WBB: Stanford vs. Morgan State Thursday 3pm - 81alum - 11-08-2021
Preview:
Morgan State is a HBCU in Baltimore of about 8000 students. Their WBB team was 12-4 last year, 8-2 in conference, with several COVID cancellations. They played small schools (Syracuse was cancelled) and beat teams like Annapolis, going to the MEAC tournament and winning their first round. The tallest player on their team is 6'1", and so in many ways they look a lot like our exhibition partner--a talented and successful team that won't match up with us physically and that plays in a small conference. They play USF just before coming to Maples.
Last year, they had 12 players who averaged double digit minutes--that is extreme even compared with CTT teams--so lots of substitutions and lots of players will play. They have a 5'3" point guard who shoots treys in the upper 30s and a grad student 6'1' forward who led the team last year with 13ppg. If you want to scout them, there is a complete game from last year against Delaware State up on the web. Keep your eye on 22 and 3 for Morgan State, in the dark blue.
Last year, Morgan State played a 2-3 zone, but I saw quite a bit of player defense in this game. Morgan State also pressed some in this game.
I have to say, Morgan State does not look like an offensive juggernaut in this video.

Morgan State Bears currently playing USF on WCC network livestream. Morgan State not looking so good thus far (18-8 at end of 1st quarter). Apparently Tuesday is not a popular night to have a WBB game; less than 50 fans in the gym.

Oddly, Charlie Creme's current bracketology has us playing Morgan State (again) in the Round of 64. They are picked to win their conference's automatic qualifier.

Is tomorrow a holiday at Stanford?
Had the shock last week of noticing the game is at 3 p.m., and just tonight realized that might affect parking, since most parking options don't free up until 4 p.m.
Any ideas?

Just making a note on opponent attrition here.
Tennessee has likely lost a major contributor in Rae Burrell for the season with a knee injury. They barely survived Southern Illinois today in what should’ve been a better game for them.
Texas was absolutely scary in their win over New Orleans. 131-36. Something to look forward to.

I just saw this thread. I have to add this little anecdote. .
For the 2016 Rose Bowl (what a great time, how things change in a few years), the Stanford AD contracted the Woodland Hills Marriott as an official Stanford fan hotel. We stayed there. On the morning of January 2, at the brunch buffet, there was a basketball team eating at the same time. They were wearing Morgan State warmups. I overheard a woman asking a heavy-set middle aged man, "Are you the coach?" but didn't think much about it at the time. A day later, just out of curiosity, I googled Morgan State to see where it was located. That's when I realized that the man who was asked if he was the coach was none other than Todd Bozeman!
(For those of you unfamiliar with Todd Bozeman, enter his name on Wikipedia. It actually has, as the second paragraph, "Scandal and controversy". Bozeman had paid a recruit's parents $30 k to sign across the Bay. When the player's playing time dropped, the parents turned Bozeman in to the NCAA. Not quite sure who was more reprehensible in that transaction.)

Brink is about 5" taller than the player she is guarding. Stanford doing ok.
This game would be close if Morgan State could make its shots. Stanford playing pretty good defense.
