WBB: Stanford 68 ASU 60 - 81alum - 01-02-2021

Preview:

For years ASU has been a thorn in our side--posing problems with its perennial close defense and pinning us with defeats since long before Oregon became a dominant conference rival.  No matter what players she has, CTT always seems to know how to disrupt our offense and make us look ugly.  ASU is 7-2 this year, having narrowly lost to UCLA and having been blown out by Arizona.  There are a lot of new faces on their team, but the philosophy is always the same:  hockey-line changes maximizing endurance for an aggressive defense--even if that means sacrificing some talent or consistency on offense.  10 players average 15 minutes or more a game.

On offense, ASU is led in minutes and in points by Canadian junior guard Taya Hanson.  Hanson scores 13 ppg and hits treys at 30%.  Their second leader in points and minutes, and leader in assists, is freshman guard Jaddan Simmons, who seems to be ASU's rising star.  She is scoring 10 ppg but is not much of a three point shooter yet.  5'11" sophomore forward Eboni Walker is third in scoring and the leader in rebounds.  6'3" freshman forward Katelyn Levings has started all nine games.

ASU is quite young as a team and the key offensive players are not that tall.  I am not sure how well CTT's aggressive defense will disrupt our offense--it might.  But I am fairly confident that our defense will pose nightmares for their offense.  At worst, this could become one of those low scoring defensive slugfests.  At best....I won't tempt the woofing gods.

Hanson made 7 threes against cal in their one point win yesterday. ASU played only 9 against cal and only 9 suited up.

If Stanford plays the same kind of brutal defense it did in the first half against Arizona, I don't see ASU hanging close to the Cardinal.   But you never know until the game is played.

Regardless of the score, there is always room for improvement and that is what I hope to see.

OK ASU started with 14. One transferring, one hurt first game out for the year. Three didn't suit up vs cal two both averging 4 points and Walker averaging 10 points.

ASU being thin is a recipe for disaster for them.  So much depends on keeping their defenders fresh.

The postgame interview with Adia Barnes was interesting.  She said that Stanford has a terrific 7 person rotation--8 and 9 not so much.  She is giving Brink and Lacie credit, I guess.

Hopefully Prechtel has something to say about that.

Right before our game Oregon takes on UCLA on Pac 12 (Oregon v UCLA 1pm Pac 12 networks.  Stanford v ASU 3pm Pac 12 networks.)  Should be a very interesting matchup and one I will watch with interest.  Oregon beat Oregon State handily earlier this year, but barely got by WSU.  Since they have not played UCLA or Arizona yet, it is hard to gauge how good they are.

At this point I still view them as a dangerous threat to us, but will be interested to see how they do against a common (and quality) opponent in UCLA.

UCLA leads OR at the half 38-34.

UCLA is coug'n it.  Unbelievable. But they hold on to win by 1. DUCKS GO DOWN AT HOME!

Is Brink dressed out?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. ASU 3pm Sunday - martyup - 01-03-2021

11-0 start to the game.  Nicely done.

Looks like she's not.

Announcers say Brink is not available and it's not due to COVID, hopefully she'll be back for Oregon on Friday as we will need her then.

A 19-4 first quarter lead slightly marred by 4 turmovers to end the quarter; a little sloppy and unwarranted.

Commentators for game say that Brink is "not available," and emphasized that it's not Covid related

Brink is sitting in a chair just across from the baseline corner.  She is walking stiffly when she gets up to fist bump teammates.  Damn I hope she is not hurt bad.

I wonder if Coach Tara even realizes she singles out Prechtel for punitive PT decisions.

Seriously, the end of Q1 was a joke (and not a funny one).  The team just commits 4 turnovers (none by Prechtel); and then on ASU's last possession, Kiana makes a foolish reach in foul with a few seconds left.  All of those transgressions have no repercussions.  It's only when Prechtel is called for a foul - which was a very dubious call - with .4 seconds left that Tara feels compelled to go to the bench and sub in Belibi for Prechtel's mistake (which, btw, was not a foul).

But even if it were, c'mon . . .

For some reason, Prechtel is in Tara's 'house.

P.S. Belibi looks great out there.

I didn't realize Haley already has 3 fouls; we are being called for many more fouls 8-3 so far.
