we were there, after the missed two point conversion lots of people started leaving. A guy sitting near us stands up and starts yelling "you'll be sorry, you'll read about it in the paper tomorrow", he was very distinctive in his red and white checked sport coat, of course he was right and we were sure glad we stayed until the end. Flash forward to ~2010, we're at Big Game and who do we see....the same guy in the same sport coat, it is showing a little more wear by then, we chat with him about the 1990 Big Game and ask his daughter who is with him if he wears that jacket all the time, she rolls her eyes starts laughing......

Speaking of NFL Today, I'm 99% sure after the 1990 Big Game, Musberger did a recap of The Play in 1982 (saying, this is how the Big Game ended 8 years ago in Strawberry Canyon) and then highlighted the 1990 game (and this is what happened yesterday, in the same locale). It was beautiful!

Glynn Milburn had the best single game i have seen jn 60 years of following Stanford football. Second is Darrin Nelson in the 1978 Big Game. Third Brad Muster against UCLA in 1984.

Best QB Game - Joe Borchard against UCLA, 1999, and i am fully aware of Brodie, Norman, Plunkett, Benjamin, Dils, Stenstrom, and Luck when I write that. Second place is Plunkett in the 1970 Arkansas game. Third, Andrew Luck in the game he apologized to the cheerleader, I forget the opponent.

Christian McCaffrey had a pretty good game against USC in the Pac-12 championship, where he threw for a touchdown, ran for a touchdown, and received a touchdown. He also had 207 yards rushing and 105 yards receiving.

The Rose Bowl against Iowa (openning with a 75 yard touchdown reception) wasn't bad either (172 yards rushing, 105 yards receiving, and a 63-yard punt return for a TD).

243 yards and four touchdowns rushing against UCLA wasn't bad either. But I think he was overshadowed by Owusu's catch.

284 yards rushing and three touchdowns in Big Game was pretty good too.

Putting aside the Revenge of the Play aspect of Big Game 1990, that one stands out because Milburn and Russell White of Cal together put on one of the most impressive dueling RBs in a game I can recall. It was a tremendous and exciting game throughout, which distinguishes it from the rather lackluster 1982 Big Game (along with, of course, which team came away with The Axe).

1990 was a great game. Milburn and White were like prize fighters who kept staggering their opponent only to have the other respond. Stanford also had Touchdown Tommy Vardell and Ed McCaffrey on that team. I loved those guys.

The thing I remember about being in the Stanford section was the way the Weenie fans rushed the field after the failed two point conversion. The idiots didn't focus on celebrating with their team and fellow fans, they ran over to the Stanford section to flip us off and scream at us. I've run on the field several times to celebrate big wins and taunting the other fans was never part of it, too much joy to worry about that sort of thing. I didn't think it would really help but was glad the fools' early rush of the field gave us 15 yards and might give Hopkins a chance to hit a 55 yarder if by some miracle we recovered the onside kick. Amazingly, it happened and we got the close call on the roughing. Game over and the Cal fans were responsible for the loss. Instant Karma.

You must be forgetting Ron Kadziel's definitive stop of John Brockington on 4th down and near goal during the '71 Rose Bowl. Also to be noted...from the first game of that same season...Mike Simone's 4th down TFL on an unnamed Arkansas Razorback to clinch the win.

That was my first time watching Big Game at Cal, my first time watching any road game, and first time rushing a football field.
4 Big Game wins and the Axe on campus every day of my undergrad experience was made possible for me and those in my class by that sequence on that day. At the time that 4 wins with the AXE on campus every day was rare, but Ty and David have added a lot of other Stanford classes to that club.

FWIW - Tomorrow will be my first time watching Big Game on TV.
I am very eager to see a game where both teams have had to practice under similar SF Bay Area level COVID-19 guidelines, but so sad that I can't be there.

To all those that have had struggles because of COVID, I hope the game will offer you a chance to enjoy at least one traditional activity.

CI the Razorback QB was Bill Montgomery. But Jimmy Kauffman tackled Trojan QB Jimmy Jones a couple of yards from the goaline the same year clinching the revenge game and paving the way to the ROse Bowl. Overall maybe the most important tackle ever.

The best defensive game by a Stanford player was hands down Ed Cummings versus Michigan State in ‘62. Literally all over the field. But the best defensive game ever in Stanford Stadium was by Dave Chaney of SJS in 1971. Seemed like he made every tackle but I think he was credited with 25 solos.

Sorry but the best Stanford QB game was Bobby Garrett in ‘53 leading SU to a 21-20 comeback win over the UCLA juggernaut of Red Sanders. He threw for over 300 yards when NOBODY did that. He also played the entire game at safety and kicked all three extra points.

Plus Garrett had two interceptions as Phogge knows. This was the first game I was into as a fan. A young fan lol

Cummings was an amazing player on a poor team.
Chaney’s performance was incredible.

I watched that game at the Casa Blanca bar in Browns Valley, CA...stepping out occasionally for a few tokes, which could explain why I have been misremembering for years, thinking their QB was Joe Ferguson. And Jimmy Kaufmann is a good call, may he rest in peace. One of the really good guys.

How quickly we forget Solomon Thomas wrecking shop in the Sun Bowl...

And yes, Borchard's day against UCLA in 1999 gets forgotten a bit, but I'm with you...it's right up there with any other single-game performance by a Stanford QB.

Milburn had 196 rushing yards and 379 all-purpose yards. The 379 all-purpose yards were a Pac-10 and Stanford record. Russell White countered with 177 rushing yards. What a great game that was!

Elway against OU as a Sophomore. Switzer said it was the best game he’d seen a QB play. But no 1 for me will always be Plunkett in ‘70 vs SC. “Plunkett Keeps His Promise”.

That was fun. Thanks for posting, BC. One of my great life memories. My brother, brother in law and I took my Dad to that game for his 70th. Joined by his cousins from Iowa. I remember when they were down 16-0 I turned to Dad and said “We came 2000 miles for this.” Then the bliss. I also remember how gracious the ND fans were after that game. Holtz, not so much. And the train back to Chicago. Just remember the delirium. I think most of were blitzed by the time the train rolled in.

Perfect weekend. Friday at Wrigley. And gorgeous weather to boot.

I got the opportunity to thank Lynch. My dad had passed by then. Told Lynch an abbreviated version and how much it meant to Dad and me. Lynch was with his young son at the time. It was nice to be able to do that.

Thing is, today Lynch would have been pulled for a concussion. As it is, that game kind of put him on the map. He should be in the HOF. I’m still hoping.

Two other brilliant defensive performances- Skov in the Orange Bowl. Randy Poltl in the ‘72 Rose Bowl.

You beat me to it. Lynch's hit on Bettis, best hit I've ever seen.

Best non-hit...Elway to Margerum over Lott, 1980. Stanford at USC 46, Elway throws it 61 yards in the air, past the disbelieving Ronnie Lott for Stanford's only TD. USC had won 27 straight, had a football graduation rate of 51% and was ineligible for the Rose Bowl (natch).

It's sobering to hear that was 30 years ago.

My freshman year, and only trek to Cal for Big Game. There's no topping that one. Wish I could find the picture of me on the field after the game.
