We go to Minny in the Baylor bracket

The last trip to Minnesota went well... Though we didn't play Minnesota.

First round vs. Iowa State.

Beat Minnesota, and we go to the Wisconsin regional.

2016 Regional Final at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse, a freshmen laden Stanford team stuns Carlini and the Wisconsin Badgers with a reverse sweep.  And then goes on to win the National Championship.

Set five was possibly the most exciting set by a Stanford team I have ever watched.

The draw is… not bad.  Minnesota is the 12 seed, and though they will be a tough out, if we are playing up to potential, we have a chance to win.  Then it would be a regional with UCLA, Wisconsin, and Baylor.  Not an easy regional, but not impossible.

Stanford opponents from this season in the tournament:
#2 Texas (Stanford lost 0-3)
#7 Kentucky (Stanford lost 2-3)
#10 Nebraska (Stanford won 3-1)
#12 Minnesota (Stanford lost 1-3)
#13 UCLA (Stanford lost 2-3)
#15 Washington (Stanford lost twice, 0-3 and 1-3)
#16 Florida (Stanford won 3-1)

Stanford also played unseeded Penn State (3-2), Oregon (2-3 and 0-3), Utah (3-1 and 3-1) and Washington State (3-2 and 3-1).

Overall that's 2-6 vs. seeded tournament teams and 5-2 vs. unseeded tournament teams.

I appreciate the intent, but if there ever was a season that the regular season record didn't mean much for what might happen with Stanford in the post-season, this is it.  However, it is clear that Stanford isn't a well-oiled machine - not enough time together.

RE: WVB: NCAA Tourney - cardfan77 - 11-28-2021

If Stanford is healthy and passing is above average then Stanford can compete with anyone.  Both Baird and Kipp have been on fire lately especially the bic play to Kipp. Hopefully, Stanford plays their best volleyball of the season during the tournament.

RE: WVB: NCAA Tourney - BostonCard - 11-29-2021

Having Kipp able to attack out of the back row really enhances the attacking options, and is why having a true 6 position player is such an asset.

All I ask from this team during this NCAA Tournament is to stay healthy, take it one match at a time, play to their utmost individual and collective abilities while staying relaxed and enjoying every moment.

That's a lot to ask!

Iowa State's tallest players are 6'2".  Here's where I see the challenge for Stanford.  Seven of ISU's players are listed as DS/L (Defensive Specialist/Libero)  That means their coaching staff has 7 players to choose from to pass and play back row defense.  Stanford is using Berty in the backrow in some rotations.  Berty is 6'2" and never specialized in playing the back row.

You're right, but I'm pretty sure that's what their coaching staff is also asking from them.  And those components comprise what has to be the typical individual and collective mindset come NCAA Tournament time, anyway.

FWIW this is the final regular season AVCA poll released today.

https://www.avca.org/polls/di-women/11-29-2021.html

Stanford at #18.

Creighton at #20 and Florida at #21 both get to host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament.  I don't think Florida deserved to host.

could that be a regional travel cost thing?

That's not _supposed_ to be a factor in deciding who gets seeded.
Cost only factors into which unseeded teams get sent to which site, if I understand correctly.

There was some chatter on VT about the committee using last week's RPI, which would be strange and not the previous practice.
I believe Florida was #15 last week, before their two final losses.

Note, the committee uses RPI, not the coaches' poll:

Stanford is #26 in that, still well below Florida (#21) and Creighton (#8)

Man, I used to replay this momentous match over and over again over the Christmas holidays spanning Dec 2016-Jan 2017.  This was indeed the turning point of the careers of that PLUMMER-led Stanford 2016 freshman class, who would later on become the 2nd most successful 4-year dynasty in WCVB history, tied with the FOLKL-led Stanford 1994 freshman class and 2nd only to the Penn State 2007 freshman class who never lost a match in their 4-year stint in the NCAA Tournament but spearheaded by Megan HODGE for three years  from 2007-2009.

Per NCAA Tournament Twitter, all 1st and 2nd Round matches will be shown on the internet-driven ESPN+
