Stanford at the US Women's Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-02-2021

As far as I can tell, Stanford has 4 players and 1 commit in the field for the US Women's Amateur this week at Westchester CC in suburban NY.

They completed their first of two stroke play qualifying rounds today. Course is playing tough. Only 13 of 156 players broke par. Stanford results:
Brooke Seay -2 (T2)
Rose Zhang +1 (T20) - the defending US Women's Amateur champion
Aline Krauter +1 (T20)
Rachel Heck +2 (T34)
Megha Ganne +7 (T108) - she is a 2022 commit

The goal is to be in the top 64 after tomorrow's round and qualify for match play. TV coverage starts on the Golf Channel on Wednesday from 11 am to 2 pm pacific. You can follow along the scoring here - https://www.usga.org/content/usga/home-page/championships/2021/u-s--women-s-amateur.html#!scoring

RE: Stanford at the US Women's Amateur - Papa John - 08-04-2021

Seay and Krauter won their matches.
Zhang is 1 down through 7, and Heck is 4 up through 6.

RE: Stanford at the US Women's Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-04-2021

Seay, Heck and Krauter advance. Zhang had a tough opponent Elle Nachmann from Penn who took advantage of some loose play on 15 and 16 by Zhang to turn a 1 down deficit into a 1 up lead. Zhang rolled in a 20 foot birdie putt on 18 but Nachmann then made her own birdie putt for a 1 up win. Zhang had 7 birdies and still lost to give you an idea of how tough a match it was.

In the round of 32 tomorrow, the match ups are:
Seay vs. Emilia Migliaccio from Wake Forest
Krauter vs. Aneka Seumanutafa from Ohio State
Heck vs. Grace Kim from Australia

Heck will be the latest to tee off at 6:10 am pacific. If any advance to the round of 16, the Golf Channel coverage will start at 12 noon.

RE: Stanford at the US Women's Amateur - winflop - 08-04-2021

I was genuinely impressed by Zhang's post-round interview. For a 17 year-old to even give an interview after a loss is impressive. For her to carry herself so well in that interview was fantastic.

Seay has her work cut out for her tomorrow. Her opponent is one of the top amateurs in the world. Then again, so is Zhang. Everyone is beatable in this format.

RE: Stanford at the US Women's Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-05-2021

Seay, Krauter and Heck all won this morning.

Seay carded only a single bogey in taking down the 2nd highest seeded player remaining in the tournament 2 and 1.

Krauter won 2 up without making a single birdie in her match.

Heck was 3 up after 5 holes and never looked back. She won 7 and 6.

In the round of 16 to be played this afternoon, the matches will be:
Seay vs. Katie Cranston, a 17 year old from Canada
Krauter vs. Cara Heisterkamp, a high school sophomore from Ohio
Heck vs. Brooke Matthews, the highest seeded player remaining in the tournament

Those matches this morning are a great lesson in how match play differs from stroke play:
Good luck to all three this afternoon.

RE: Stanford at the US Women's Amateur - winflop - 08-05-2021

Heck is on some kind of a roll this year!

If you have Peacock you can watch the Round of 16 matches today starting at noon PT

RE: Stanford at the US Women's Amateur - winflop - 08-05-2021

Seay makes a great comeback from being 2 down early to move to the quarterfinals!
Krauter was overmatched and lost 7&5. Not on her game and her opponent was -4 through 13 holes.
Heck went 2 down with 2 to play and drained a brobdingnagian 20 footer on 18 to birdie. She makes a 5-footer to save par and win on the 19th hole!

Quarterfinals tomorrow - 11am PT on Peacock
Seay vs. Rossi 10a PT
Heck vs. Bunnabodee 10:30a PT

Heck wins the 19th with a tense 4 footer to take the match! She won the final 3 holes to escape. The birdie putt she made on 18 reminded me of the one that Mariah Stackhouse made in the 2015 national championship match. Really exciting stuff to see players perform at that level with all of the pressure on the line.

In the round of 8 beginning at 10 am pacific tomorrow, the matchups include:
Seay vs. Valentina Rossi from Michigan State
Heck vs. Kan Bunnabodee from Purdue

Peacock will have free streaming coverage starting at 11 am.

Also similar in that Stackhouse was also 2 down after 16, then won the next two holes and the first extra hole to clinch the championship

I too immediately thought of Stackhouse coming back from down 2 with 2 to play to win in an extra hole.

Heck raised her game on the back nine in a major way and her opponent couldn't keep up.

Seay missed from inside 10 feet to tie the 19th hole. She should be proud for making the QFs.

RE: Stanford at the US Women's Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-06-2021

Stanford golfers have had a great run at the US Women's Amateur lately:

2017 - 5 qualified for match play (Shannon Aubert, Andrea Lee, Albane Valenzuela, Brooke Seay, Rachel Heck). Valenzuela was the runner up. Shannon Aubert was the medalist. She lost in the round of 16.
2018 - 4 qualified for match play (Ziyi Wang, Seay, Mika Liu, Valenzuela). Seay advanced the furthest, losing in the round of 32.
2019 - 5 qualified for match play (Megha Ganne, Valenzuela, Lee, Angelina Ye, Seay). Ganne, Lee and Valenzuela all made it to the semis. Valenzuela was the runner up.
2020 - 6 qualified for match play (Rachel Heck, Rose Zhang, Aline Krauter, Ye, Ganne, Sadie Englemann). Heck was the medalist. She lost in the round of 16 to Zhang who ended up winning the championship.
2021 - 4 qualified for match play (Heck, Zhang, Krauter, Seay). Seay and Heck made the quarters and now Heck will play in the semis tomorrow.

Heck misses three foot put on 18th hole to send match to an extra hole.

RE: Stanford at the US Women's Amateur - BobK - 08-07-2021

On 19 Heck’s putt is in then Out And a loss.

RE: Stanford at the US Women's Amateur - Spiny_Norman - 08-07-2021

Angelina Ye needed to 2 putt on the 18th green of her match at the 2021 NCAAs for Stanford to advance. She 3 putted and lost to a birdie on the 19th hole.

Rachel Heck needed to 2 putt on the 18th green of her semifinal match to win and advance to the finals. She 3 putted and lost to a birdie on the 19th hole.

All I can say is, that's golf.
