Add tp the list of players with eligibility bolting the program.

i suppose this makes it easier for Shaw to get down to 85 scholarships, but we'll miss him.

Suspect he wants to play more. Wonder if Smith has passed him on the depth chart.
I know Teejers you think that this is some program incitement. Maybe so. Doubt it. But who knows. What I do know is it’s the new reality in College football. Free agency. With no contracts.

Maybe he just wants to go to a place where they can run the football. Stanford placed #125 out of 130 teams in rushing last year. They averaged a paltry 87 yards p/g. The OL is just a shadow of what they once were. It's sad. I miss those days of Smash Mouth Football under Shaw.

Much as it pains me, I think it's a good football move for one of the four (Jones, Peat, EJS, Filkins) to move on from Stanford.
All have good reason to believe in their abilities and is clear that not all will get the shot they need.
No idea whether whether there's anything else behind it, good chance there is, but not surprising either.

Filkins gives them a pass/run threat. He and Farrell are potential big play guys and need to be on the field.

Maybe he just wants to go to a place where he doesn't get lit up behind the LoS when he gets the ball.

His HS teammate from Columbia, MO (Manuel) is publicly urging Peat to join him back home at Missouri.

And per informed posters on TOS, Austin Jones to the portal, as well. (A paraphrasing of reason for Jones' decision: "a joyless and lifeless program." Don't know if that's exact quote or just hearsay exaggeration, but regardless, hard to see these developments as a positive reflection on the program).

The good news, such as it is, is that we only need one more player to depart to make the scholarship math work out.

True seniors I believe.
If the reason is as stated then Shaw is a lame duck. Perhaps cleaning house time?

Yikes. But rest assured, Shaw has the staff he needs to right the ship!

The portal activity does not necessarily mean anything is wrong with the program, the coaches or the team culture. There may be problems, but the era of reading a lot into each outbound transfer is long gone.
We need look no further than Alabama.
Does anyone believe Alabama has a coach that is struggling to motivate players?
Does anyone believe Alabama has some hidden toxic team culture?
And yet, just a day after the CFPCG 7 Bama players jumped into the portal. Amazingly, Georgia WON the CG and even they have 2 players seeking better opportunities.
https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/33044321/alabama-crimson-tide-seven-players-enter-college-football-transfer-portal
In 2022 players moving to the portal is just a reality. Based on Bama's experience I feel we can conclude that in future seasons every team will see some meaningful percentage of the players seeking to move. (Not enough play time, not starting, 5 star recruit coming in, 5 star transfer coming in, better NIL opportunities elsewhere, etc.)
The problem for Stanford will be that while many can leave, very very few can enter. And that's not going to change.
That lack of inbound traffic will mean a critical tool that other teams will use to address gaps will not be an option.
Hopefully, Stanford athletes will be less likely to jump into the transfer portal just because of the value of the Stanford degree and experience, but going forward Stanford may see more players leave if they genuinely believe their NFL prospects will improve in different programs.

The most overlooked factor is the number of transfers at every school this year is the “non-count” of the 2020 season. That has created a logjam on rosters across the country since, “super seniors” count against the 85 scholarship limit beginning in 2022.
There should be no surprise that many guys who graduated (and many who haven’t) are moving on to seek better opportunities on the field. Heck, coaches are probably encouraging them to check out the landscape.
Specific to Stanford, in a post-COVID world where the 2020 non-season no longer impacts roster decisions, I would think very, very few players will transfer before securing a degree. However, once they have the degree in their pocket, they will certainly be in the same position as their counterparts elsewhere - looking for the best deal…..

a couple notes. the Alabama portal guys are guys who are not starters or have been overrecruited or both. Jones and Peat were 1st and 2nd in RB depth chart (by starts and snaps) and certainly not overrecruited. hopefully, with 3 summer class loads completed, both Jones and Peat are close to graduation. if not, it is even harder to put lipstick on this pig.

Combined with lack of staff upgrades, I do take this as a bad sign. Really hope I am wrong . . .

Quite a few NY6 teams had starters bolting into the portal. Several teams with pretty decent seasons had starters and even all-conference types jumping to the portal too. In many cases there was a coaching change or some other catalyst, but almost every program in the Power5 has quite a few players in the portal. Maybe 20 years ago when transfers had restrictions there was a clear problem if players were seeking to transfer, but going forward we will see players in the portal for all kinds of reasons.
It really doesn't matter why players leave, Stanford's problem is that as more and more players opt to use the transfer portal it will be harder and harder for Stanford to remain competitive. Stanford athletes will be highly coveted transfers for almost any program, but few outsiders will be able to navigate the admissions gauntlet. Also, one major benefit of the transfer portal seems to be that players can start the process AND get closure in just a few weeks that clearly is not happening with Stanford admissions even if they could ultimately get into Stanford.

so now it looks like players in the transfer portal tweet about their offers
for Peat he shows offers from WKU, WSU, Purdue, and Missouri.
Jones shows an offer from WSU.

WSU needs to replace Borghi. Perhaps casting a wide net. Jones could do that IMHO. He can catch, he can pass block. He wouldn't get to run a lot, but when he did it would probably be with a surprise factor advantage. Not sure Peat can, but who knows. Bigger question would be can either one beat out Nakia Watson?

1. Of course it matters why Stanford players are entering the portal. Do you really believe there is no difference between a player who has his degree and just wants some PT on the field, any field, for one final attempt at gridiron glory versus a starter who enters the portal because he thinks the program is going nowhere and is no fun anymore?
2. "Stanford players will be coveted transfers for almost any program." Really? What in the world do you base that on? And if true, isn't that MORE alarming? That really coveted players with eligibility are bailing on Stanford University (and Stanford football) to play elsewhere?
