Biggest shoes to fill -

This article says Parkinson leaves the biggest shoes to fill for Stanford. I'm not sure if we have a player like him on the team in 2020. But then again we always have a good TE it's just the way it is.

If the season does happen, this will be the first season since 2013 we don't have a good TE. Unless one of Harrington/Fisk can actually become a pass catching threat or Bradley Archer bursts onto the scene a la Austin Hooper. Recruiting at the position has actually taken a considerable step back; not a single TE on the current roster was a 4* composite while Dalton Schultz, Kaden Smith, and Colby Parkinson were all high-4* studs. '21 won't help in this regard, but '22 might.
Fortunately we have a loaded WR corps and RBs who can catch out of the backfield.

Recruiting at the TE position has dropped off considerably since we signed Kaden Smith and Colby Parkinson in back to back years. They were both top 5 players at their position (Parkinson, I believe was the top TE recruit). The guys we've recruited since then have been more like 3* players, who may turn out to be solid contributors, but probably don't have the star power of Schultz, Smith and Parkinson (all of whom were drafted).

Lex probably meant Toohill has the biggest shoes to fill, with which I disagree and reiterate that it's Parkinson.
The OLB room is both deeper and higher-rated (in terms of recruiting rankings) than the TE room. Jordan Fox was injured all season and should've been the starter opposite Toohill. Tobe Umerah missed most of the season due to injury, and had an incredible pass-rushing sequence against UW that left my jaw on the floor. Andres Fox missed the season, and athletically he's a freak. Stephen Herron was a major 4* recruit who played 4 games and redshirted. Gabe Reid, who took the bulk of the snaps opposite Toohill, has 2 more seasons to build on an already surprisingly productive career.
Toohill's production can likely be somewhat replicated with a legitimate OLB rotation (which we didn't have due to aforementioned injuries and redshirts). Nobody in the TE room can be the receiving mismatch Park was, at least this coming season. TBD on the younger guys.

I saw the same thing with Umerah. What's sad is that we have probably watched the last of Mills, Little and Sarell. If there is a 2021 season (doubtful IMO) the QB competition will be interesting.
If there is an NFL season this year and not a college one there will be a glut of early outs next spring. I think it is only fair to let anybody, freshman to senior, leave college to give pro football a shot.

Always thought Toohill was underrated and Parkinson overrated.

I imagine we will have a lot of 3-WR sets with a blocking tight end. I imagine that there will be dramatic reduction in pass catching at the tight end position, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is made up for by increased productivity at the WR position.

I foresee the same.
We have Park's 48 targets and Cam Scarlett's 25 targets to replace, though we were kinda forced to pass so damn much that it may not be as necessary if any semblance of a ground game comes back.
I do foresee an uptick in RB targets as well as WR targets. Austin Jones, Nathaniel Peat, and Dorian Maddox for that matter can all catch it out of the backfield. So can true frosh EJ Smith and Casey Filkins. MUCH heavier emphasis on all-around backs going forward, and that's continuing in our recruiting.

I don't expect that we will watch any Stanford football this fall. If we do, I foresee defenses going single coverage on the WRs with a safety coming up for run support to put 7 in the box. Stanford has had a tough time running against defenses that are stacked to stop the run. A TE (or 2) that is a threat to release from the line and catch a pass could really loosen up the defense and help both the running and passing games. But that seems unlikely based on this discussion.

The thing about Parkinson is that he while he was a threat to release and catch a pass, he was much less of a threat to seal the edge on a running play. It is better to think of Park as an oversized receiver than a pass catching tight end.

Give me a good in line blocker and I’m happy. They can use 3-4 WR sets. And the backs. Don’t know if they will (in the unlikely event they play). I never thought Parkinson was physical enough. Essentially a big receiver who could go wide or in the slot.

Stanford’s had a hard time running period the last couple seasons. The line has allowed way too much penetration. Win up front and they will be able to run.

We have 5 returning TEs -- Fisk, Harrington, Archer and two walk-ons, McCombs and Le. We have two incoming freshman TEs -- Ungar and Yurosek. Are we writing off all 7 of them?

As pass-catching mismatches? Yes. (This season.)
As blockers? Honestly the older guys are just as good or better than Park.
It's the receiving production that can't be replaced, but as discussed above we can get that in other ways. It's been what, 7 years (?) since we haven't had a big-time receiving threat at the position. One heck of a streak, and one I hope can be restarted again soon once the younger guys gain experience.

I’ll take a year like 2013!!!!

Parkinson wasn't much of a blocker and he ran poor routes. His asset was size. Stanford had one of the best TE route runners ever in Ertz, guys who could block and catch an occasional pass like Toilolo and Dray and a flat out fantastic flexed out receiver in Fleener. Also an underrated Hewitt who IMO was wasted as a fullback. Bob Moore could do everything well. The guys they have today are not in the same universe.

Amen. He could and did do it all, both on the line and down the field.
