Name for the defense - Phogge - 11-23-2019

The Red Sea because Garbers parted it.

RE: Name for the defense - BostonCard - 11-23-2019

Clever.  I thought you were going to call it the “Effence”, because we brought no “D”.

"Partly In The Backfield"

RE: Name for the defense - winflop - 11-23-2019

Crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside

We have a winner.

I’d call it the Boston Card, because, like me, it’s a bit slow and soft in the middle.

The scoreboard shout out to Phogge turned out to be the highlight of the game.

You can’t name something that doesn’t exist.

Leftcoast - Leftcoast - 11-24-2019

Very Moveable Object.

It just met a stoppable force and rolled over.

RE: Name for the defense - cardcrimson - 11-24-2019

Perplexed.

Saw basically none of the game today, but puzzled at why everyone looks at the defensive failure. Yes, they gave up two very long drives on Cal's last possessions, but just before that, they forced four straight punts, three of which were three and outs.

RE: Name for the defense - Austroturf - 11-24-2019

My name for the defense: "Late for the Party".

RE: Name for the defense - JohnR34231 - 11-24-2019

Did I just log on to the Bootleg?
Everybody trying to outdo one another with cynical, snarky comments.
Oh well, it has been that kind of year. Can't say I'm particularly surprised at the outcome of Big Game  given how the season has gone.

It's called gallows humor.

But frankly, the epithets ring true for how the defense has devolved from a once formidable unit that could keep Stanford in any game to one that can lose any game, particularly when the contest in on the line.

In the 2019 season, Stanford ranks 95th (out of 130) in yards allowed per game (429) and 76th (out of 130) in points allowed per game.  Going back to the last year in which Stanford's D was truly solid (2014), the rankings were 5th (out of 130) in yards allowed per game (287) and 2nd (out of 130) in points allowed per game (16).

Stanford's record in 2014 was "only" 8-5 (looks like a dream from today's perspective); but 3 of the 5 losses were by a FG (USC, Notre Dame and Utah in 2OT), so Stanford was in those games to the very end.  And that was largely the work of the defense.  The high number of losses in 2014 was mainly due to offensive ineptitude (until things started clicking toward the end of the season with improved play from Hogan and the O-line).

So, yes, a bit snarky today; but a modicum of sullen humor is needed this morning to alleviate the otherwise pervasive gloom.

John, this is a fan site. If you want serious rather than snarky OK. Stanford is a crappy football team right now. The staff is indecisive at times (delay of game costing points), the defense has tackling problems and with a losing record and nothing much more to lose the head coach plays not to lose.

Yeah there are reasons. Any debacle has reasons. Most of them right now are excuses. And a head coach NEVER should toss his players under the bus. Rather than do that just stay away from the post game press conference and pay the fine.

I understand, Phogge. I also know that snarky is sort of your trademark, whether the team is winning or losing.
If you enjoy being that way, hey, that's your preogative.

LOL John. Comes from being at an all boys HS and doing battle with the Jesuits every day.

Yeah, it's been a crappy year, and I have a feeling it is going to get crappier next weekend.
So if you enjoy threads like this, stay tuned.

Actually,  it would be in Stanford football's schizophrenic DNA to shock the world and beat the Irish.

Maybe if Ian Book misses the plane.
I remember what he did to our defense last year.
I shudder to think what he is going to do with the one we have now.

Yes, the genetic proclivity would be there, but I believe we will need a bit of self-destructive help from the Irish next Saturday to end up with the W.  How about Book throwing four interceptions?

Right, instead of 4 TD's.
