WBB: Stanford 63 -- Colorado 46 -
81alum - 02-12-2022
Preview:
We get a return engagement with JR Payne and Colorado on Sunday. The last time in Colorado we won a low scoring game by 8 points. In that game Jones had 7 turnovers and the team 22--Colorado had 15 steals. That resulted in us taking 52 shots compared with Colorado's 57 shots. That, in a nutshell, is JR Payne's defensive mentality and how she wins games.
Colorado is now 16-6, 5-6 in conference. Massey has them at 32, the NET has them at 33. That is pretty good, and is reflected in the tight game they played us in last time out:
https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=22846&pid=341204&highlight=wbb%3A+Stanford+60#pid341204
Since our last victory, Colorado has not done so well, going 3-5 over that stretch. They lost to Oregon State in overtime, lost to the Arizona schools on an away trip, split with Utah, split with the Washington schools and just clobbered Cal.
Colorado is tough to defend in that they do not depend on only 1 or 2 offensive stars--and if their defense is working they don't need them. In our loss to them a couple of years ago forward Hollingshed torched us, and guard Sherrod has sometimes been a dynamo. We held both of them in check last time we played, but Quay Miller scored 16 instead. In a low scoring game, 16 is a lot, and it shows that while Colorado players are not always prolific on offense, most of them are capable of stepping up if we focus on others.
In our victory over Colorado we scored 60--our lowest scoring victory of the season. In our three losses we scored 56, 54, and 61--so that should indicate the kind of defense we are up against. We ought to be able to keep Colorado's own offense under control, but the key to the game will be finding ways to get our own offense in gear against a suffocating defense similar to the defenses that have beaten us.
I think we are a better team than we were last time out, and Colorado no longer will have the elevation advantage. A lot may hinge on Anna Wilson, who brings a 3 game no-turnover streak into a game against a steal-oriented team. If Anna can keep it up and get a couple of steals of her own, this might be a very different game than last time out.

Thanks for a very good write up. I thought your insight into the method behind what appears to be Paynes madness was important. I’ve been trying to figure out why you would have a basic approach that can only work against a good team if your players are amped up and the other team is flat. If you believe you will always have inferior talent, your goal is to surprise people rather than win championships. That’s ok with me except Colorado’s style of play seems to lead to injuries for both teams and places physical aggressiveness on a pedestal above all other traits.
I’m digressing, though, because I deeply dislike this style of play .
The game is nevertheless important for us. A win effectively clinches the #1 seed for the PAC 12:tourney . Hopefully, we can avoid injury. The coaching staff can then focus on preparing first for the PAC 12 tourney but more importantly for a run at another Natty. That means developing players like Iriafen and Demetre who seem only a step away from being of major hellp in key games where we have (1) foul trouble or (2) injury.
FYI, i think Hamilton, Van Gytenbeek (sp?) and Agnes are already there.

Re Anna Wilson’s zero turnover streak: To me, she is to this team what Megan McClure was to the championship WVB teams with Plummer, Gray, Hentz, and Fitzmorris. Anna is not the one with the big stats, but she steadies the team and keeps it on an even keel.

JR Payne has given us problems through the years. Here is our recent record against her:
2/5/21 W 62/54, but only after we gave up a dreadful fourth quarter comeback 13-28
1/17/21 L 72-77 in overtime after Hollingshed had 32.
2/16/20 W 69-66, we avoided overtime when Williams stole the ball and heaved a shot practically from half court that went through.
1/24/20 W 76-68 in overtime. We only got to overtime after a magnificent long inbounds pass from Lacie to Prechtel for a layup with time expiring in the 4th quarter.
And who can forget JR Payne's 2015 Santa Clara team (much as we would like to forget):
11/23/15 L 58-61 We had 8 points in the first quarter, 14 in the second, and 11 in the third. 26 turnovers. Santa Clara had 24 points off turnovers and 15 steals.
IN SHORT: Payne is the Pac 12 coach who most resembles Vic Shaeffer and Dawn Staley in terms of aggressive defense. She doesn't always have the personnel to do it as well as they do, but given that the only teams we have lost to this year are teams that play that style of defense, it makes perfect sense to throw it at us whenever possible.

I actually have successfully blocked this game out.

Actually Lacie has been starting all along. Before Jump was out it was Wilson coming off the bench.

CO is clogging the paint. We need to start hitting some 3s to open them up.
Dumb foul by Brink.
Hamilton gets early playing time.

We lead 20-14 after 1. We are beating them in the turnover game with 4 to their 8.

Why did the female ref in the backcourt blow her whistle with 0.3 seconds left, before the buzzer, just as Haley tried the 3/4-court shot???

We lead 20-14 after one quarter, a much better start than our last game against Colorado.
Despite a couple turnovers in the early minutes and a couple iffy possessions, our offense is doing pretty good once we shoot the ball (at a 66.7% clip). We have five players who have scored and as more evidenced by our depth, none of them are named Brink or Jones.
We've benefited from eight Buffaloes turnovers which has led to some easy layups.
Hollingshed had back-to-back three's, but she picked up a second foul and had to sit.

I thought we should have gone for a lob into the paint for a quick put back when we inbounded it with 1 second to go in the 1st.
