WBB: Stanford 66 Gonzaga 50 - 81alum - 01-08-2022

Preview:

With Oregon State cancelling their game with us, Gonzaga was quick to jump in as a replacement game, making this an away-and-home series this year with them. 

Unfortunately, Pac 12 networks does not appear to have the rights to broadcast the game, but it is listed as being on Stanford livestream.  Perhaps that will change--I'm sure these arrangements were made in a hurry.

Last time we played them we struggled to a 66-62 win without the services of Jones, described here:

We fell behind 13-23 after the first quarter.  Brink was in foul trouble and Jones unable to play.  Gonzaga shot lights-out.   Jump and Prechtel came into the game and hit shots to close the gap and get us back in it.

Since that game, Gonzaga has gone 6-2 with its best win being a drubbing of Utah, but it lost to WSU by 2 and to UC Davis by 3.  So it has shown it can compete and win games against Pac 12 teams. Massey has them at 41--better than Utah, Washington State, and UCLA for comparison.

4 of their 5 starters average over 10ppg, and the 5th averages 8--so they are very difficult to defend due to the balance.  Cierra Walker is hitting 44% of her treys and she is prolific--essential to guard the perimeter with her.  The Truong twins are each hitting more than 38% of their treys.

Gonzaga should not be taken lightly, but what does it say about us (or them, for that matter) that they had us on the ropes and we barely won that game, yet they lost games to two opponents we crushed?

Playing in Gonzaga's home environment is also difficult--it is not an easy trip and they have a big fan base.  Home court advantage counted a lot for them.  Obviously, we won't have much of a home court advantage given that fans won't be there, but at least Gonzaga is traveling and won't have an emotional crowd behind them.

Not only were we missing Jones during out first game, Brink played only 19 minutes and sporadic stretches due to foul trouble, and Jerome wound up playing for 14 minutes without scoring.  We were still sorting out point guard responsibilities.  So, all in all, I think we should play better than we did the first time around.

Gonzaga, on the other hand, has had 3 out of 4 of their most recent games postponed, so they also are looking anywhere to find games to play.  They were supposed to play Santa Clara today and that got postponed, so staying over a day to play us makes a lot of sense from their point of view.

Once again Tara takes on a challenge for her team.  Gonzaga is no easy team where we can get a lot of playing time for the non-starters.  I'm sure she is glad this works out for both teams.

After Jones got smacked in the head last night, I wouldn't be surprised if she isn't available again against the Zags.  I can't believe they didn't call a foul on that.

She came back in against Oregon.  That doesn’t preclude delayed symptoms, but I find it heartening that she wasn’t immediately put on the concussion protocol.

Initially I really thought it might be a concussion.  But when she came back from the locker room she was showing the bench something on her lip and looked pretty lively, so I felt more optimistic

But didn't a couple of those headscratcher turnovers come after she came back in?  She just didn't seem at 100% after she got smacked.

Not a lot of insightful information there, except:

1) One fan posted "Cudos to Stanford leadership for being proactive and protecting their student athletics.  Hope the Gonzaga President and Director of Athletics follow suit and protect the Gonzaga student athletes."

2) There are some fans there who clearly admire Tara and are critical of their own coach.  They allege Lisa Fortier plays less talented seniors and juniors over more talented freshmen and sophomores.  "The fact that Coach Fortier is extensively tweaking the lineup week to week this far into the schedule is a telling sign. She has yet to find an upperclassman dominated lineup that consistently brings a complete game to the court. When she occasionally puts together a group of five that excel, she inexplicably begins subbing players in and out, disrupting the flow. The loss to Cal Davis has to be the most disheartening fourth quarter collapse in the last two decades (at least) of Zag women's basketball, right up there w/the men's 2006 disaster vs UCLA."

3) Their board discusses their players using their first names.

4) They think Stanford has nothing to gain and everything to lose by scheduling this game.

I use the word "they" liberally.  Not clear there more than a handful of posters there.  Perhaps there is a better site for their fans.

I take all this with a shaker of salt. Lisa Fortier has shown she can beat us, and seems to be to be an excellent coach. She is 188-50 as a head coach.

Maybe this was brought up in the discussion and I missed it.   Does this count in official W/L standings as a regular game or is this considered an exhibition game?

This game counts as an official W/L. Gonzaga is probably right that they stand more to gain with a marquee win over Stanford boosting their resume. For Stanford, this likely only gets them another Top 25-30 NET ranking. With that being said, I think that the intangible of keeping our players game sharp will only help us in the PAC, especially with Colorado on tap.

And as the players agreed with Tara in the presser, they'd rather play a game than have more practice. Yes, keeping "game sharp" can only help.
