NBC has very good coverage. Brooke Forde made the final of the 400 IM but failed to qualify.

I did not see Ella Eastin in the list of Stanford athletes swimming in the Trials, so I searched and was shocked to discover she officially retired from swimming last month because of a chronic neurological condition that has incapacitated her. One of my favorite Stanford athletes, I hope she recovers at least to the point where she can lead a fulfilling life. She was awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship and plans to become a nurse.

It is interesting that you chose not to quote that the neurological condition is
described as "possibly from long-haul COVID-19".
From her May 18 Instagram post[/:
Quote:Over the past year and a half, I have been battling a seemingly undiagnosable illness that incapacitated me. I lost my ability to manage daily activities and had to be taken care of by family and friends. I couldn’t live a normal life, much less one of a professional athlete.
The condition
reportedly "affects more than 70 million people" worldwide. It often appears secondary to a primary infection.
A medical paper on some patients with suspected
COVID-19 Dysautonomia. Detail of possible interest: "Notably, autonomic symptoms were present at COVID-19 onset in 5 of the 6 patients in this series, and none of the patients were hospitalized for these or other symptoms."
"In another large review of 841 hospitalized COVID-19 patients, dysautonomia was reported in 21 (2.5%) patients. Dysautonomia was considered mild in 15 of these patients,
"Though the scope of COVID-19 dysautonomia is at this point unknown, the implications and significance are enormous given the scale of the pandemic. It is at this point unclear whether dysautonomia is more prevalent in COVID-19 than other infections or whether there are any mechanisms that uniquely target vulnerable autonomic pathways"
(Although there is one subject of the study whose age matches Ella, I don't believe that subject's timeline matches Ella's.)
A "year and a half" before May 18 would suggest Ella had one of the earliest cases of COVID-19 in the US, if the belief that the condition followed or was concurrent with a COVID-19 infection, and her time line is anywhere close to accurate.
From
SwimSwam:
"Eastin has not raced in an official meet since December 2019, and left Stanford, where she was training as a post-grad, to return home to Southern California at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic."
She performed well enough in the Dec. 2019 US Open.
There is an April 23, 2020, 25-minute
video interview on SwimSwam. "Ella Eastin has been at home in Southern California and out of the water for over a month now. At first, like any other swimmer, this was very unsettling, especially given that in January-February she had already taken an extended period out of the water due to health reasons." In the interview, Ella mentions having a rough start of the year (2020) due to a "health issue". She is clearly considering that she would be swimming again when the pandemic subsided. At 9:00, she talks about being grateful that she is healthy. (Her dad may have had COVID in mid-March, but she hadn't seen him as of the interview.) Ella also indicates that she left for SoCal immediately upon the closing of practices, which I believe was the result of the March 16, 2020, shelter-in-place order in the county.
My take, given her "year and a half" is that the January-February health issue was the start of her health problems (at least in her mind) leading to her diagnosis of dysautonomia. I think that she did not think she had COVID prior to the date of the interview. She didn't indicate she had health problems at the time of the interview, and referred to herself as being healthy.
So, I'm less sure about her dysautonomia, if she first had symptoms in January 2020, as being COVID related. It seems highly unlikely to me that she had a very early COVID (though, she was in a county with early cases).

I did not do so simply because, based on what is reported in the one article I read and linked, it is total speculation and the timeline is inconsistent.

Huske lane 4. Another American record.
Also, Ledecky won the 400 free. 4:01. 4 or 5 seconds slower than the Australian Olympic trial winner.
And Regan Smith qualified first for the final in the 100 m backstroke.

Hope we have someone who can do breast stroke and freestyle, because not winning every medley relay with those two would be inexcusable.

Allie Raab (Jr) got a 10th in the 100 Breast (1:07.45, 0.4 behind 4th). (GoStanford said 9th, but results say 10th)
In the 200 Free, Brooke Forde (Sr) was 5th in the semifinals (finals pending). Morgan Tankersly(Jr) was 17th, but she's a distance swimmer.
Stanford has 8 entrants in the 100 Free at the trials but it hasn't been swum yet.
The Stanford roster includes Amalie Fackenthal with a lifetime best of just under 48.00 for 100y and 4 more ladies under 49.00.
Let's not forget Taylor Ruck who is a Canadian (so isn't swimming in the US trials).

We are usually well-stocked in freestyle, and I assume Olympian Taylor Ruck is returning--according to her bio, the 2nd fastest in the school record book in the 100 and 200 free, and fourth fastest in the 50. But breast stroke has been thin, we had two but I don't know if they're coming back or who we have coming in.

Virginia next year is going to be awfully tough to beat as well. Kate Douglass, Alex Walsh, Gretchen Walsh and a boatload of other talented swimmers. We'll counter with Smith, Huske, Nordmann sisters, Forde and Ruck (hopefully). And hopefully we'll be able to woo Curzan and Hook as well for the Class of 2022 for long-term health of the program.

When Forde was introduced last night the announcer said returning to Stanford for a 5th year
RE: Swimming and Diving Olympic Trials -
ColoradoTree - 06-17-2021
Forde's sixth-place finish in the 200 will very likely be enough to get her to Tokyo as part of the 4 x 200m relay team, too. We'll have to wait until the end of Trials to find out for sure, but sixth in the 100 or 200 has usually punched tickets in the past. The difference this year is the addition of the 1500m to the women's Olympic program, but without a corresponding increase in the total team max, so the 6th-placed 100/200 finishers are slightly less likely to make it this time around.
We lost that relay to the Australians at the 2019 Worlds, but won it at Worlds in '13, '15, and '17, and at the Olympics in 2012 and 2016. So, she has to be feeling pretty good about the chance of coming home with some hardware with a relay prelim swim. Based on 200 free times this year, the Australians have to be favored in that relay, but you never know.
For those of you who don't know, the Olympic swimming roster has a max of 26 men and 26 women. The winners in every event, plus the top 4 in 100/200 frees, make it automatically. If there's room, the 2nd-place finisher in every event also goes. If there is
still room, the 5th place finishers in the 100 and 200 free go. The last priority is the 6th-place finishers in the 100 and 200 frees.
There are 14 events, so in theory, each event could have 14 different winners, with a top 4 in the 100 and 200 that are completely different. If so, that would be 20 qualifying swimmers, meaning not every second-place finisher would make the team. But that's never how it shakes out--good 100m freestylers are often good 200m freestylers, or someone is good at both the 200 and 400, etc. The more swimmers who win multiple events means fewer swimmers are in that first group of event winners, and thus the next priority groups can make it in.
Brooke makes it if there are ten multiple qualifiers on the women's side. Right now, we're at 2, with Ledecky winning the 200, 400, and 1500 freestyles. Barring calamity, she'll add another in the 400, meaning she opens up 3 spots due to her wins. Simone Manuel is favored in the 50 and 100 free, so that would open up another spot. (Manuel was about 2.5 seconds slower in this morning's heat than her fastest time coming into Trials, but presumably that was done to save energy for semis tonight.) Regan Smith already won the 100 back, but she's expected to win the 200 back as well, as she's the world record holder in that event, so that would be another. She's also a threat in the 200 fly (#2 on the psych sheet coming in, but that's behind Hali Flickinger, who is great in that event), which would be yet another opened spot if she pulls that off. And even if Smith doesn't win the 200 fly, her other qualifications would mean that the second priority group of 2nd-place finishers would be a bit smaller, so that helps Brooke's chances just as much. (And Flickinger was 2nd in the 400m IM, so even if she wins and Smith is second, that priority group of second-place finishers shrinks by one more.) So, she's rooting for chalk. A big chance for that is in the 100 free, where she's hoping the top 6 (and top 4, especially) are women who have already qualified otherwise. So, she wants Manuel, Schmitt, Huske, and Curzan to have big 100 swims.
Here's a finals schedule, night by night, with expected multiple qualifiers noted for each women's race:
June 17:
200 fly: Flickinger (2nd in 400 IM) is favored, with Regan Smith (1st in 100 back, expected to win 200 back) expected to take second. In whatever order, these two finishing top two helps Forde.
June 18:
200 breaststroke: Annie Lazor is favored, with Lilly King (1st in the 100) fighting with Ella Nelson and Escobedo for second. Forde is thus rooting for King to be in the top two.
100 freestyle: Simone Manuel (also expected to win the 50) is favored, with Abbey Weitzeil, Erika Brown, Claire Curzan (2nd in 100 fly, expected to take 2nd in 50 free), Torri Huske (1st in 100 fly, could also challenge in the 50 free), Kate Douglass (2nd in 200 IM), Gretchen Walsh, and others all with good times coming into Trials, and some swimmers disappointed in other events coming through with big swims in the heats like Olivia Smoliga, Catie DeLoof, Natalie Hinds, and Linnea Mack. (We'll get more clarity after tonight's semis, since several of the favorites, including Manuel, didn't push the pace too much in their morning heats.) But Forde's interests are served best by Manuel, Curzan, Douglass, and Huske being in the top 6.
June 19:
200 back: Regan Smith (1st in 100 back) favored, with Phoebe Bacon, Kathleen Baker, and Rhyan White (2nd in 100 back) in the mix.
800 free: Ledecky (1st in 200, 400, and 1500) heavily favored, with Leah Smith likely to take second, but Ally McHugh and Bella Sims (5th in 200) in the mix.
June 20:
50 free: Manuel is favored, with Curzan (2nd in 100 fly, in the 100 free mix) second on the psych sheet, Huske (1st in 100 fly, in the 100 free mix) third, Weitzeil (likely to qualify in the 100) fourth, Kate Douglass (2nd in 200 IM, in the 100 mix) fifth, and Erika Brown (in the 100 free mix) sixth. This event is very likely to produce two swimmers who have already made the team, so while it might come down to the last day to clinch Forde's spot on the team, the 50 free should do it.

Awesome Colorado. Awesome. I had no idea it was so limited. Hope Forde can make it but that was pretty sobering news
RE: Swimming and Diving Olympic Trials -
ColoradoTree - 06-17-2021
If chalk holds, I think Brooke Forde would make it as the 24th swimmer on the women's team. So, she can afford two upsets and still make the team. Nerve-wracking, to be sure, but given the likelihood that other qualifiers are in the mix for the 100, her spot on the Olympic team looks likely right now.
RE: Swimming and Diving Olympic Trials -
ColoradoTree - 06-17-2021
In any event, the U.S. women's team is going to be great. The Australians will provide a stiff challenge, and will better us in some events, but at least on the women's side, we should have the better of them on balance, with some great battles.
But this men's team isn't going to measure up.

Excellent writeup ColoradoTree, thank you.
Brooke's dad is a sportswriter and mentioned some time ago on Twitter that she was indeed returning for another season.
