Cotton Bowl up first. Cincinnati vs. Alabama about to kickoff.

Pac-12 officials!

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - JJJ - 12-31-2021

Yes, I switched away from Wazzu CMU.

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - OutsiderFan - 12-31-2021

Alabama went RIGHT down the field with 10 straight runs, then a short pass TD.

I would imagine Cincy was expecting a lot more pass, but Alabama is missing their top WR, so maybe should have started with more guys at LOS on defense.

Nick Saban just demonstrated some of what makes him such a great coach.  Called TO after Cincy rolled down the field to Bama 9, and they didn't gain another yard, settling for a FG instead.

Of course, why Cincy stopped running once inside the 9 is a mystery to me, given they had 5 YPC on first drive.

Their top WR is Jameson Williams, not Metchie. I think Alabama just wanted to pound on Cincinnati and let them know who's boss.

Metchie was the most reliable first down getter for them. Williams their biggest play threat.

Except, had first down pass not been batted down, Cincy had 6.

Williams 68-1,445 yards (21.3 ypc), 15 touchdowns.
Metchie 98-1,142 yards (11.9 ypc), 8 touchdowns.

Yes, Metchie was their most reliable first down target, certainly not their top WR. Williams being out would be much more damaging.

Backup is probably close to as good.  After all, these guys played behind two No.1 picks.  They have so much depth and talent.

Not sure if this is what you meant but you're right: last year Metchie played behind Jaylen Waddle and DaVonta Smith, Williams played behind Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson. Scary.

Yes and no.  Didn’t realize that Williams transferred from OSU.

I was confident Alabama would beat Cincinnati, but this is looking a little mis-matchy with less than 5 mins left in the second quarter.

Cincinnati holding Alabama to FGs and Alabama just missing one, is keeping them in it!

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - terry - 12-31-2021

Total yards in the first half -- Alabama 302, Cincinnati 76. That's pretty one-sided.

The most telling stat is rushing yards per play: Alabama 6.9, Cincinnati 1.7. Alabama (mostly Robinson) is running at will and controlling the game.

If Cincy wants to stay (or get) in this game, they need to get some points first drive.

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - old spanish trail - 12-31-2021

Desmond Ritter a top 10 pick. Think not.

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - OutsiderFan - 12-31-2021

Cincy looking like a different team on first drive of second half until drive stalled and had to settle for FG.

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - OutsiderFan - 12-31-2021

OK, Alabama has asserted its dominance and ended the drama (if there ever was any).

Before anyone buries Cincinnati as a "Group of 5 doesn't belong," there are a whole lot of Power 5 teams who could have been similarly curb stomped in a playoff semi-final against Alabama.

RE: College Football Playoff Thread - JJJ - 12-31-2021

I believe the announcers said something like “every single recruiting class by Saban at Bama has experienced a national championship”—that’s pretty impressive.

Yep.  Great coach obviously. Even better recruiter. They have the one or two class every single year. So unbelievable talent and he knows what to do with it.

I don't think (m)any believe Cincy was undeserving of a CFP spot.  And without question, Alabama would have beaten down many an opponent in semis.  I'm hoping (and expecting) Michigan-Georgia to be more competitive.  But if either team gets out to a big lead early, things could snowball as those defenses might just be in attack-the-QB mode.  Don't see that happening, but we'll find out soon enough.
