Stanford Football 2021 Predictions -
Papa John - 07-01-2021
How many regular season games will Stanford football win this fall? This prediction does not include the Pac-12 championship game, bowl game or college football playoff games.

I'm surprised that I am the low pick (so far, out of 7 votes). Reading this forum, I would have thought the median number of wins would have been about 4.

McKee plays like the second coming of Hogan in 2012, and the running game is very good. Special teams are good, but the defense, particularly the secondary, isn't where it needs to be. 9-3.

While I love love love the way you think, pcgoode, I don’t see it. I see a return to those old school Stanford teams that might score 30+…and give up 42. I have visions…nightmares…of opposing RB’s going for big yardage up the gut late in games…of Cardinal DB’s waving bye-bye at WR’s who are faster than anyone they see at Stanford not named Manuel or Ledecky…
Sigh.

That's exactly why I decided to start this poll, BC. My sense is that the minority of CardBoard users who regularly post to the forum might not represent the views of the silent majority. This is a chance for non-posters to offer their takes in an anonymous way.

The poll has closed and a plurality of voters predict 6 wins. The average predicted win total is about 6.7 and the median is 7.
On a related note, the conference media preseason poll has been around since 1961. Stanford has been picked to win the conference once, in 2016 when we finished third in the North.
Here are Stanford's conference championships and the predicted order of finish per the preseason media poll:
1970, 2nd out of 8
1971, 2nd out of 8
1999, 8th out of 10
2012, 2nd in the North
2013, 2nd in the North
2015, 2nd in the North
Here are the number of times each team has been a preseason favorite, followed by the actual number of times that team has actually won the conference/represented the conference in the highest-ranked postseason game (predicted or not):
USC: 33, 23
Washington: 9, 10
UCLA: 6, 8
Oregon: 6, 8
Arizona: 3, 0
Stanford: 1, 6
WSU: 1, 2
Utah: 1, 0
ASU: 0, 2
OSU: 0, 1
Cal: 0, 0
Colorado: 0, 0
So Cal is the only team from the AAWU/Pac-8/10/12 to have never been a preseason or postseason #1 since 1961. As everyone knows, Colorado joined in 2011. While USC has the most preseason and postseason #1 rankings, they are also the most overestimated team. On 13 occasions the Trojans did not win the conference when predicted to do so. Stanford has been underestimated every single time they won the Pac.
As mentioned elsewhere, Stanford is picked to finish 4th in the North in 2021.

Would anyone like to revise their prediction for Stanford wins this season?

Not until I see Shaw stick to the aggressive gameplanning & playcalling for more than a week or two. I don't trust him to trust his QB1.

We are now 1-1 after two games, which is where I expected us to be. Didn't get the wins and losses right though.

For those who have given us no chance to beat UFDG, consider that they needed overtime to beat FSU. Then they needed a last minute TD to beat Toledo. Then FSU lost to FCS Jacksonville State. Perhaps our chances against the Irish are not as bad as once thought.

and UW lost at home to FCS Montana 13-7 and on the road to UM 31-10 so maybe we can win that game too

I had UW chalked up as a win the whole time. Lake's coordinators suck.
Can we flip Ryan Otton?

How would it be a pre-season prediction if you could change your pick after two games? A new poll would be needed to predict record after 1-1 start.
Regardless, I would vote the same in both polls: 6-6

I'll stick with my 9-4 prediction.

I predicted 7 wins and will stick with that until I see a more consistent running attack and until I'm confident that our opponents are who we think they are.
All I know is that Stanford is alone in first place in the Pac-12 North for at least three more days and a week longer if WSU loses to USC on Saturday.
Also, why in the world is Oregon playing Stony Brook? Nothing against Stony Brook; it's AAU and all that. But if the Ducks want to play an FCS team, why not someone more local?

if the quackes should lose then just think of the headlines......."ducks got stoned!"......which maybe true in more ways and one.

Or "ducks drown in stony brook?"

Stanford plays Colgate next year. Glass houses.

I had 5 wins, which I thought would most likely come from Vandy, WSU, OSU, Cal, and one other. We now have that one other, even though I thought KSU was more likely than USC, so I have an easier time getting to 5. Given Washington's struggles to date (they are 0-2, scoring a grand total of 17 points against Montana and Michigan combined), I now see a path to six wins, but although I think over 5 wins is more likely than under 5 wins, I think my modal expectation is 5. There is even some further upside; neither ND (narrow wins against Toledo and FSU, who subsequently lost to Jacksonville State) nor Utah (loss to BYU) have impressed, some winning 7 or 8 is no longer as fanciful as it seemed before the season. That being said, Oregon looks to be "all that", and UCLA has finally turned the corner with Kelly, so the ceiling with this team is probably 8 wins.

Not to mention the game we didn't play against WIlliam and Marry last year due to COVID.

I picked 4-8. I saw a lot of promise under the lights in L.A. but I'll stay put until after the UCLA game. And again, it's about staying healthy. McKee goes down and they could flounder to no more than 3 wins, if that.
