WBB: Stanford 73 Oklahoma State 62 Rd. 2 - 81alum - 03-21-2021

Preview:

Oklahoma State defeated Wake Forest 84-61 today to earn the right to take us on.

Oklahoma State is led by 6'4" Natasha Mack, reportedly a top 5 WNBA pick this year.  She has a very long reach beyond her height--reminds me of Brink in build, or perhaps a taller Mya Hollingshed.  She gets the ball down low and has spin moves and accuracy once she does.  She also has a decent mid range jumper and uses the glass well, even from outside layup range.  Wake Forest had no one who could stop her--on some possessions Wake Forest shut her down by doubling her and having both doubles fronting her so she could not get the ball--but later she received lobs and put them in.  WF pushed her 8 or even 10 feet out and still she would hit jumpers or bank them in.  At first they had some success offensively against Mack, but Mack improved defensively as the game went along and in fact has an excellent reputation for defense--she leads the nation in blocks. Mack averages 19 points and 12 rebounds per game, and is the national leader with 107 blocks on the year.

One possible weakness--I noticed by the 3rd quarter that Mack was not really running the floor.  Not sure if she was tiring or if the OSU strategy is to keep her back until later in the shot clock.  Perhaps we can wear her down by rotating multiple bigs against her and all running the floor.

Oklahoma State also has Ja'Mee Asberry, a 5'5" redshirt junior who is hitting 42% of her threes, and freshman guard Lexi Keyes got hot from three point range today too.  This gives Oklahoma State the inside/outside game that makes them tough to defend.  If Anna Wilson can go, I think she would probably be assigned to Asberry, and we will need to double Mack.  I worry about foul trouble by Brink trying to cover Mack.  OSU will be studying our Colorado loss, I am sure, for pointers on how to get Mack to have a game like Hollingshed's.

Only Mack and Asberry average in double figures.  Other players can score, but only those two are apt to "go off" and so I have some confidence that Tara's defensive scheme will come up with something.  OSU does not appear to have 5 players who are all threats, so Tara may be able to devise something interesting to take something away from them.  On the other hand, in today's game they had 21 assists to propel their 35 baskets, they made 8 of 21 treys--and that is  tough to defend.

OSU did not significantly out rebound a shorter and less athletic Wake Forest team, so perhaps there is an opportunity to beat them on the glass.

We may need Brink or Belibi to have an outstanding defensive game, and it sure would help to be just as hot shooting from three point range as we were tonight.  But Oklahoma State seems to me to be more of a sweet 16 team than they do a 2nd round team--they certainly are better than Colorado, so we will have our hands full.  Can we beat them if we play less than our best?  Probably.  Can we beat them if have a bad shooting night as we did for our two losses?  Probably not.  But fortunately we have been shooting well of late.

Thanks 81.  Stand 'em up and knock 'em down.  Win or go home. Nothing is easy from now on.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State Rd. 2 - Hulk01 - 03-22-2021

The Cowboys are a two-woman band; Mack and Ashbey account for over half of their points per game.  (Stanford's top two scorers, Williams and Jones, account for only 35% of Stanford's points per game.)  Ashbey has been cold for the last two weeks--25-81 overall, 14-44 from three.  It's hard to imagine her coming up with her average 17 points per game against Wilson, and Lacie can work her, too, with an 8" height/length advantage.

The Cowboys are 3-6 versus top 30 teams, with their best win over #24 West Virginia, who beat them in their two other contests.  The only top 20 team OSU has faced is Baylor, who beat them 70-51 and 77-58.

Ashbey vs. Wilson and Hull, Mack vs. Brink, Belibi and Prechtel, and Jones vs. a mismatch.  Love our chances.

Looks like Bob is talking about Kassidy De Lapp, #1 on the OkSt roster.

Really annoyed to see our game is NOT at the Alamodome today, but rather at the Convocation Center. South Carolina and U-Conn. both get to play in the Alamodome again. Seems it would be to a shooter's advantage to play in the same place.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State Rd. 2 6pm Tuesday - CompSci87 - 03-23-2021

Also, UConn plays at the same time on ESPN as Stanford is on ESPN2. Of course they have more fans, but remind me, who's the #1 overall seed?

For being for the overall number 1 seed they are sure getting the disadvantages number one seeds usually get.. for example the change in court as you mentioned and also playing the later games. At this point OK St has had more rest.. but resilience is a strong suite of this Stanford team!

And there in a nutshell is ESPN’s East Coast Bias. UConn is the ‘Bama of WBB and we would have to beat them 5 years in a row to make a dent in that.

Might as well start now!!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State Rd. 2 6pm Tuesday - M T - 03-23-2021

In the UCLA game yesterday, I noticed the ESPN crew talking about UCLA being "as advertised."

Do you think they'd talk about UConn at this time of season as being "as advertised"?  No, they'll talk about them as if they'd seen them before.

You don't think, do you?  With only 2 games left today, I don't see that Missy has officiated a game yet.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State Rd. 2 6pm Tuesday - BobK - 03-23-2021

Missy has done two games this far :). None today I’m pretty sure

Not bad for Ana Wilson... 8 points in the first 5 min.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Oklahoma State Rd. 2 6pm Tuesday - 81alum - 03-23-2021

Not only did Wilson start, she is hot and scored 8 of our first 10 points.  It does seem as if we can control Mack so far.  But a couple of turnovers have helped OSU get their 5 points.  10-5 at the first ad break.

If we can take care of the ball, we should take these gals.
