WBB: Stanford 87 Utah Valley 44 Rd. 1 -

Preview:
Utah Valley is headed to the NCAA's for the first time in its history and gets us in the first round. Utah Valley University is a state university located in Orem Utah with about 40k students.
They got to the NCAAs by finishing second place in the WAC to Cal Baptist which is not eligible since it has recently transitioned to Div 1. We should all remember Cal Baptist. They gave us a close call at the invitational in Victoria Canada last year where we edged them by an uncomfortable 5 points. It was one of Nadia Fingall's best games or we would have lost. Cal Baptist was 14-0 and Utah Valley 10-4 in league, 13-6 overall. Utah Valley fell to Grand Canyon in their tournament finals, and has not played any major team this year. Their game against Utah was cancelled or else we would have had a common opponent.
It is a daunting task for them, and what can their coach say? "Obviously Stanford is a great team. Coach Tara VanDerveer is a Hall-of-Fame coach and a legend, but we're excited to go compete against them and give them everything we've got."
The Utah Valley team has a 6'5" center and a 6'2" forward, but otherwise has no one over 6'. They have fairly balanced scoring between four players, ranging from 9 up to 14 ppg. The leading scorer is the 6'5" center Josie Williams, a junior making 53% of her shots and even the occasional three--and she has 37 blocks on the season. Most of their players will take three point shots, some prolifically so, and their percentages vary from 30-38%, so perimeter defense will be important.

Thanks for the review -- good to have this perspective. I just hope everyone can stay healthy, in all ways. This should be a game in which everyone can get a chance for minutes, which would be great.

"The Cardinal are 25-2 overall this season and stormed through the Pac 12 Tournament with three wins by an average of 31.0 points per game. The first-round game is the first meeting between the programs in women's basketball."
"Coach Tara VanDerveer is a Hall-of-Fame coach and a legend, but we're excited to go compete against them and give them everything we've got."
Not exactly a vote of confidence in his team's chances of winning.

The article compares the free weight facilities for the men's bubble vs. the women's bubble. Men have excellent facilities. Women have a yoga mat and some weights, none bigger than 30 pounds.

Can't do that per the mods. At the Men's NCAA lots of S&C equipment, At the Women's almost nothing at all. NCAA says oh not enough room for the Women's hotel. Story broken by the Stanford WBB S&C Coach

Ok. I was able to see the photo and read between the lines on Anne Kilion's twitter page. And yes, disgraceful.

Totally appalling and unacceptable. And the fact that this disparity had to be pointed out to the NCAA -- that it wasn't obvious and allowed to happen in the first place -- says a great deal.

Someone help me identify this food. Chicken fried spam?
These comparative photos have to be just killing the NCAA. This is self inflicted. They need to hire some competent people.
You can't tell me that they couldn't get a gym chain like Gold's or Planet Fitness to provide gym equipment free of charge. And, you can't tell me that they couldn't get a big restaurant chain to sponsor the training table at a discounted rate equal or less than the NCAA is paying for this pig slop. Companies line up for this kind of promotion and exposure.

Hey, it's
Women's History Month, so shouldn't the women get treated more specially than the men?

OK, maybe I can't tell you that, but even if it is true they would have to pay big bucks to make a decent exercise room or to have good, varied food choices, they could and must spend what it takes to do so. This is the NCAA championship. It should be of the highest quality in all respects, no matter what it takes. If the NCAA can't manage that, then they aren't qualified to hold the tournament.

Am I the last person to know that the men's teams get paid for winning?

In the Pac-12, and I would guess other conferences, the teams don't get paid directly; the conference divvies up the winnings equally among all conference teams (and presumably taking its own cut along the way?).

Hmm...so if you're an AD, or a conference exec, and you have to make a decision as to resources, it would make more financial sense to tilt your resources in favor of the men's game (and within the conference, towards your strong teams), eh?
