Mahomes vs Allen - lex24 - 01-23-2022

That is why Niners drafted Lance. You can’t defend these guys.

Mahomes and Allen, sure. We've yet to see anything close from Lance. . . .

RE: OT. Mahomes vs Allen - PVTree - 01-23-2022

What an enjoyable game. Both QBs are excellent. I was leaning towards Buffalo slightly (Horrible Harry) and thought they won it with 13 seconds, but you can't count out Mahomey.

RE: OT. Mahomes vs Allen - chrisk - 01-23-2022

If the Niners extend their Streak vs. the Rams, they will have their hands full with the AFC team.

And you didn’t see it in Allen (who some were questioning) or Mahomes (didn’t play) rookie year.  The point is the arm strength, ability to extend and accuracy, with todays rules makes these guys darn near impossible to stop.

RE: OT. Mahomes vs Allen - Blue Hawk (Mizzou) Card - 01-23-2022

From our Wyoming days, we are big Josh Allen fans. Our elder son, who played for Wyoming (though just before Josh got there), knows him pretty well. He and his younger brother, their cousin, and I watched a Colorado Rockies game with Josh at Coors Field. Very nice young man who leaves it all on the field.

After they scored with 13 seconds left, I spent the time before the kickoff screaming "Don't kick it deep!" You had to squib that kick and make the Chiefs fall on it at the ten or, far more likely, use up time returning it.

This was not Strawberry Canyon in 1972. There was time on the clock. If you give the Chiefs only time enough for two plays, instead of three, it's really tough for them to tie it. If they get three plays, one of the two best QBs in the league has a shot to tie you.

Blasted kick for a touchback is inexcusable in that situation. And I was screaming that before they did it.

Kid gets you two touchdowns in the last two minutes, including one John Elway to Emile Harry play on fourth and 13, plus an unbelievable two point conversion, and you lose it? Cmon.

What does the kid have to do for you to beat the Chiefs, coach? They have a great quarterback, too. Don't make life easier on him, for goodness sake.

Of course, someone on the Bills defense needs to make a play, too. Biut coaches should abide by the Hyppocratic (sp?) oath. First, do no harm.

If the Bengals somehow beat the Chiefs, is the sentiment the same?  (I haven't watched any of the playoffs until the 2 minute warning of the Chiefs/Bills game) and the Bengals had been a bit erratic during the season.  Has their game stepped up to another level down the stretch?

Completely agree.  That could have taken 4 or  5 seconds off clock. Inexcusable. Romo said it before the kick. Then to let Travis Kelley of all people run free over the middle.  They played scared defensively.  Got what that brings you.

Probably the best overall quarterbacked game I’ve ever seen.

Did not realize Romo said it. I was too busy screaming at the television to not kick deep.

Sports PTSD is tough. Oh well.

I guess it's possible they were worried about a big return from Hill or another speedster, but still, I like the idea of potentially burning 4-5 seconds on a return.  In the pros, can a return man player call a "fair catch" and have the ball set at 25 yard line, without clock running?  I don't think so; but if so, then that may have been what Chiefs instructed to do.  Still, I'd have given it a try.

That was a brutal L for the Bills and only adds to the complex suffered by the City of Buffalo and its fans.  Talk about jinxed . . .

RE: OT. Mahomes vs Allen - Blue Hawk (Mizzou) Card - 01-23-2022

Was Hill even in the game? I thought they sent no. 13 back to return the kick. But I'm not rewinding to check. Wounds are still open here.

A decent kick return, say to about the fifty, actually works in the Bills favor. That leaves time for only one play. Unless the return is all the way to the field goal kicker's range, that play is a Hail Mary, hook and ladder, or something else that has to go all the way to the end zone. It's possible you lose that way, but the much worse possibility, at least as I figure the odds, is giving Mahomes the ball at the 25 with time for three plays. What happened was not all that unpredictable. As I was shouting, you can't give him three plays when he only needs three to tie it, with an awesome kicker. What happened was exactly what I feared.

In our house, we have the unofficial rule that you can't  criticize a play call unless you announce before the play what you think our team should do. I was all in on squib kick on this one, as you were. We were right, I believe. Not just from 20/20 hindsight. From what gave the Bills the best chance to win the game.

I think I saw that Josh Allen is the first NFL quarterback to throw four TDs in two straight playoff games, with no interceptions. Plus he saved lots of drives with his feet, sometimes on fourth down. You can't ask him to do more.

Edit: Yes, you can ask him to do more. The bum called it wrong on two coin flips in this game. He called it right in every regular season game (on the road, because visitors call the flip). Obviously he is a regular season bum who chokes in the playoffs. ;)

I also think it’s bunk that both teams don’t get the ball.  Especially in the post season.

No on the fair catch.  And, of course, you can’t fair catch a squib kick anyway.

Agree that NFL sudden death is goofy. But them's the rules. You can't  control that.

You can control how you kick the ball.

RE: OT. Mahomes vs Allen - Phogge - 01-23-2022

1972 Strawberry Canyon... hmmmmm... Ferragamo to Sweeney.

Lex.... Lance compared to the two guys tonight? Are you kidding? He’s not the runner that Allen is and nobody does the kind of things Mahomes does.

We have a film term, B Stock. If he’s B Stock that might be enough with the roster that Lynch has put together.

I think you can fair catch any kind of kick, so long as you field it cleanly and don't try to advance it.  That's my understanding, anyway, though I haven't read the college rules on that.

One other thing the Bills could have done for sure:  get physical with receivers at LOS and don't let them off the line for free.  I mean, taken to the extreme, you rush 3 and double 4 guys going out (the 3 don't even really need to rush).  Bump till they get 5 yards past LOS, and then tackle them.  Defensive holding?  Big deal.  First down at the 30 with 8 seconds left.  Repeat.  First down at the 35 with one shot left for a Hail Mary.

The more I think about it, the more I think this one was ATROCIOUS end-game coaching.

RE: OT. Mahomes vs Allen - CompSci87 - 01-23-2022

You can fair catch a kickoff in the NFL, but you get possession at the spot of the catch. The NFL didn't adopt the fairly recent college rule change that makes a kickoff fair catch inside the 25 a touchback. That was the question.

RE: OT. Mahomes vs Allen - needle - 01-24-2022

Pretty sure Chefs-Bills was the game with the two best NFL teams.

Is Andy Reid the best offensive coach in the history of football? (I know, I know...some guy named Walsh was pretty good.)

I’d rather have Mahomes than Allen. But if Reid was coaching Allen, maybe I’d say the opposite.

An epic game. We were all screaming for a squib kick.

RE: OT. Mahomes vs Allen - Blue Hawk (Mizzou) Card - 01-24-2022

Did I say 1972?

That's  how hopped up I was. I meant 1992. [Edit: Make that 1982. Sports PTSD really is bad. I'm still not over that one, obviously. After the accidental picture came out of the official signaling to stop the clock, I have never trusted the zebras or the sports gods.]

Allen v. Mahomes is Elway v. Montana. Was it Bill Walsh who said he'd  take Montana if he got to pick a quarterback for a full game, but Elway if he only had two minutes?

Yes, Josh hasn't  won many close games this year. But he does amazing things.

Josh does more stupid things than Mahomes.  But not yesterday. And his stupid play rate is way down. I can't think of a single bone headed play in the two playoff games. If I'm right, that's pretty amazing, given all the Bills ask him to do.

Loved Elway. Love Josh. Wouldn't have traded Elway for Montana. Wouldn't trade Josh for Mahomes. It's pretty clear you get more wins with Montana and Mahomes, so you get to be happy more often with them. But it was a hell of a ride with Elway, and it's a hell of a ride with Josh. I just hope Josh gets one someday, like Elway got his at the end of his career. The kid deserves it (though, as Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry said, "Deserve's got nothin to do with it.")

I don’t think you can fair catch a squib kick. Anymore than you could fair catch an on side kick.  You certainly can grab it and stay down , giving yourself up.

Or if Allen had Hardman, Hill, Kelce, and the speed at RB.  Never seen a faster team .
