatory counters. I've got
some hope that the men actually qualify for the tournament this year and get us something other than a goose egg!

And when Stanford men's hoops starts generating points, look for the scoring system to change yet again. Looks like football might become a weak link, so maybe the next system will feature the required four as men's ice hockey, women's ice hockey, football, and bowling.

But will our sailing score offset USC's big gains in women's crew?

No way they'd double up on ice hockey; they'd probably substitute curling instead.

Too Canadian. Gotta push those East Coast sports. . . .

The obvious choice would be the credit card firm's favorite....lacrosse. Stanford gets a few token points but would help almost as much as skiing, rifle or bowling. For gender equity maybe the four will be M & W ice hockey and M & W lacrosse.

What's remarkable about that spreadsheet is not just the three NC's for 100 points each, but that Stanford has scored points in all seven of the fall sports. No other school can make that claim.
Unfortunately, once football points are assigned, well...

It is not just scoring points in all seven sports. In all of those sports Stanford finished in the top 10.

Beating Kansas would be a statement game.
I'm cautiously optimistic that Men's Basketball will earn Cup points this season. Making the tournament is worth 25 and winning one game is worth 50.
