Geno tests positive for COVID -
BostonCard - 03-15-2021
Just flashed on my screen. He will apparently miss at least the first game (which shouldn't impact UConn's chances). Obviously, if more players are impacted, it could impact UConn's chances.

Could you imagine a tournament without the University of Connecticut? Hopefully Geno recovers quickly, and the Huskies don’t have any other issues that prevent them from playing.

He just got the second shot on Wed so chances are his symptoms should be mild at worst.

He'll still great credit for those wins, won't he?
Pretty sure my cat could coach UConn to a win in their first game (and my cat has been dead for over a decade).

When they do contact tracing, what is or is not a "close contact"? When watching WBB games, you see coaches (including Tara in Stanford's case) give a player a pat on the back or brief hug. Is that a "close contact" that would affect a player's availability if the coach then tests positive?

Close contact is usually closer than 6 feet for more than 15 minutes in a 24 hour period... they wear monitors that track that kind of stuff.. Stanford has been super careful and cautious.. hope they continue for 6 more wins!

MARTY! Covid alert!!!

Does anyone know if the NCAA is doing multiple tests to confirm positives? Just one dose of the moderna and phizer vaccines still has some protective effect, and the pcr tests have maybe a 0.5% false positive rate. Combine those facts, and there's a decent chance this is a false positive.
Given that there are around 2,000 total athletes in the men's and women's Tourneys, there will probably be a few false positives. That plus contact tracing could really sink some unlucky teams' chances.

From the
NCAA protocols: "A same-day protocol will be in place for potential false positive tests.". I suspect it was not announced until a 2nd test confirmed the test results.
The two mRNA vaccines "only" protect with 95% effectiveness (amazingly well) against getting laboratory-confirmed COVID. (As I understand it, the clinical trials did not test at the frequency of NCAA testing. I expect a number of asymptomatic cases were not detected, and that the true effectiveness against even asymptomatic COVID was less than 95%.)
The CDC indicates 147 cases/100K in CT in the past week. At that rate, there would be about 7 cases/100K of those with two shots of mRNA. (Probably closer to 10 since a fair number of the overall population has some level of protection from the vaccine.)
The CDC indicates 3K - 5K PCR tests per 100K in CT in the past week. 0.5% false positive rate suggests about 15-25 false positives per 100K population.
(For Moderna, vaccine effectiveness against getting COVID was
roughly 95% beginning at 2 weeks after 1st dose)
Even if "fully vaccinated" (2 weeks past 2nd shot), Geno would be still required to be tested. (Those that had COVID after Dec. 9 are not required to be tested.)
I hope & expect that Geno has an asymptomatic case, and I wish him well. I hope that UConn players have not been infected. I expect that teams are limiting close exposure time between any two individuals to less than the 15-minutes and 6-foot commandment that is engraved on the stone tablets by the CDC.
I hope their players & staff are wise enough to stay even further apart and have less interaction to avoid any further spread than may have already happened.
Perhaps the specter that UConn might have COVID problems will reinforce teams' commitments to wear masks effectively when not on the court and avoid unnecessary contact (high fives, pats on the back). I see more and more laxity in hygiene against COVID on the court, even for Stanford (which is one of the least lax, but there are some).

I hope UConn can play. While I admit I don't remember who won the 1998 NCAA WBB tourney, I am hoping I will be able to remember who Stanford beats in the finals in 2021. I don't want anyone putting an asterisk on our championship, if we are fortunate and good enough.

What 1998 NCAA WBB tourney?

1998 clearly doesn’t exist. There was no tournament that year.
For those who don’t get it: The infamous Harvard game. Tennessee finished a perfect season, beating Louisiana Tech in the title game.

Since nobody else has asked: how is it possible that none of the UConn players or coaches have to quarantine due to contact tracing protocols?
If this were Stanford, I'm sure the entire team would be in quarantine.

Phogge, I guess you don't agree with the other thread "WBB: DISRESPECT = MOTIVATION"
