Spring Game -

We got an announcement and invite to reserve seats today. From the looks of the invite, am I right to understand they are moving the game back to the football stadium -- where it always should have been :) I assume that's because 25% of the soccer field would mean they wouldn't have room for everyone who wanted to go? Or am I over-reading the announcement?

That is my understanding, as well.
I’m looking forward to it!
I assume they won’t run out, but Buck Cardinal Priority Seat members go, then STMs, then the general public.
I guess when you pick will also impact where you sit, but I am hoping I can get my STM seats, even if I can get “better”. I haven’t sat in my seats in a year and half.

I wonder if it is going to be an actual game or just a practice with a short scrimmage at the end.
I know last year people went expecting the former and were disappointed when they got the latter.
The notice seemed to indicate that it would be a game.

There were not enough healthy OL to play a "full" spring game in 2019 (last year's cancelled due to Covid). Thankfully, that is no longer the case as Carberry decided to actually recruit a bunch of OL.
Will be fun to see the game back in Stanford Stadium!

Seems like an effort by Bernie & Co. to goose attendance when the season begins. People will have to be more energetically encouraged, for sure. All things considered, Stanford Football 2021 feels like a buyer's market to a degree unknown to mankind.

Didn't the spring game used to be free. I wonder if they could fill the place if the WSU game was free.

If you had looked at the available season ticket seating charts, you would know this is factually and demonstrably false. It seems like a pretty solid year for season ticket sales.
A fair number of other STMs on this board have expressed a view similar to mine — I am looking forward to the start of the season and to being there in the stadium in-person more so than usual this year. It will be a special experience for me.

Not so fast, my friend. That chart reflects prior STMs, such as myself, who are PRESUMED to be renewing. Something that I, just one example, am not doing this season, after 48 years (1973). Bottom line, Stanford football tickets don't appear to be a hot item this year. For more reasons than one.

when (excluding visiting fans at a few games) was the last time Stanford Football was a "hot ticket"??? I don't really recall a time when it was, but I've only been a season ticket buyer since 1982....

I've been going since 1953, for a long time with comps, then working on films, then as a STH. Too many hurdles for a geezer now. Easier to watch on TV and nap.
Hope you all have a winning season.

For what it's worth, the highest average attendance at Stanford Stadium this millennium was in 2001 at 51,534. But that was only 60% capacity in the old stadium.
In 2013, Stanford averaged 50,743 per game, which is basically a sellout in the current stadium. Don't know if that qualifies as a hot ticket, though. Average attendance held above 40k per game from 2010 through 2017.
Average attendance plummeted from 47k in 2017 to 37-38k in 2018 and 2019. The recent attendance numbers have not been seen since the Buddy/Walt years and early Harbaugh.
Nota bene: my understanding is that these are tickets sold, not actual butts in seats. So if the attendance seems worse than the numbers reported above to folks who actually go to the games, that's because it is worse.

The last time? October 10, 1970. USC. SRO. Unbelievable, unforgettable. Indelible.

Indeed. And that was in the old stadium.

Unfortunately (IMO), Stanford football is not close to a hot ticket among Stanford students. This McCaffrey quote from The Athletic continues to haunt me:
Quote:I will never forget this. My sophomore year against UCLA, I had a heck of a game. I biked back to my dorm, I’m kind of on a high horse. I walk in, and six or seven people asked where I was! I think I had something like 243 yards rushing, four touchdowns. And they didn’t know where I was!

This just in, the majority of Stanford students are nerds who don't care about sports. One of the reasons I love being a pretty hardcore fan.
Although FWIW, I was a student at the time, attended that game, and the student section was PACKED. It was generally quite full throughout my time as an undergrad, at least when school was in session. Though very cool to secure front row seats at the 30 at the K State game because few students were there in early Sept. Less cool the next home game when a USC kid tried to fight me surrounded by other Stanford students.

Times have changed, SamuelMcF. Back in the early to mid '80s, lots of students attended games at Stanford Stadium, and we actually paid (but not much) for our student tickets despite the fact that the team--more often than not--lost. It didn't hurt that we were allowed to bring our own beer to the games. At least that's how I remember it.
I also have a vague memory of a spring game in the 1980s that featured the current-at-the-time team versus alumni.

“Plunkett Keeps His Promise”. Headline of the Chron /Examiner Sunday Sports page (they did a joint Sunday paper.)
That will always be my favorite Stanford game.

I remember frat houses marking entire rows with a keg on each end, guarded by pledges.
