WBB: Stanford 56 Texas 61 - 81alum - 11-09-2021

Preview:

Texas is ranked 25 and just beat New Orleans 131-36.  Consider that score.  A freshman guard for Texas, Kyndall Hunter, scored 27 points off the bench on 7/8 three point shooting.  Our game will be on ESPN.

We played Texas at Texas 2 years ago and lost in a disappointing match.  None of the Texas starters from that game are back and almost no players at all from the team are back.  Notably graduated was center Charli Collier and transferred (to Duke) was standout guard Celeste Taylor.  However, Texas's new coach (as of last year) Vic Schaeffer has reloaded the team.  Last year Texas had a good but not outstanding year until they caught fire in the NCAA tournament, beating UCLA and Maryland before falling to South Carolina.  It certainly did not take Schaeffer long to get Texas back into the national mix.  This year he brought in three McDonald's All American freshmen into the program.  One of them just scored 27 points in her first college game.

Among the somewhat familiar players is Aliyah Matharu, another guard who was their second leading scorer in that game at 18 points.  We played her in Victoria when she was with coach Schaeffer at Mississippi State.

Texas has height, speed, and accuracy and will be the first team we play who can match up with us physically, complete with 6'4" and 6'5" players and a bevy of quick guards who Schaeffer will probably unleash on our "point guard by committee" to test our ball handling.  He was, after all, associate head coach at A&M the night their quick guards harassed Pohlen into 7 turnovers and gave all Stanford fans one of our worst memories.  That was the night in 2011 when we lost in the national semis despite a 31 point game by Nneka.  Yup, Schaeffer is a smart coach and will use the tools at his disposal to probe us for any weaknesses, and the obvious place to probe is the hole left by Williams.  We will learn very fast if our team is up to handling ball pressure.  In addition, it seems our perimeter defense will be sorely tested if Texas can come close to replicating its 56% three point shooting.

I rather wish that Morgan State were more of a step up from Clarke, to get us a little closer to being ready for an opponent that matches up with us so completely.  Texas is a good team--perhaps a very good team--and they seem to have one of the most dangerous of factors working for them--a freshman that nobody has scouted and who can seemingly drop 27 points.  Could me as both worried but also excited that we will have our most substantial early season test.

Watched 1st quarter of that game - will watch rest later. Horrible game - NOrleans is terrible, 8 freshman and 8 sophomores make up team. Texas ran full court press, lot of steals and to's but mostly due to NO's inexperience. announcers kept reiterating how Schaeffer was getting ready for Stanford. No defensive presence for NO on the boards.  If texas missed a layup they got offensive rebound.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Texas 12pm Sunday - joemontes - 11-10-2021

Morgan State starts an extremely small line-up:  5'11, 5'10, 5'7, 5'6 and 5'3, while their top 2 subs are 5'10 and 5'8.
One thing they do well is defensive pressure, resulting in several steals.  So Stanford will get tested by Morgan State
in that respect, which should serve as a decent preparation for the full court pressure that Texas is probably planning
to unleash on them.

I'd be surprised if we had much trouble with a press from players that "short" since we could see over them easily and pass over them easily, or should be able to.  Just whip the ball over their heads...  But seriously, it is good if they do press, just for the practice.  Texas had a lot of turnover in their roster I believe so they may be more vulnerable early in the season.

Two Words: “California Baptist” When we played that team in Victoria we thought they looked like a high school team during warm-ups. They played Stanford really close, couldn’t miss from the three, and were very fast. What looked like a “gimme” turned into a uncomfortably close game.

Excellent point. If I recall correctly, that was the game in which Jump exploded and save it. OR was that another game?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Texas 12pm Sunday - Lorcan - 11-11-2021

It was Nadia Fingall who put on the superhero cape and saved the day that time, scoring 18 points in just 14 minutes of play on 8-14 shooting. Kiana also scored 10 of her 15 points in the second half -- definitely a team effort that day to stave off an upstart.

Yes, and for her offensive and defensive efforts, Nadia was awarded the MVP of the tournament! I remember the joy expressed by the team celebration honoring Nadia's accomplishment. And, yes, other team members had to step up, including Jump, for us to win that holiday tourney.
That was the season that was interrupted by Covid. We were blessed to be able to enjoy those November games in person, given the very few games we got to see before the Covid restrictions came into play!
All that makes today’s game even more special!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Texas 12pm Sunday - CardinalWBBFan - 11-11-2021

The key to beating Texas will be limiting our turnovers. Schaefer's and Mississippi State's pressure gave Stanford's guards a lot of issues. UNO was really, really bad, so it's difficult to tell how good Texas actually is.

1) Tara will be concerned about 21 turnovers.  If we do that against Texas we will lose--and Texas is better equipped than Morgan State to force turnovers.  Wilson with 1 assist and 3 turnovers, Jones and Lexie with three turnovers each as well.  Many of them were "trying to do too much" sorts of turnovers--trying to zip the ball in for a spectacular play.  If Morgan State got deflections imagine what Texas will do.  I bet this is a priority focus the next couple of days.

Meanwhile, Texas played an exhibition game against Oklahoma Baptist University.  That team went 3-16 in a NCAA Division II conference (GAC) last year.  Texas had 15 turnovers.

Then Texas played New Orleans of the Southland Conference.  Last year's RPI was #337 (out of 343).  For comparison, Morgan State was #243.
Texas had 12 turnovers.  It must have been an ugly game.  Remember how the refs in the Stanford game started making calls in favor of the team far behind in the 2nd quarter?  In the Texas game, New Orleans had 6 players with 4 fouls and 2 with 3 fouls (total of 33).  Texas had 43 FTA.  That will keep your TO down!  Texas also got 58% of the rebounds on their own shots (UT: 23 OR; OBU 17 DR;  Texas missed 19 FTA (apparently 9 were first of 2FT), 20 2pt, 10 3pt)

As I believe was already said, Texas hit 13 of 23 3pt shots.  Texas's starting five were relatively short but their two better tall players (6'4", 6'5") played 20 and 16 minutes.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Texas 12pm Sunday - 81alum - 11-13-2021

Vic Schaeffer press conference:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDG1sRrBZe0

He talks about their recruiting, discusses the problems of transfers and "instant gratification" players, and gets to Stanford late at 27:30.  He doesn't say much of anything about strategy.  "Attention to details" and "relaxed and focused."   "You can't be all tied up...turn it loose....nobody gives you a snowball's chance in hell...play the game you've always played..." etc.  Clearly, he is concerned that his young team will come in intimidated and he wants them to relax and play the game.

He seems to have a lot of respect for Tara, and has a folksy good-ol' boys demeanor.  Interesting.  He probably understands player psychology pretty well.

This was the video after their 130+ point win earlier this week:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWqxLeLwEq4

At 8:00 minutes he discusses using the game to get ready for Stanford, and discusses his players a bit more.  A very young but very talented team.  They started 2 freshmen and he raved about the other 2 frosh as well.  The coach and players seemed absolutely ebullient.

I think we will have a very competitive game tomorrow, a serious test.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Texas 12pm Sunday - TheWildJacko - 11-14-2021

Geez, even when we win a title our press sucks. Game description on DirectTV guide is all Texas:

"The No. 25 Longhorns try to keep rolling when they visit the No. 3 Cardinal. Texas blasted New Orleans 131-36 on Nov. 9, posting, thé second-highest point total in program history. Longhorns freshman guard Kyndall Hunter had 27 points in 14 minutes."

They can't even add the words "defending national champion" before mentioning Stanford.

The Band Is here!  Feels much more like a real game.  Texas looks like its posts average a foot taller than our last two opponents.

Stanford women’s soccer players in the house too with some truly epic signs!

Saw Tara walk out of the locker room earlier with a young woman and her parents… do any more dialed-in posters recognize a recruit in the stands?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Texas 12pm Sunday - 81alum - 11-14-2021

Iriafan dunked in normal practice, though few noticed.  Belibi finished with her usual warm up dunk.

Ah. They took the jackets off

Getting open 3s but not hitting yet

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Texas 12pm Sunday - TheFarm07 - 11-14-2021

A 10-10 tie after the first quarter as we've both been sloppy and cold - 23% overall and 0/8 from long range plus 6 turnovers for us.

Fortunately, Texas hasn't been much better either - 25% from the field.
