WBB: Stanford 105 -- Clarke 35 - 81alum - 11-06-2021

Preview:

Clarke come to Maples to play an exhibition at 12 noon today, not televised.  It should be an interesting opportunity to see our potential point guards "try out" for the starting job, and to see the freshmen get some extended playing time.  I doubt it will tell us a lot about the final make up of the team--Texas will do that--but we might see some player development that we otherwise would miss.

Clarke University is a private Catholic school of 1200 students in Dubuque, Iowa, that was playing more in its league when it just beat Menlo College up the road.  I don't know the story on why we scheduled them except they were probably in the area for Menlo in a game that counted for them and thought they could extend their trip to play us in an exhibition.  Clarke is 3-1, having played other small schools so far.  Last year they were 23-3, reaching the quarterfinals of the NAIA basketball tournament.  Clarke has 5 consistent starters and 4 other players who play double digit minutes, so they spread it around.  Senior center 6'0" Emma Kelchen scores 18 ppg, junior guard 5'6" Giana Michaels scores 16 ppg with a 43% three point shot, and two others are also in double digits.

In "short," this is a talented, winning team which is going to average about 4-5" shorter than our players.  I imagine someone like Wilson or Emma-Nnopu will be assigned to smother Michaels, and poor Clarke will have to go up against posts much taller than she is.

I just signed up for The Varsity Network from the App Store. It's for iPads or iPhones. Not sure how well it works but it says the Stanford stream will begin at 11:30. The Tarleton and Morgan State games will also be streamed on this app. Better than nothing...

That's audio only, isn't it?

I see it's available for Android too.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - 81alum - 11-06-2021

Jana is not in uniform but is helping the team warm up.  I do not see any obvious sign of injury.   I bet we see a lot of Wilson today.  Brown similarly helping, and not wearing the big leg brace.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - BosCard - 11-06-2021

Brown and Van Gytenbeek on the court helping with drills but not dressed to play.  When they split into guards vs forwards to practice, Emma Nnopu and Bosgana were in the guard group and Demetre and one Hull were in the forward group.  Not sure that means anything though

The team left the floor for the national anthem.  Returned immediately after. I assume this was a protest, perhaps in lieu of kneeling.  Clarke and our coaches stayed on the floor.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - BosCard - 11-06-2021

Very small sample size (one warm up session) but Demetre is a very nice shooter both from mid-range and three.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - 81alum - 11-06-2021

Iriafan missed a dunk in the flow of practice. Belibi made her usual Dunk at the end of practice.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - Lorcan - 11-06-2021

It looks like the starters will be Anna Wilson, Lexie Hull, Haley Jones, Francesca Belibi, and Cameron Brink.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - BosCard - 11-06-2021

Starters: Wilson, Lexie, Jones, Belibi and Brink

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - Lorcan - 11-06-2021

Belibi has GOT to figure out how to hit her free throws or she'll drive me insane.

For reference, Tina Ubl -- the Clarke player who came out and hit her first two three pointers is shooting 28.6% from three on the season. A great start from her.

19-7 at the media timeout in the first quarter. Belibi off to a great start with 8pts, 4 rebounds -- but 2 missed free throws to throw in there as well.

I'm only seeing the stats for this game, so I'm not really sure what exactly I'm looking for yet outside of efficient play.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - BosCard - 11-06-2021

So far it’s been a lot of Belibi layups and rebounds. Also with Jones at the 3, some nice plays designed to get Jones in the post against a smaller defender. Emma Nnopu and Prechtek first subs

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - Lorcan - 11-06-2021

Ashten Prechtel and Agnes Emma-Nnopu in for Jones and Belibi. Interesting choice of the first subs.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - BosCard - 11-06-2021

Emma Nnopu with good perimeter defense and a couple of nice drives for layups.   Lacie Hull the backup PG for Wilson.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - 81alum - 11-06-2021

Wilson starts at point and plays very well with sharp leading passes for assists and a trey of her own.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - martyup - 11-06-2021

27 first quarter points for Stanford.   On pace for 108.  Nice

I'm listening to the audio and it's driving me crazy not to be able to watch.  So excited for this season.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - Lorcan - 11-06-2021

Slightly worrying that Lexie has started off shooting 0-4 -- hopefully she starts hitting something soon.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - BosCard - 11-06-2021

Seems like a lot of focus on getting the ball in the post.  Lots of shots for Belibi and Iriafen.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - Lorcan - 11-06-2021

4-8 from the free throw line so far.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Clarke 12pm - martyup - 11-06-2021

We lead 58 to 15 at the  half.   We ended the half on a 25-0 run.
