WBB: NCAA TOURNEY (AZ vs UCONN) - TheFarm07 - 03-15-2021

WSU is seeded #9 and plays #8 South Florida in NC State's region

In the same region, Arizona is seeded #3 and faces #14 Stony Brook and could play #2 Texas A&M in the Sweet 16

Oregon State is seeded #8 against #9 Florida State, in South Carolina's region.

#3 UCLA against #14 Wyoming in the same region

We are playing #16 Utah Valley in the first round!

#8 Oklahoma State/#9 Wake Forest in the second round, giant-killer #4 Arkansas in the Sweet 16 (wins over UConn and Baylor)

Louisville is the #2 seed in our region

Oregon is seeded #6 and also in our region

Our game against Utah Valley is this Sunday, March 21st at 7pm PST.

ugh, I am NOT a fan of having Arkansas in our region! as a potential S16 matchup!

Maybe Oregon will take them out and then we can take out the Ducks.

I am sorry if that was confusing, Oregon is in our region, but on the other half, so they would have to get #3 Georgia and #2 Louisville.

We would need either #13 Wright State or #5 Missouri State (presuming they beat #12 UC-Davis first) to beat Arkansas if we don't want to face them.

Arkansas is a lot like Maryland, they are a high octane offense (4 of their starters shooting at least 36% from 3-point range) and they shoot a lot of 3's (averaging 25 3-point attempts a game). We will need our perimeter defense to be on par if we face them.

However, their defense is subpar, giving up 74 points a game and 44% from the field.

First off, with all due respect to Utah Valley and I am sure we will do our due diligence against them, I am sure Tara is already watching videos of Natasha Mack. She's 6'4" and their leading scorer, so Brink will have an early test on defending without fouling.

Hopefully UCLA will take out Maryland and Oregon State can take out South Carolina. Interesting that there are no Pac-12 teams in UCONN's region, but 2 in every other region. You would think that they would have spread them out more evenly.

It's also curious that Stanford plays at 9 pm local time on Sunday while the 8/9 game will be played at 12 pm on a different court. The winner of the 8/9 game gets an extra 9 hours of rest before the round of 32. That seems unfair. None of the other 1 seeds has that situation.

Also I noted the number of west coast teams scheduled to play the last game of the day in their opener:
Stanford - 9 pm local time Sunday
Oregon - 9 pm Monday
UCLA - 9 pm Monday
Washington St - 8:30 pm Sunday

Scheduled I suppose for prime time on the west coast.

81alum, I am looking forward to hopefully 6 game previews from you over the next few weeks.

A quick look at Utah Valley, Cal Baptist won their conference tournament, but the school is still transitioning to D1 and not eligible yet for postseason play, so the conference decided beforehand to award the conference bid to the 2nd place team which was Utah Valley.

A quick run through their stats shows opportunities we can exploit: they turn the ball over 16 times a game and has a negative turnover margin and they only average 63 ppg.

They look evenly balanced scoring wise with 4 players averaging at least 9 ppg. Their leading scorer Josie Williams is their center at 6'5", so it will be good practice for Brink to guard her inside and work on effectively defending a scoring post without fouling.

They have a couple of players shooting nearly 40% from long range, but the two players who have attempted the most 3 pointers on their team are landing them at a less threatening 30% and 22% clip.

I am expecting no issues with them; as this should be our only straightforward game probably. Even our potential Round of 32 opponent, Oklahoma State will pose issues, with Natasha Mack, who was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

That was Jenna Brown with the brace. Watch the segment again if you can. Jenna is in the foreground on the right edge of the screen, and her number 54 is visible on her uniform. She is out this season after knee surgery, so the brace is to be expected. I believe I spotted Haley way in the back in the middle.

It is weird, but weirder for me is that all the 1-16 matchups are on Sunday, while all the 2-15 matchups are on Monday. In the past I thought they usually distributed each seed's matchups across both days of games. They obviously scheduled to avoid having the 1-seeds play at the same time; they could have avoided having their top overall seed play at 9pm local if they had scheduled one or two of the 1-seeds for Monday instead.

I don't know if she's full go, but you can see from this video that she traveled with the team to San Antonio. She's shown riding a stationary bike with only a sleeve on her knee, not a brace. So obviously her rehab is coming along.

In the championship game, with less than 30 seconds to go, Stanford leading Yukon by 17 points, I'd be ok with Tara subbing in Jenna just to stand on the court while we play the rest of the game 4 on 5.

Preview:
Should we win tonight, we will play Oklahoma State, which defeated Wake Forest 84-61 today.

Oklahoma State is led by 6'4" Natasha Mack, reportedly a top 5 WNBA pick this year. She has a very long reach beyond her height--reminds me of Brink in build, or perhaps a taller Mya Hollingshed. She gets the ball down low and has spin moves and accuracy once she does. She also has a decent mid range jumper and used the glass well, even from outside layup range. Wake Forest had no one who could stop her--on some possessions Wake Forest shut her down by doubling her and having both doubles fronting her so she could not get the ball. They pushed her 8 or even 10 feet out and still she would hit jumpers or bank them in. At first they had some success offensively against Mack, but Mack improved as the game went along and in fact has an excellent reputation for defense. Her national leading blocks must have something to do with it. One possible weakness--I noticed by the 3rd quarter that Mack was not really running the floor. Not sure if she was tiring or if the OSU strategy is to keep her back until later in the shot clock.

Mack averages 19 points and 12 rebound per game, and is the national leader with 107 blocks on the year.

Oklahoma State also has Ja'Mee Asberry, a 5'5" redshirt junior who is hitting 42% of her threes, so OSU has some balance. Today they got prolific three point shooting from freshman Lexi Keyes too. OSU likes the inside/out game, so keeping Asberry and Keys covered on the perimeter (Anna Wilson on Asberry sounds perfect) while doubling up Mack sounds like the formula for defensive success. On the other hand, I worry about foul trouble by Brink trying to cover Mack. OSU will be studying our Colorado loss, I am sure, for pointers on how to Mack to have a came like Hollingshed's.

OSU, all in all, seems to me like a very good offensive team, but they do not have 5 players who are all threats, so Tara may be able to devise something interesting to take something away from them. They had 21 assists to propel their 35 baskets, they made 8 of 21 treys. On the other hand, they did not out rebound a shorter and less athletic Wake Forest team, so perhaps there is an opportunity there. Their defense did not seem particularly outstanding but was competent and wore Wake Forest down.

We may need Brink or Belibi to have an outstanding defensive game, and we won't be able to go cold from three point range. In short, Oklahoma State seems to me to be more of a sweet 16 or even elite 8 team than they do a 2nd round team, and we will have our hands full if we get past tonight's matchup.

The Wake Forest/Oklahoma game ended the first half 42-29 Oklahoma.
