Thunderdome est mort. - Phogge - 06-08-2020

Multiple bannings and complaints and RJ has closed it down.

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - Papa John - 06-08-2020

Quel est "le coup de tonnerre" (the Thunderdome)?

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - 2006alum - 06-08-2020

For those of us who don't venture to the darker corners of the web, can you enlighten us what this is in reference to?

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - BobK - 06-08-2020

The political forum on the bootleg. Or the love fest for the trumper

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - Phogge - 06-08-2020

Back whenever there was a lively Current Affairs Board on The Boot. Got very political and many posters left. The Mods axed the CEB and created T Dome for the Bull Goose Looney crowd which included ex-Stanford athletes, ex-athletes from other schools, other Stanford men and a few fans. It became a little club. Some skin was thick, some needed aloe. There was a majority of one persuasion politically and a few on the other spectrum (including some very funny guys). The site was created for a "Few." Scout and CBS took over the site and brought their own set of rules. Recently a poster was excised after a post which pissed off a number of other posters. Scout decided to pull the plug today. If there is ever "normal" football the BGL will meet again in CTG and carry on.

Bobbbbb is only partially correct. There are some on the board, including some Republicans, who don't support Trump. There is also a sense of humor over there at times that I will miss. Won't miss the politics.

Gotcha, thanks for that background. Glad we've put a lockdown on politics and quarantined COVID-19 to its own little corner. There are fewer and fewer non-insane places to be social on the web these days, so appreciative of everyone's efforts to keep this one of them.

That's slightly incorrect. The Thunderdome was created long before the CEB was axed -- though the CEB did predate the Thunderdome significantly, if I recall correctly.

The axing of the CEB and not the Thunderdome was mystifying to me because the obnoxious people who ruined the CEB (or took it downhill) were mostly Thunderdomers. But rather than shutting down the Thunderdome RJ shut down the CEB instead. It had gone down hill a bit but was still vastly more reasonable than the Thunderdome. So the logic behind the shuttering of the CEB (and leaving open the Dome) never made any sense to me.

With that said, I am sorry to see the Thunderdome go. I wasn't a fan of it, but I'm less of a fan of censorship. And there were still some decent discussions there even if it was heavily populated by some members with sycophantic and cultish tendencies.

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - BobK - 06-08-2020

So right on that boy.

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - BostonCard - 06-08-2020

Yeah, the CEB predated the thunderdome, and once upon a time it had a fairly well-balanced spectrum of views, from Dennis on the far left to McGrath and Gerald on the libertarian right.  My understanding was that the thunderdome was created so that certain individuals, who had proven somewhat disruptive to the main Bootleg board, could have their own playground to do what they wanted (hence the name).  The voices on the left on the CEB started leaving before T-domers started visiting, but the quality of the discussion did fall further once they established it as their second home (I think this was sometime in late 2015/early 2016).  I left sometime thereafter (and changed my password to a random set of letters and numbers that I would never be able tor remember, and logged out for good).  I would periodically peek in to see what the discussion was like just to remind myself that hell no, I didn't want to recover my password.

I'm not a fan of censorship, but if someone makes having a discussion so unpleasant as to silent anyone who wants to have said discussion, is that not also a form of censorship?  Since I'm not longer on TOS, IDGAF what the RJ and his corporate overlords decided, but I do have to say that I wasn't sad that the doc decided that the Cardboard wasn't a good fit for him some time ago when he made a brief appearance.

Laughable in light of the echo chamber that is the Cardboard Covid-19 forum. . . .Censorship of perspective outside the assumed "vox populi" has become the norm. God help us.

FWIW, I've been following a former Olympic athlete whose sole focus currently is to have "unpleasant" discussions. His are about race and discrimination. So I guess you'd frown upon those as well. . . .

I was one of those people that got personally attacked several times even after posting very reasonable, civil, and unprovocative things. So eventually I just decided it was not worth it. Towards the end of my many years there I did say a couple dumb things myself, but that was after years of abuse so I don't feel too bad about it. But I realized it was not healthy and left. That was after you and most of my other favorite people had been driven out or realized it was just not worth it.

... Yeah, I remember Dennis and some others that go way back like Brevinwannabe, Greyhaired Card, and probably others who are long forgotten.

And for what it's worth, Personal Legend, or just Legend, has created a Stanford related discussion board for current events. Since that's frowned on here (unless you're part of the collective) and on the TOS, I'll post a link below to help his site out, though I will be risking an almost certain Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

I personally know a number of the CEB former posters. Less as some came late
To the CEB and the thunderdome.
Dennis was a good friend died a year and a half ago. I haven’t talked to gray haired in several years.

A number of us including Phogge would get together for lunch. Fun even though I was the only liberal. But all jabs in fun at lunch

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - thatboy - 06-08-2020

Sorry to hear about Dennis. I had no idea.

Miss the CEB, never liked the T-dome until there was no place left for political discussions. I was one of the late comers and have yet to meet any in person. Love your comment about being the only liberal. At many a gathering, I've been introduced as the "conservative". Always fun to be the contrarian until it isn't. When it comes to diversity, I always thought the diversity of thought and opinion was the most important. . . .

I believe GHC also passed a few years ago.  He was always very gracious when I stopped by in Santa Barbara when driving to San Diego.

Seems like no posts for a year, at least until the most recent one announcing the demise of the t-dome.

BC, I'm so sorry to hear that.  I never met John in person but we exchanged our share of emails and messages.  "Gracious" is the first word that comes to mind when I think of him.

TDome was less a forum than a group chest-thump.  It was always about persona, one man's in particular.  The CEB was ok for a while while you, GHC and terry were posting to counter the main slant with facts, but it just wore thin.  That's when I surrendered and jumped over here, never looking back.

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - OutsiderFan - 06-09-2020

The notion every corner of the Internet is full of political discussion may in fact mean political discussion is important. The problem is most of those corners don’t have moderators, or moderators have been unwilling to moderate as much as simply throw the baby out with the bath water, by banning discussion entirely.

I know based on what I have seen on the Covid board that the people who populate the Cardboard have demonstrated the ability to have passionate discussions while being civil to each other. It’s like anything else. If people know there will be consequences for behavior, it will conform to what is socially acceptable and allowed from the highest community authority. So prohibitions of political discussion by board moderators unwilling to moderate, actually makes things worse in the places that don’t have moderation. We either experience a total shutdown of political discussion, or it is allowed to take place in a harmful, no holds barred (oh the irony of that at this moment) and totally unmoderated manner.

It’s akin to the NIMBY attitude I loathe with such great passion. By not dealing with our own angst locally, we ship it off to where it accumulates en masse other places it overwhelms. By way of analogy, it’s like if people don’t want refuse where they live, so they all go to dump it somewhere else, thinking they are getting rid of it, when the reality is the accumulating refuse ultimately contaminates the air and water they breathe and drink. Our failure as a society to have hard discussion and face difficult topics head-on by putting in the effort to create a culture of being civil to each other, hurts us in a similar manner.

The fact we didn’t establish social norms of respect for each other in online discussions since the internet started, has led to the U.S. being run by the biggest troll in the history of the Internet. I’m not blaming anyone here for this reality. It’s more of a challenge to people to really think about how we are all responsible for how things are in the world, and how our desire to be comfortable and not face difficult challenges, doesn’t solve them and only makes them worse.

It’s just a real shame we don’t have any effectively moderated political discussions in any corner of the internet, because we absolutely need them. What a failure of our society to not teach people acceptable standards of online conduct to discuss political ideas based on respect for others. The irony is if we had, we wouldn’t have as many topics being politicized and nobody would want to avoid political discussion because there would be no reason to hide from it. Anyone who runs or ever has run any Internet forum owns this.

RE: Thunderdome est mort. - Phogge - 06-09-2020

I left a number of times but I always pulled a Godfather Three Al Pacino (“And now they pull me back”). You could either get pissed or passionate or treat it as a clown alley. I went for the humor. What is funny is that the lunches became non-political (can you imagine that we have a no politics rule too?) and great fun. Hoping they resume “whenever.”

Life’s too short to be too serious. TDome was fun but ran its course. It was a bit like a dugout, if you didn’t have thick skin it wasn’t for you. I even had a USC alias that pissed people off. Probably good that it is gone but I will miss the conversations with PL and GR about the motion picture industry.

Yes, he was a good guy. His passing was a real loss.
