Jeopardy GOAT tournament -

Is anybody else watching this? I am sure I am biased because Ken Jennings lives a few blocks away from me, but I find it to be as suspenseful as any sporting event. It's like McEnroe vs. Borg vs. Connors (oops, I mean it's like Federer vs. Nadal vs. Djokovic).
I don't know about the other two contestants, but Ken Jennings is a funny guy. Every year he does a trivia night as a fundraiser for our local community center (along with another local top 10 Jeopardy champ), and the one a few months back was a hilarious send up of James Holzhauser - the guy who looked on pace to supplant Jennings' record number of wins, but came up short. Sample categories: Famous Second Place Finishers, Questions that He Missed that I Wouldn't Have, etc.
I wonder if this was Alex Trebek's idea, in light of his health situation. Crown an all-time champ to end this era.

Watching and loving it—and definitely on Team Ken! So great to hear confirmation that he is as fun in person as he seems.
The rapport between the contestants, who are by definition competitive people set up to oppose one another, has been a highlight of the tournament so far. While Brad and James sometimes come across to me as a bit more acerbic than the affable Ken, all three men are clearly united by a love of the game and a mutual respect for one another. Ken stealing James' signature "all in" gesture on last night's Daily Double and the subsequent good-natured ribbing from Brad and James was great!
The tournament has been great viewing, and while I'm rooting for Ken to prevail, it's entertaining to have a bit of a horse race, at least between Ken and James, with the greats proving that they are there for a reason and can give one another a run for their money. That said, I for one am glad that this isn't an every night occurrence. The joy of "ordinary" Jeopardy is in part the ability to play along at home. No way can I keep up with these guys! Still, sitting back and marveling at the incredible breadth of the contestants' knowledge is its own kind of fun.
Speaking of Trebek's health, while I wish him comfort and happiness and as long a run with the show as is practicable, I've heard speculation that Ken, who seems to have gone all-in on trivia in his post-Jeopardy life, might be a candidate for the next host. Do you have any neighborly insights as to whether that's something he might do? I'd certainly be in favor.

Is that in the Seattle area? Or in Utah? Or somewhere else?

Ken lives in Seattle and has for quite a while. I don't know him personally, but he is spotted with some frequency at the grocery store and at public events. The other local Jeopardy champ used his winnings to buy the neighborhood independent bookstore, so he is often behind the counter.
I do know that Ken recently hosted a show on the Game Show Network. Maybe that was an audition of sorts.

Phil Conners was far and away the best I've ever seen answering Jeopardy questions. Almost telepathic. . . .

I play trivia at a pub quiz in Santa Monica that has become known as the Jeopardy pub quiz. Many of the regulars have been on the show, including Brad Rutter. About 75 of us (including Brad) watched the game last night at O'Briens, then played our regular quiz. Brad is an excellent sport who laughed along with everyone else when the team names were read including Brad Rutter For The Bachelor and Didn't Make Final Jeopardy.
His performance was better tonight, but it's clearly a 2 person competition. Brad did have a material impact on the game by blocking James from getting the daily doubles in the 2nd game. Should be an exciting finish regardless of the winner.
Ken competed as an expert (not a host) on a recent GSN show called World's Best Trivia Show (being rebranded as Mastermind). I don't know if he would be interested in hosting Jeopardy. He does not like LA very much. Don't know if he would commit to something that required so much time here.

I'm a casual Jeopardy fan, and James seems to show real sportsmanship.
But something about him keeps me from rooting for the guy. I believe he meant will with the "tribute" to Trebek, but I thought using the term "Ghost" was an unfortunate word choice given the host's health situation.
Ken has really won me over with his sense of humor, like when after the other contestants funny (?) non-answers in Final Jeopardy he said he was going to "do a tight five minutes on airline food."

Rutter and Holzhauer have faced each other before. Rutter's team won this one.
For those wondering what's going on, it is what it appears to be - teams playing dodgeball while answering trivia questions.

Well, that makes sense, since he did write the [okay, "a"] book on humor -- Planet Funny: How Comedy Took Over Our Culture.
I was browsing through it at a bookstore over the holidays, and it was interesting [and humorous]. Maybe I'll buy it if he wins...

After his win last night, Ken has announced his retirement from playing Jeopardy. Nothing left to prove. Maybe Brad's performance was a lesson learned for Ken. I do know that Ken was quite wary of his ability to hang with the younger James. I have heard him say that he feels like he has "lost a step" since his big streak. Not that he doesn't know everything - just a concern about speed of recall.
I find it interesting and disappointing that there were no sports categories (unless I missed them - I didn't catch everything). Ken is a big sports fan, and James makes his living betting on sports - could have been epic.
And c'mon James...even I knew that it was Iago...

Seriously, how can Ken NOT be the next host of Jeopardy! It's so fairy-tale-right on so many levels. You heard it hear first. :)
By the way, he won because he didn't turtle. Just say'n.

The irony of course is that Iago is a form of the name James.

Ken was asked this question directly on NPR and said it's irrelevant because it assumes a world in which Alex Trebek is gone. Of course, that's not a denial of interest...

He's genial, witty in an appropriately dorky Jeopardy way, liked by seemingly everyone, and a legend. I'm sure they'd want to screen-test various hosts to see what clicks, but he obviously has to be at the top of the list.
The Trebek cadence and delivery is important, though. Someone with a NPR-style voice and way of speaking could do the trick and
feel the most like Trebek, but the show might be more concerned about maintaining ratings in a post-Trebek world, and Jennings would presumably be a bigger boost to that than a new face.
