OT: KDFC - Phogge - 12-31-2021

KDFC, with various transmitters throughout Northern California has been playing the top 250 classical, operatic and movie scores for the past few days. Voted for by listeners.
They are on the last 38 today and will conclude with #1 as the clock strikes midnight PST.

I listen to 89.9 from the tiny town of Angwin, in the hills between the Napa and Pope Valleys.

Coming up in the next few minutes is Copeland’s Fanfare for the Common Man followed by Sibelius’ Finlandia. Sorry, the Stanford alma mater didn’t make it. Much more enjoyable than watching depleated teams play “meaningless games.”

I agree with Phogge's endorsement of KDFC. I listen to it on 104.9 in the South Bay.

A few years back, KDFC was purchased by USC and became a non-profit, donor-supported station. I'm usually not a big USC fan, but I appreciate USC's keeping classical music on the air in the Bay Area.

I've listened to KDFC for a few hours most days for decades. I've sampled other classical stations around the English-speaking world over the internet and never found one I like as much (although I did enjoy hearing the local accents and news/events). The only drawback to KDFC for me is hearing the occasional USC mentions--I hate that I can't remember stuff I want to but the names of the various USC "schools" have been drilled into my brain (e.g., the USC Viterbi School of Engineering).

Anyone remember KKHI? It was great having two classical music stations to choose from back in the day. 

I also miss when KDFC had a strong signal on one frequency, instead of weak signals that come in poorly for me on several frequencies. I imagine their coverage area is wider this way, though.

Yes! "Your radio concert hall." I preferred it to KDFC (but listened to both) until it disappeared in 1994. My favorite thing about KKHI was that when they announced the name of the piece they were about to play, they always added the year it was composed. It allowed regular listeners to build over time a sense for music history. When KKHI was sold, I wrote to KDFC suggesting they adopt this custom but no dice. I've never found another classical station that routinely does this.

There are two Roski Schools at SC. Ed Roski is the largest landowner in LA County and a prince of a man. His son Trey and a cousin invented “Battlebots.” I spent a couple of weeks traveling the country shooting profiles of eight school engineering programs that submitted contestants in the TV show. I learned a lot about engineering machines. One of my most fun assignments.

I never could quite understand the inter school hatred. To continue it into adulthood mystifies me. Our biggest rival was Santa Clara and their fans, probably Mick and others, lobbed some beauties at us in Buck Shaw Stadium. However you turned around from the sidelines or dugout to see who was so clever and all you saw was some pencilneck and all you could do was turn around and laugh.

KCSM is the KDFC of jazz, FYI.  It is the descendant of the old KJAZ in the Bay Area. Essential listening for jazz aficionados.

+2 for KCSM and another +1 for KDFC. I listen with Terry on 104.9. Both can be streamed over the internet and I frequently feed them through my new handmade 12 wpc 300b SET amplifier.  (A Covid project. Santa brought me a pair of matched Western Electric tubes made in Georgia, USA.)  The stations have excellent audio. I've pulled over more than once to snap pictures of my car entertainment center (both come in HD), so I can find pieces I like on Tidal later.

I used to really like Bird of Paradise on KZSU for Saturday morning blues, but I'm not sure he's still around.

KEXP out of Seattle (U Dub) is outstanding, and I will stream my old stomping-ground station, KBCO in Boulder.  I listen to a classical station out of Venice, IT just about every night to close it out. Internet radio is awesome.  How did we live before?  (Yeah, I still have a fully analog setup and 50-year old records that sound great today. You know, for when the internet is down.)

Not really very apropos, but the mention of Internet radio reminded me. Driving home one day I tried asking "Hey Google" to play KZSU for me.  It insisted on playing KCSU instead, no matter how hard I tried to voice the Z.  Saying "K Zed S U" didn't help.

First world problems...

IMHO unfortunate they only made one Master and Commander movie.  Book series is quite extensive.

Love the drift. I second your opinion on M&C. They had another script but the budget was way up there. Crowe has or had a band, played the violin and was a knitter. A star and underrated as an actor.

When I was at Stanford living in my fraternity house (early 80s), I would often listen to KDFC or KKHI with headphones in bed so I could sleep.  It was so loud in the house with guys and girls running up and down the halls that I had a hard time getting to sleep.  

It really worked, however it took me decades before I could listen to classical music without getting drowsy.  Which meant that I couldn't listen to it while driving.

I now listen often to KAGU 88.7, which is broadcasted from Gonzaga University.
