WTENNIS: STAN 7 COLO 0 - ColoradoTree - 03-04-2021

Stanford plays its first road matches of the year this weekend. They play at Utah (6-2) on Friday at 12:30pm and at Colorado (6-2) on Sunday at 9:00am. Neither team has an impressive win so far, and neither team has a ranked singles player or doubles team. That said, both teams have eight matches under their belts compared to our two, and the talent level is certainly above what we saw from Santa Clara and UC Davis, so don't be surprised if some of these matches are closer than they ought to be. In terms of ranked opponents, Utah lost 7-0 to #22 Texas A&M (though Utah at least pushed it to a third set at #1 singles) and 0-4 to #46 Denver (though the remaining 3 matches were close). For their part, the Buffs lost 6-1 to #41 Iowa State (winning a third-set supertiebreak at #2 singles) and 3-4 to #46 Denver (winning 4, 5, and 6 singles). 

Stanford so far this season:

2-0, with a pair of 7-0 wins against overmatched in-state opponents, Santa Clara and UC Davis. That's enough to get us back into the rankings at #28, basically a "ok, we'll start thinking about you again, but let us know when you play someone good" ranking. Not a lot to glean from those matches in terms of how the rest of the season will go, but here's a summary of what we (think we might maybe) know after those two matches:

* Gordon is cruising as our unquestioned #1. Lost just one game in two matches and worked quickly.
* Geller has leapfrogged some more experienced players. She played #3 in both matches, and appears to be ahead of not just her very highly touted fellow freshman, India Houghton, but a 5th year player (Higuchi), a senior (Shin), both juniors (Choy and Madurawe), and a sophomore (Mossmer). We don't yet know where she ranks vis-a-vis sophomore Angelica Blake, as Blake hasn't played yet, but Geller looks to be no worse than our #4 singles player--pretty impressive for a Stanford freshman. And she was the first off court in both matches to boot. A quick worker.
* Some rust, but that's to be expected after such a lengthy layoff. Arbuthnott won her first set against UC Davis easily but then couldn't finish and had to win a supertiebreak to take the match. Similar for Choy against Santa Clara. Madurawe won her first set 6-0 against Davis and was cruising in the second before she dropped a few in a row, but at least she fought back to win that set and the match. 
* Choy seems to have jumped ahead of Shin, which is a positive development after Shin's struggles last year. 
* Emma Higuchi has given this team nothing but steady play and quick wins on Court 6 the past four seasons, but her time in the lineup may have come to an end. Just too much firepower ahead of her in the lineup. 
* We have a clear #1 in Gordon, then Arbuthnott/Blake in some order, then Geller and Choy, and then likely Shin at 6. But our depth is such that we have a number of players with a decent claim to the #6 spot--Shin, Higuchi, Houghton, and Madurawe. All four should really see some time this season so we can have a little more flexibility going into the postseason. 
* In doubles, it looks like Gordon/Madurawe and Choy/Shin are relatively set pairs, with the other one TBD (if Blake is healthy, you'd expect Arbuthnott/Blake to be that team, given their success last season).

What to expect:

Barring calamity, Stanford will win these matches. The suspense is in the margin and what the individual performances mean going forward. As is often the case, Gordon will have the toughest test, but Stanford is strongly favored in each spot in the lineup. If this were midseason, I'd be disappointed with anything other than 7-0 in each match, but with so little match play to date, we need to make room for some inconsistency. But I'll still predict 7-0 in each one, assuming they play them out.

Doubles matchups are on the Utah live-scoring app as the match is about to get started:

1. Gordon/Madurawe v. M. Lamoreaux/Dush
2. Arbuthnott/Geller v. Hung/Goncharova
3. Choy/Shin vs. A. Lamoreaux/Rich

So, this suggests Blake is not in the lineup again. We'll see!

FWIW, the Utah pairs in terms of singles position are:

1. #1 with #4
2. #2 with #3
3. #5 with #6
Live streaming isn't working (at least not for me), so they must've moved this match indoors. 

1. Gordon/Madurawe lead 3-2
2. Arbuthnott/Geller won 6-1
3. Choy/Shin tied 2-2

Arbuthnott is usually one of our slowest players, grinding her opponents down. Geller might be rubbing off on her!

1. Gordon/Madurawe trail 4-5, Utah to try and serve this one out
2. Arbuthnott/Geller won 6-1
3. Choy/Shin trail 3-5

Losing the doubles point here would be embarrassing. No sugarcoating that. Not so big as what we saw in the first couple matches, but this is still a very big talent differential.

And that's the doubles point! Nice work from Gordon/Madurawe to turn on the jets there at the end. They appear to be playing out the #3 doubles match, with Utah serving for it.

And Choy/Shin take it in a tiebreaker! Nice to get the win there, I suppose, but my eyebrows are raised at how close we came to losing this doubles point. Anyway, onto singles with a 1-0 lead.

Hi, Emma! After one match off, she rejoins the lineup in her traditional spot, which seems questionable from a strict ITA rule-compliance perspective, but hey, we'll see if anyone cares. 

But otherwise, this seems to be our preferred Blake-free lineup, but prudently rotating at #6. Utah's lineup is different than usual, swapping Hung and Lamoreaux at 1 and 2 and switching Dush and Goncharova at 3 and 4 (whereas for all but one match, it's been Lamoreaux-Hung-Goncharova-Dush). Also, the usual #6, Jasmine Rich, is out, putting Mikkelson at 6 for just the first time this year (she didn't complete her match against Denver).

The joys of following an Olympic sport where there are no press conferences and no local press coverage--no idea! We know only what Stanford puts out in the match press releases, and they haven't said boo about it.

Thanks for clarifying the feeds.  I just realized I can see the scoreboards in the background for each match.  Looks like Choy is up 2-0 and Gordon (or whoever is next to Choy) is up 3-0 in the second set?

The camera angle of the Gordon match leaves something to be desired.  For the most part you can't see the player on the far side of the court.

Yeah, it's not great. This is a pretty bad live-streaming setup. Better than nothing, of course, but we don't have well-positioned cameras, we don't have point by point scoring on the screen, we don't even have the names of the players on each court. Sigh....

Arbuthnott first off court! That's a really nice sign, given that she's not usually the quickest at finishing matches. And Choy follows a couple minutes later. Geller struggling a bit now; I'm curious to see how she responds.

And Gordon clinches the match with a 6-1, 6-1 win! Higuchi follows with a 6-1, 6-1 win of her own a few moments later, but it's Gordon with the clinch.

In the Geller match, the opponent just double faulted a bunch of times on the near court.  Based on the shadows, is the sun causing havoc for that side?

Maybe only for Dush.  That was a fast service game for Geller

And Geller breaks for 2-3 down before the quick hold for 3-3! Come on, Ana!
Another break for 4-3 up! Momentum in college tennis, folks--it's a real, real thing. Does Geller win her match before Shin (up 6-2, 4-2) does?
Geller takes the second set 6-4! Meanwhile, Shin is now up just 5-3 after struggling to put her opponent away, but she has a couple of match points here.
Stanford 6, Utah 0 as Shin takes her match 6-2, 6-3!

A 10-point supertiebreak at Court 3 will decide the final score....
Geller was up a minibreak, 7-5, in the supertiebreak, but gave it back. Now 8-7 Geller.
Up 9-8 with a match point on her serve....
And Geller completes the sweep! A 7-0 win at Utah to start conference play!
