Isaac White in transfer portal - winflop - 03-13-2020

Makes sense. With incoming class his minutes were likely to go to near-zero. I wish him well.

The lack of three opportunities for White especially near the end was strange. I guess Haase thought Wills and Davis should take those three shots.

Looks like there is now room for another scholarship recruit (cough cough Ziaire Williams cough cough), provided he actually does transfer.

He probably wants to start somewhere, which wouldn't happen here, and having played all 3 years he wouldn't be eligible for a grad transfer unless he were to redshirt next year. May as well do that at the future program while practicing with that team, and not taking up one of our slots.

A couple thoughts:
- Wills & Davis play lights-out defense. White is at the other end of the spectrum. You need stops to have a comeback
- White may be a better 3-point shooter but that's all he does. Wills & Davis can drive if you get up tight on them

I expect White will transfer to a lower-level mid-major or D2 school. I don't see him getting PT for any major conference team or top-notch mid-major.

RE: Isaac White in transfer portal - SamuelMcF - 03-13-2020

Winflop, we already have a very good 3pt shooter who can also play good defense. His name is Spencer Jones.

This now opens up a scholarship spot for a later signing possibility. Coach already did a great job finding and nabbing Jones when he needed to make a late signing, but there are currently options out there we've already been recruiting (cough cough Ziaire Williams cough cough).

That avenue was already technically open, but would've forced James Keefe to go from scholarship back to walk-on for a year - his original deal was 2 walk-on years and 2 scholarship years, but we had the space this year to award him one (as well as the 2 other walk-ons). So it looks like there are a couple possibilities here: another signing and keeping Keefe on scholarship since he'll be on one after next season anyways, or 2 more signings with Keefe as a walk-on next year. My guess - no insider info here - is option #1.

I also wonder if he'll be getting his degree. 3 years of school plus 2-3 quarters of summer school (unsure if MBB comes in June like the football players do) is basically 4 years, so it's very possible. I'd be surprised if he didn't, to be honest.

That's too bad.  I was just thinking while watching the Cal game how much White has improved since his freshman year.  He's not a great defender, but he's far better than he was a couple of years ago when he couldn't keep up with anyone on defense.  But now that we've established that Stanford is a defense-first team, his skill set is probably best-suited for another team.

Best of luck to him, and I hope he finds a good landing spot and can get plenty of playing time.

Wonder how much encouragement he got from Haase from inside information about Williams' intentions.

White is in his 3rd year at Stanford. Unless he is graduating a year early, won't he have to sit out a year if he transfers?

Yes, but he hasn't redshirted in those 3 years. So with only 1 year of eligibility left, either he would redshirt here and grad transfer, or transfer now and sit out the year. Either way, unless he's graduating now, he'd have to sit the year out regardless.

It wasn't just near the end...and it wasn't just for White.  One of the most frustrating things about Haase's "system" is that it appears to make absolutely no effort to get regular, decent three-point opportunities for our best 3-pt shooters.  I believe that Jones' first 3-pt shot in the last game [and, possibly, his first shot of the game] came with 12 minutes left in the second half, and it came out of transition, not running the offense.  Of course, it was pure and hit nothing but net.

Our offensive system is built almost entirely on kamikaze drives to the basket, with the occasional fairly-well-contested 3-pt shot hoisted up -- most often late in the shot clock -- for good measure.

Since White isn't particularly good at that, and, though a solid 3-pt shooter, not quite as good at that as Jones, it makes little sense for him to continue playing backup in an offense that pretty much ignores his signature skill.

Of course, it might just be that he wanted to go somewhere else where he could grow that man bun again...

I hope Isaac gets his degree and then has a long career back home in the ABL.

Agreed. I was responding to Bob's specific comment about playing Wills & Davis instead of him.

Stanford while scoring 52 points should have set up Jones, Terry and White for threes. The Haase game plan wasn't working. Need to adjust

There are a lot of things Haase should have and could have done with the offense, both in the Cal game and a few others. But I don't think White was a critical part of those options.

Any thoughts about when Jerod Haase might enter the transfer portal? Not pushing, because I haven't watched closely enough to have an opinion, just curious.

RE: Isaac White in the transfer portal - JJJ - 03-15-2020

Every single interview I’ve seen of Haase has been nothing but class. I’d really like him to have a hugely successful year next year and stay for a long time. Hope Muir cuts him the slack he needs. (And just maybe, even the fans:))

There is no way Muir dismisses Haase now (or before next season starts).  No chance.

Haase will get another year, and I think all of us hope he succeeds with a winning, NCAA team.

RE: Isaac White in the transfer portal - BobK - 03-15-2020

Guessing that Haase has a five year contract. If true then he will require an extension for recruiting purposes.

Then give him two or three years with a crap-ton of incentives. That way if he screws up again next year the cost to get rid of him is minimal
