ESPN: Richard Sherman's INT, Tevin Coleman's TD puts 49ers ahead

"San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman hasn't been tested much this season, especially down the stretch. And midway through the third quarter of Saturday's NFC divisional playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings, he showed why."

Night Train Lane is a legend. Deion is a legend. Richard has aways to go.

I count 13 guys in the Pro Football HOF exclusively as cornerbacks. (You can add a few other guys like Rod Woodson and Deion Sanders to get maybe five more.)

Even if he never were to play another down, I'd wager plenty that Richard Sherman will join that group.

Legend works for me.

I think of Deion Sanders and Richard Sherman as two very different kinds of players.  Sanders ran back kicks and punts, he caught passes.  He scored 21 TDs between his catches, interceptions and K/O and punt runbacks.  Sanders' interception rate per game and Sherman's is about the same (Sanders rate is very slightly higher).  Sanders, on the other hand, was known for avoiding contact.  Sherman averages about 1/2 tackle per game more than Sanders.

BTW, Sherman tweeted last night that he was (apparently random) tested for PEDs and HGH after the game.

Ah, Stanford fans being parochial. Who would have thought?

RE: Sherman is a legend - OutsiderFan - 01-12-2020

If someone only saw stats and never saw Sherman play, or more importantly, never heard him talk, they would conclude he is a HOF Corner.

The thing that makes Sherman so remarkable is that nobody at that position has been able to master it with the ability to process and translate information into physical movement like he does.  Most guys are great at that position because they see what is happening and react to it. Sherman has an unreal ability to anticipate what is going to happen before it does. So he doesn't need the more elite quickness and pure speed other Corners must have to play the game at his level.  This also likely means a longer career at an elite level as well.

It's like that quote about hockey (often attributed to Wayne Gretzky): Skate to where the puck is going, not where it has been. Sherman always has had the physicality and the competitiveness to be an elite cornerback, but he was raw in 2009 and it took him a while to develop the anticipation skills. I wouldn't be surprised if his extensive time at wide receiver has helped him this regard (like how having played quarterback helped John Lynch and Tim Smith as safeties).

We shall see.

Although it is Sherman and all bets are off, generally I would only expect a player who was confident the test would come back negative to tweet about having had it.

Well, I assume it’s not an issue. But you never know.  As for HOF, no question. He’s not Deion.  No one is.  But I think there is a solid argument that he’s the best corner of his era.  That gets him in.

In 2009 I always thought Sherman played well when they pressed and went man,  but got lost when they went zone or where they played soft etc. Seattle was the perfect team for him to play off his strengths. He’s long, physical and smart. Like most great corners, he anticipates well gets a good break on the ball.  Possibly a function of his receiving days. It has also helped that he’s been on defenses that put a lot of pressure on the QB. I don’t like Pete Carroll.  But I certainly recognize he’s a terrific defensive football coach.

Anyone who is first ballot HOF is a legend.

Especially when they were 5th or 6th round draft picks. https://www.profootballhof.com/heroes-of-the-game/hall-of-famers-by-draft-round/

Yeah CI. If you don’t make the 40 Year Decision your life is ruined. LOL.

RE: Sherman is a legend - 82lsju - 01-13-2020

Quote:As Sherman recovered from a torn Achilles’ tendon and changed teams, he faced plenty of criticism and doubt that he’ll ever be the same player he once was. But those who know Sherman best know just how competitive he is and how he would prove the haters wrong. On Saturday night, the cornerback did just that.

Not a lot of love for Lester Hayes? Interestingly, he and Mike Haynes, were named by the NFL as the best cornerback tandem, ever. In 1980, 13 interceptions during the regular season, plus another 5 during the playoffs.

Lester Hayes only had interceptions because of Stickum.
