Men's BB: Stanford 62 WSU 57 - Papa John - 01-12-2022
No rest for the Covid weary, to paraphrase John Calvin. The Stanford men take on NET #50 Washington State in Pullman at 2 pm on Thursday (ESPNU). In the varying veridicality of the NET rankings, Stanford, up to NET #85, is currently 2-2 versus Quad 1 opponents but 0-2 versus Quad 2. WSU is 0-1 versus Quad 1 opponents and 1-2 versus Quad 2. Because Thursday's game is away versus a top 75 team, a win versus WSU would, at least for now, give Stanford another Quad 1 win. However, Stanford would be a Quad 3 opponent for WSU.
WSU is 9-6 (2-2) with wins versus Alcorn State, Seattle, UC Santa Barbara, Winthrop, Weber State, Northern Colorado and at Idaho, ASU and Utah. The ASU game was 18-10 at halftime, which must have been unbearable to watch. WSU also blew a 19-point lead at home versus Eastern Washington. Other losses were to USC (by 2 points), South Dakota State (by 3 points), New Mexico State (by 3 points), Boise State (by 6 points) and Colorado (by 5 points).
WSU averages 9 made 3-pt FGs per game and shoots free throws pretty well. They have out-rebounded their opponents by 5.9 pg and have forced an average of 14.2 turnovers pg. Their leading scorer is guard Michael Flowers, who is averaging 13.2 ppg. Junior foward DJ Rodman--son of Dennis Rodman--averages 19 minutes pg and 5.9 ppg. Noah Williams and Tyrell Roberts are other notable players for the Cougars. Williams scored 40 pts when WSU defeated Stanford in Pullman in triple overtime last year. Prior to that, Stanford had won 4 in a row at WSU.
I'm assuming that the 2 pm tipoff is an accommodation for Stanford's compressed schedule, but I have no idea whether or not WSU will have fans in the stands.
For those who are looking at the slightly bigger picture, Stanford last swept the WA schools on the road in February 2020.

Flowers and Roberts are both transfers. Williams is a junior as well. Continual support of how to build a competitive MBB roster - vets and transfers. Overall I do think Kyle Smith is a solid coach, and the rest of their rotation outside those two are his own recruits...but you just can't ignore two starters, and their #1 and #3 leading scorers, being transfers.
I expect a loss here and hope I'm wrong. To be clear, this is definitely a winnable game given Wazzu's resume to date. But Haase's teams haven't proven they can keep it going after a big win, and Noah Williams must be licking his chops after last time. A win here would be more significant than we think, IMO.
A bit surprisingly, Wazzu is favored by 7. I'm sure fans in the stands (if applicable...not sure) help that spread a bit, but being favored by more than USC was?

Yeah, ESPN's Basketball Power Index gives WSU a 77.3% probability of winning. I, too, am concerned about a letdown both mentally and in terms of conditioning, but I'm surprised that WSU is rated that much better at home than Stanford.
Per 247sports, Maxiume Raynaud is still going through Covid protocols and is doubtful for the WA trip.

A 2PM game allows them to get out of Pullman while those 7PM or 8PM adds complexity getting out of town. I think most road teams would be happy to play midafternoon, especially as that likely will reduce the rowdiness of the home crowd.

Stanford still has quite a few of challenging games against UofA, UCLA and USC, so wins against the rest are really critical.

WSU is going to play without Tyrell Roberts, one of their best.
Game is delayed now (15 minutes) due to Covid protocol. WSU coach is on the cell phone, so it looks like maybe WSU got some positive Covid tests.

To be fair, the moderators are allowing Covid discussion that directly relates to Stanford sports. A recent long thread under a title about restricting fan attendance at games attests to this fact. When the discussion drifts into general Covid debate, it will be stopped.

It seems like this is a WSU issue based on how the Stanford players and staff are walking around.
I would guess the delay helps the road team as it just gives them more time to familiarize themselves with the arena sight lines. Presumably WSU players are familiar with shooting in that arena when it is essentially empty.

If WSU cancels due to Covid, we had better get this counted as a win. It should be considered a forfeit.
It would be tragic to make the trip out to the frigid tundra of the Palouse, get the team suited and warmed up, and then have to get back on the bus with nothing to show for it.

Seems like WSU already has a numbers problem, so I really hope they get this game in.
Would be awful to go all the way to Pullman and then need to leave without getting a game.
