I got dinged for posting my preview of our last game too early, leading to thread drift, so delayed but got beaten to the punch! In any case, here is my preview:
Preview:
Tennessee is undefeated this season at 9-0 and has the fans there excited more than they have been since Pat’s days. They are ranked 7/9 and Massey has them at 8. They have not played the highest ranked teams so far, so we are their chance to make a statement. Tennessee's best wins were over South Florida and Texas, which both beat us—they edged both of those two by 3 points and 4 points respectively, and they have noticed this--it was mentioned in their presser. All in all, Tennessee has proven they are good this year—but the truth is that even they don’t know exactly how good, and once they play us they will have a better idea.
Coaching Tennessee is Kellie Harper, in her 3rd year after replacing Hollie Warlick. Kellie is also an alum of their program and seems to be doing much better than Hollie. Last year they were 17-8, her first year 21-10, and their 9-0 start has the fans excited about a possible return to greatness.
Tennessee is not a big three point shooting team, making 26% and fewer than 4 baskets per game. However, they do have three players each shooting 33-34% from three point range which is enough to keep defenses honest about defending the perimeter.
Tennessee has been turnover prone this year, having more turnovers than their opponents—averaging 18 per game, but they have nearly 7 blocks per game, indicating a strong inside presence.
6’2” Junior guard Jordan Horsten is their leading scorer at 16 ppg. 6’6” Junior center Tamari Key is second with 10 ppg and 10 rpg and has blocked 36 shots already. Brink will not have an easy time with her. The rest of the scoring is distributed fairly evenly throughout the team—they do not seem to be too dependent on any one player to score other than the two mentioned. Rae Burrell is out indefinitely with an injury, having played in only 1 game this year, and this led to much discouragement among the Tennessee fans until the team showed it could win without her.
Here is what Harper said about Stanford:
Quote:"Well, Stanford, they present a lot of challenges. I think you start looking at the personnel, they're going to be bigger than us. That doesn't happen a lot, but they will be bigger than us. They're very intelligent. They pass the ball extremely well, so if you goof on defense, they're going to make you pay. They shoot the ball well. They obviously have interior scoring. It's really been their go-to. They get the ball inside, and then they've got a lot of options outside of that. Their transition offense is spectacular. And then, defensively, they just take away your strength. Whatever your strength is, each team is going to find out what their strength is, and they're going to play through the weaknesses. That's their game plan, defensively. So, I think those are things we're going to have to combat. We're going to have to play really well, we know that, but it's, again, just such an exciting opportunity.

We are 3-13 all time AT Tennessee. Personnel and style wish, I don't think they are an opponent we match up particularly well with. Rebounding and limiting turnovers will both be important keys to victory. I'm predicting a lowish scoring game and Stanford victory. Glad it's on ESPN2.
I also like Harper and think she's done a really nice job rebuilding after the Warlick disaster.

It is the kind of game that Prechtel, if she is shooting the three well, might be very impactful. Tennesee's Key might get Brink into foul trouble or muscle her away from the basket, but I doubt that Key would be able to come out to defend a three point shooter well.
Brink was a pretty good three point shooter, but I don't think I have seen her making them recently.

The outcome of this game is hard to predict, even without their best player BURRELL, but I'm really encouraged by what I saw with Stanford's offensive schemes vs. UC Davis. I have a feeling that Haley JONES will finally break out of her shooting funk and lead them to victory, so I'll say Stanford wins by a single-digit margin in a low-scoring game.

Weird. ESPN's website says it's on ESPN2. Went to set it to record on DirecTV and it says ESPN2 is showing volleyball.

Mine too, Comcast, ESPN2. But there was a game a while back, can't remember which, that the on-screen guide said was on ESPN2 and it was in fact on ESPN (or vice versa) -- so check both

Looking better now, must have updated. Everyone in the house thought we were going crazy. (If it was just me, well, y'know...).

Disney (ESPN, ABC) just left YouTubeTV but fortunately my backup, Sling, works. Sling also carries all regions of Pac-12 network, and I usually activate it this time of year for WBB.

Thanks for the reminder. They have a special renewal offer right now--prepay for two months, get a free Chromecast.

ESPN2 giving it all sorts of pre-game hype in the minutes just before the game

The pre-game talk before the game by announcers is cliche'd (like players who say "We just take them one at a time"). Sigh.

Should've hooked up my FitBit to my shoulder. Just shakin' with nerves this game.
Is Fran on the bench?

We lead 17-13 after one quarter. Both teams started off slow, I think it took almost half a dozen combined shots from both teams to finally land one, but it's been closely contested. A couple miscues and Brink forced to the bench early with a foul, but we've held our own.
Good to see Iriafen getting playing time early in the game.
