Good for Wayne Tinkle -

Beat Colorado by 2 for the tournament championship. As others have pointed out, this may mean Haase gets his NIT invite.

What it means is Stanford blew it by not hiring Wayne when they could have

Tinkle is 52-76 in conference play since he has been at Oregon State. Because his team had a hot week against mediocre competition we have now decided he is a great coach?
Just asking.

When was that "could have"? Tinkle was hired by OSU after the 2013-14 season when Dawkins had just made the Sweet Sixteen
Maybe after the 2012-2013 season which would have sent a bold message that making the NIT - even winning it - isn't good enough. But as we now know, Muir didn't have the guts to do that.

Wayne Tinkle is a fine man and a gentleman in every way. I got to know him when his daughter played basketball for Stanford, when he still coached for Montana. He was very approachable, sincere, and an enthusiastic supporter of Stanford basketball. When he went to Oregon State, he rallied his team to play beyond their talent.
I celebrate his victory, I celebrate the man. He would have been a fine basketball coach for Stanford.

Buddy Teevens was a fine man and a gentleman too. So was Paul Wiggin. Unfortunately that alone does not make a great coach.
If he "rallied his team to play beyond their talent" he must have not had much talent (which of course he is responsible for recruiting and developing also).

Give the guy a break. He just beat a 4 seed, a 1 seed, and a 3 seed to win the PAC-12 Tournament. He deserves the credit!

I certainly give him credit for a fine perfomance over the past week. However, I would like to see a few more fine perfomances like that before I start thinking he should be the next Stanford basketball coach.

Look at his Montana record.

Well, Haase (at least IMO) has got at least one more year. We'll see how Tinkle does in the Big Dance this year and next year overall.

It was right for Bernard to pass on Tinkle. There's never been a successful basketball coach come out of Montana, certainly not one who started as an assistant at Montana then became the head coach at Montana. And certainly not one who then went to Stanford.
Well...
maybe just one.

FWIW -- Comparison of W/L records:
....................................Overall...............Conf.
Johnny Dawkins.....156–115 (.576).....66–78 (.458)
Jerod Haase.............82–73 (.529)......44–48 (.478)
Wayne Tinkle........110–108 (.505)......52–76 (.406)
These are Dawkins' and Haase's Stanford records and Tinkle's OSU record.

Wayne won 64% at Montana.

Haase won 60% at UAB. The problem with Terry's comparison is that expectations at Stanford should be different than expectations at OSU, just as the threshold for success at UCLA and Arizona are probably higher than at Stanford.

To clarify, what I take away from the comparison is this -- I don't see good evidence in the W/L record that Tinkle is better than Dawkins or Hasse.

Yeah, I get that he is a sentimental favorite because his daughter played at Stanford and they are members of the Stanford family.
I also get that (like Montgomery) he had a good record at Montana.
However, given his record at OSU I have a hard time believing he would do any better at Stanford than Dawkins and Haase have done.
