Thanks for posting. Terrific article. It's great to see Anna get this attention, so  richly deserved.

Anna is shooting 85% (11-13) in the NCAA tourney, including going 6-6 from beyond the arc.  Wow!

It sounds like Tara is still hoping to persuade Anna to come back next year. It would be fantastic to have her back. The backcourt is the one area that worries me for next year's team.

Agreed; if both Kiana and Anna leave, then Jana and Jenna are in line to take over the 1 and 2 spots, so that will be a lot of pressure for a sophomore without too much experience and a player returning from injury to direct the offense

I'm concerned about the point guard position if neither Anna nor Kiana returns. If Jana were closer to ready, I think she would already be having a bigger role this year. Instead, she's relegated to mop-up duty. Brown is a question mark after missing a whole year and not showing to be ready for prime time so far.

Could we see Haley at point guard out of necessity next year?

Jana has played in the first half but I think she will be very good. Plus Lacie on the point if needed. But I’m a Jana fan

Are there enough scholarships for Wilson to return?

RE: WBB: Great article on Anna in USA Today - PVTree - 03-29-2021

I think about how much Jana has played her freshman year in comparison to other recent PGs such as Kiana, Lili, and Amber. Don't have stats in front of me, but I think each of them had more prominent roles in their first years. Of course, this team may be more loaded than theirs.

Defense wins championships. Just sayin :)

I don't think Wilson would count towards the scholarship limit in 2022 because of the COVID-19 exception.

Quote:For D1 fall sports, seniors who have scholarships and who will be using the extra year of eligibility will not count against the team’s scholarship limit for the 2021-22 season.

Not sure Jana will be ready to start at PG. Might need another year as backup so she can get some more minutes under her belt. I think Haley is way more effective starting off the ball and being able to play some on the block, but with the freedom to take it in the open court if she has the opportunity. I'd lean toward Lacie at point and Hannah at the 2. If Anna comes back, then she would start at the 2 just like this year.

We have 12 we gain 5 with Brown and lose 3 that’s 14 But of course no limit next season for basketball

Thanks, Bob!

Of course Stanford WBB has 15 scholarships endowed, while any additional would have to be funded somehow. So it's better not to have to go over 15.

Kiana article. Requires subscription.

Kiana has packed the arena with relatives using her teammates' unused tickets.

Good question.  Minutes each freshman year for some guards, not all point guards:
Amber Orrange 729
Lili Thompson 899
Marta Sniezek 656
Dijonai Carrington 274
Kiana Williams 899
Van Gytenbeek 234

Was Carrington injured freshman year, or just not ready for the rotation?

Van Gytenbeek looks to have a lot of potential but needs a lot of seasoning.  Brown has had moments but needs a much more consistent jump shot.

Janziya Harriel is coming in next year as a pointguard.  I know nothing about her  except she is rated ad the #14 point guard, well down the list.  Elena Bosgana from Greece is listed just as a guard.

Wilson could become the go-to point guard, I think, if she stayed.

RE: WBB: Great article on Anna in USA Today - BobK - 03-30-2021

Doubt Harriel plays point at Stanford. Would have at HS and didn’t when I saw her.
Carrington Missed most of her Sr HS season with an ACL

I love Jana. And love why she was recruited

Ditto on Jana, think she would do fine

RE: WBB: Great article on Anna in USA Today - 81alum - 03-30-2021

Well, Tara says that the transition from freshman to sophomore year is when you usually see the most improvement.  If Jana comes back with a greatly expanded role we will probably see a new player.  Her offense has looked good at times, and her defense has not been bad and no doubt will get better with experience.  Her ball handling is clearly not up to Kiana's level yet.  Her passing has looked good to me.  But this is a conversation for after the tournament!

RE: WBB: Great article on Anna in USA Today - bl82 - 03-30-2021

Jana passes like Sniezek and shoots like Hanna. She’s a good but not great ball handler. On defense, she often has trouble with screens and there are some general quickness issues, but LOTS to like here.
