Women's Golf at the P12 Preview tournament - Spiny_Norman - 11-01-2021

The final fall tournament for the #1 ranked Stanford women's golf team is today through Wednesday in Hawaii at the P12 Preview.

Stanford's team is Aline Krauter, Brooke Seay, Angelina Ye, Sadie Englemann and Calista Reyes. Missing the event are 3 starters - Rachel Heck, Rose Zhang and Caroline Sturdza. They along with Rebecca Becht are playing in a special international tournament in Houston this week called The Spirit - https://www.thespiritgolf.com/the-spirit/  Heck and Zhang are the women on the US team. Sturdza is representing Switzerland and Becht is representing Belgium.

Even with the missing players, Stanford should be very competitive. You can follow the scoring for the P12 Preview here - http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=23845

So is U. of Hawaii part of the Pac-12 in women's golf, in lieu of Utah?

I'll say:  halfway through the round, our "B+" team is leading!

Only for this tournament. It's polite to invite the host school to participate.

I've never heard of the Spirit before, though it's apparently been going on for 20 years. Looks like a sort of cross between an amateur Solheim/Ryder Cup and a junior Olympics? Seems like a cool idea, at least. For those of you that follow golf closer than I do, how big of a deal is that tournament?

RE: Women's Golf at the P12 Preview tournament - Softball Fan - 11-01-2021

I read the Spirit Amateur tournament will be televised on the Golf Channel.  Please post times on TV of women's tournament when known.

After seeing Stanford's Womens Golf team has the #1 and #2 amateur players in the WORLD, I'm thinking Stanford WVB has to recruit better.

RE: Women's Golf at the P12 Preview tournament - winflop - 11-01-2021

After Round 1, the B+ team leads by two strokes
Stanford -4
U$C -2
UW -1
Utah does not have a women's golf team.

T3. Krauter -3
T6. Seay -2
T11. Ye E
T22. Englemann +1
T48. Reyes +5

I'm looking forward to talking to Coach Walker to see if she can get pull a sting and get me and my wife on Nanea next year when we'll be on the Big Island...<all fingers crossed>

I suppose I could have looked up that information, but thanks for passing it on.

RE: Women's Golf at the P12 Preview tournament - Spiny_Norman - 11-02-2021

Stanford leads USC by 3 shots after today's 2nd round. Arizona shot the best round of the day and is in 3rd, 6 shots back. Those 3 teams will be paired together tomorrow.

Stanford results:
Brooke Seay - 70 (-3)
Sadie Englemann 72 (-1)
Aline Krauter 73 (even)
Calista Reyes 76 (+3)
Angelina Ye 77 (+4)

RE: Women's Golf at the P12 Preview tournament - winflop - 11-02-2021

Stanford continues to hold a narrow lead after Round 2
Stanford -5
U$C -2
Arizona +1
Rest of teams are +8 or higher

T2. Seay -5
T5. Krauter -3
T7. Englemann E
T28. Ye +4
T41. Reyes +8

Seay & Krauter figure to contend for the individual crown tomorrow. Could end up being a breakout tournament for Sadie Englemann who has struggled to make rosters and compete well when she has. Calista Reyes rallied big time after rough start with a triple bogey on her first hole and a double bogey a few holes later. She played the rest of the day at -2 for a respectable +3 finish.

Final round shotgun start at 10:30am Pacific

RE: Women's Golf at the P12 Preview tournament - ColoradoTree - 11-03-2021

Rough stretch of holes there from Ye: -2 through 4 holes, but then five straight bogeys. On the day so far, Krauter is +2, Reyes is +4, and Seay and Englemann are both -1.

Stanford is at -2 overall and its lead is down to 1 stroke over USC. Arizona is in third at +7. Muzi is absolutely carrying USC.

RE: Women's Golf at the P12 Preview tournament - winflop - 11-03-2021

Stanford hangs on for its fourth consecutive victory!

1. Stanford -1
2. U$C +3
3. Arizona +4
4. Oregon +7

UCLA was the only other team that had any missing players at the Spirit International event, and it was only one player. Winning this tournament with such a depleted roster was a really amazing accomplishment.

Rose Zhang wasn't there win her fourth straight individual crown, but three Stanford players finished in the Top 10.
T3. Seay -5
T6. Krauter -2
T6. Englemann -2
T28. Ye +9
48. Reyes +16

Spring season will be very interesting. There are at least seven players who will contend to make the roster, and ultimately Coach Walker will have to make some tough calls when NCAAs come around

I think Stanford wasn't the only team missing players, but I doubt any of the others were missing three of their regular starters.

Is everyone a scholarship player?  If so it is tough indeed.  I would imagine that this talent on one team is pretty rare in Women's Golf.

Zhang is the world's #1 and Heck is #2.  I don't recall a college team ever having the numbers one and two.  And the back end of Krauter, Sturdza, Ye, Seay and Englemann is absurd.

Just as absurd next year.  America's number one junior, Megha Ganne, replaces Krauter.

Unless one or two transfer out, which I think is a possibility. There just aren't enough spots for all of these strong players, any of whom would easily be top five on 90% of D1 rosters. I have no idea who that would be at this point.

RE: Women's Golf at the P12 Preview tournament - ColoradoTree - 11-04-2021

I wonder if we'll see a strategic redshirt for one or two players next year to buy them an additional year of eligibility with the expectation that they'll be a grad transfer out once they get their Stanford degree. Or at this point, are incoming freshmen just betting that some of the older players will leave early for the tour?

As I understand it, women's golf is an equivalency sport, not a headcount sport, so they can spread out those 6 scholarships however they want. How on Earth Coach Walker has convinced some clearly elite golfers to take less than a full scholarship is an impressive feat.

Piggybacking on Hulk and looking at the WAGR, here's how things look:

1. Rose Zhang (Fr.)
2. Rachel Heck (So.)
17. Angelina Lei Ye (Jr.)
24. Megha Ganne (incoming Fr)
26. Aline Krauter (Sr.)
50. Caroline Sturdza (Fr.)
125. Brooke Seay (Jr.)
200. Sadie Englemann (So.)
450. Rebecca Becht (So.)
859. Calista Reyes (Sr.)
1055. Yu Wen Lu (Fr.)

Heck hasn't quite been herself in the couple of events she's played so far, but one assumes she'll be back challenging for titles soon. Seay isn't going away, either. I mean, a great problem to have, right? If you're Seay and you're squeezed out of the NCAA roster this year, do you really transfer out, knowing you have one more year and then you have a Stanford degree? Maybe Englemann transfers? But to what end? You're at Stanford, playing on an amazing golf team, and the likelihood of you going pro is fairly low. I mean, a redshirt year and then a grad transfer is a different story--I'm all in favor of folks getting a year of grad school at least partially on another school's dime.

RE: Women's Golf at the P12 Preview tournament - winflop - 11-04-2021

I think the last two spots on the current roster are between four players: Ye, Sturdza, Seay, and Englemann. Sturdza has really come on since having a great summer in Europe, while Ye has struggled so far. I'd say Seay & Sturdza are the favorites at the moment.

Just as someone might choose an expensive Stanford for school expecting it to be worth it for their professional career, so might someone expecting to become a professional golfer.
