DT Michael Williams, aka "Uncle Julio", has entered the transfer portal.
https://247sports.com/college/stanford/Article/Stanford-football-Michael-Williams-transfer-portal-graduate-139840076
The article says he's a redshirt junior. I'm assuming that means academically he's a senior? Does that mean he will graduate before he transfers?

Ok if I merge this into
This thread, where the information has already been posted?

If you want. I thought it deserved to be a separate thing since this is news and not just speculation/discussion of what might happen

So right now we know the 2020 DL can at best be?
DE Booker - Shaffer - Pakola
DT DWP - Phillips
DE Swann - Johnson - Boles
If at least Swann or Shaffer return it won’t be unmitigated disaster in 2020. If neither return, it is really bleak. The real problem is going to be 2021.
Only Phillips and Pakola, plus whoever is brought in over the remainder of 2020 and 2021. Will be available. If either Phillips or Pakola have to retire, Stanford may not have more than 4 DL on the roster, and only Pakola will have more than one year playing experience.

Yes, Williams has been at Stanford four years - or will have by the end of spring quarter.
He must graduate if he wants to "transfer" and still play football, or he would not have eligibility left.

That's too bad. Mrs. Mick and I met him and two other Stanford players two years ago at a barbecue place in San Jose. Very nice, very impressive young men. I really liked Williams. Seemed like a great guy. We talked Stanford football for a while.

FWIW, that thread had a link to a 247 article on Williams entering the portal, twasn't just speculation.

Thought he could sit out a year if he didn't graduate.

If a player graduates, is it a foregone conclusion that he can get into a masters program or otherwise stay enrolled/eligible to play?

Assuming the program wants the kid to stay for a 5th year? It's still a separate grad school application process, and the program a kid can get into may not be the master's program they preferred, but I think if a team wants a kid to stick around for a 5th year and the kid wants to stick around, they'll make it work. (And failing grad school acceptance, one could always just take a 13th quarter of classes the fall of your 5th year, then graduate with your Bachelor's at the end of Fall Quarter. The student in question would just wait to "apply for graduation" and keep taking classes, I think.)
From what I've gleaned, it's the program's call. If they want you to stay, it'll work out one way or another. If they don't want you to stick around, then you'll need to transfer out if you want to keep playing, and then it's entirely up to the second school whether you get accepted.

Good luck to him, battled back from medical. No big loss, an average player who played as hard as he could.

Does it follow that entering the transfer portal could be the equivalent of applying to a “safety school?” ie keeping his options open
Or does Occam’s Razor apply and this is just wishful thinking on my part, ie he’s gone.

The five years to play four rule still applies. Next year will be Williams' fifth year, so if he sat out he would exhaust eligibility.

Is there some leeway if there was a medical redshirt involved? Or is that only if it occurs during the fourth year. . . .

One can apply for a hardship waiver only if two of the missed years are involuntary (typically injury related, but there can also be other extenuating circumstances). Sitting out a year because of the NCAA transfer rules, while not voluntary, I don't think counts.

Williams anchored our DL against the run. We're boned without him.

Right, the question is less how good was Williams but how much better is he than the next guy.

I agree. Don't know how this can be viewed as anything but very bad news for 2020 (and not a great reflection on the program).

If a player spends four years and gets his degree, he has done all that is asked of him in my opinion. I am not going to lose sleep over whether he stays or goes at that point; as good as Stanford is, he might prefer a graduate program elsewhere, there is no crime in that. I will congratulate him on his next step in his 40-year plan.

Maybe the hammer thrower (or was it discus) who joined the team early on to bolster the O-line, can switch to the D-line. . . .

Exactly. I can't imagine he won't graduate - what's the point in transferring if he won't be able to play his fifth year?
