MBB Stanford 39 -- Weenies 53 :•( - BostonCard - 02-25-2022

It says something that I am starting the thread.  Cal has a 7 game home losing streak.  It would be embarrassing if they broke it against us.

Men's BB: Stanford @ Cal, 5:30 pm Saturday, Pac-12 Net - Papa John - 02-25-2022

A little over a week ago, Stanford was at 8-7 in the conference with home games coming up against the mountain schools. Win those two, the latter of which was Senior Night, and Stanford would have an outside shot at claiming a first-round bye in the conference tournament. Alas, it was the mountain schools that swept their Bay Area roadies, and Stanford at 8-9 is now in 8th place and sinking fast in the standings. Stanford is a woeful 4-6 in its last 10 conference games, and the Cardinal visit the desert schools next week, where Arizona is one of the best teams in the nation and ASU has risen like the phoenix. A loss tomorrow and Stanford is pretty much guaranteed a(nother) losing conference record.

Fortunately for Stanford, their opponent on Saturday is even more woeful. Cal is 2-8 in its last 10 conference games, the only wins coming, somehow, on the road against the Oregon schools. In fact, Cal is riding a 7-game home losing streak. Stanford defeated Cal at Maples a couple of weeks ago, 57-50, but, with the goals of the aforementioned first-round bye in the conference tournament and an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament out of reach, the Cardinal are now only playing for pride, as even a bid to the NIT feels unlikely.

Back to Cal: The Bears are dead-last in conference play in scoring (Stanford is 9th) at 62.9 ppg and 7th in scoring defense (Stanford is 5th) at 68.4 ppg. The Bears obviously miss 2x all-conference player Matt Bradley, who transferred to San Diego State, and forward Andre Kelly, who was injured vs USC in late January and is out for the remainder of the season. Their leading scorer is senior G Jordan Shepherd, who is averaging 14.6 ppg, but takes a lot of shots--and misses a lot of shots--to achieve said average. However, Saturday's game will be the final home game for Shepherd and Grant Antecivich, another starter. We'll see if Cal conjures up some Senior Night magic, something that Stanford was unable to do in its previous game vs Colorado.

To add injury to insult, ESPN's BPI gives lowly Cal a 55.8% probability of defeating Stanford. Even the computers have given up on the Cardinal. Yet in the words of FDR, “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts today.” And tomorrow, Stanford plays Cal, and that's all that matters.

Beat Cal!

RE: MBB vs. Cal - BobK - 02-25-2022

Not embarrassed by the last 2 games ?

Doubt we win again this season.

RE: MBB vs. Cal - Papa John - 02-25-2022

Sorry guys, I've been busy but it looks like BC and I were starting threads at about the same time. Playing Cal is always worth two threads!

Don't want Cal to win.  However, Cal has played a lot better in the last 3 weeks.

The first game was reasonably close, the the rematch is at Haas and towards the end of the season when Haase teams fade, so my guess is the Cal staff genuinely believes they can this one.

Merged the threads.

For Pete's sake, BEAT CAL!

RE: Men's BB: Stanford @ Cal, 5:30 pm Saturday, Pac-12 Net - JJJ - 02-26-2022

I’m ready with my Casey Jacobsen jersey.
Maybe Brandon Angel (also #23) will have a good game!

Wow, there's a lid on the basket...and we suck. Down 21-4 after 10+ minutes to a bad Cal team...can we fire Haase at halftime? :-)

RE: Men's BB: Stanford @ Cal, 5:30 pm Saturday, Pac-12 Net - JJJ - 02-26-2022

Our second FG came nearly 12 minutes into the game

We are down 25-6.  To Cal.  Let that sink in for a minute.

Maples was empty last week and  not many watching now. My problem with Haase has always been offense (well that and who he plays). 2-22 from the field is obviously flukey even for us, but our players struggle to get open looks (though today have missed a few thus far). So nearly every shot seems like a low % shot. brobdingnagian difference between, say, open catch-and-shoot 3 from the corner and 3 with a hand in the face at the end of the shot clock, which the latter is pretty much all someone like Jones gets. Haase is an unmitigated disaster. Yet another moribund offense, yet another late season collapse.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like this.

This is bizarre: "of immense proportions" keeps getting randomly added to my posts (unless I'm the only one who sees them). Tried different browsers too. Something oddly glitchy here...

“H.u.g.e” is automatically changed to brobdingnagian

On the plus side, only 4 turnovers so far...

Seriously, how can anyone watching this game think the team is well-coached?  I'm almost nauseous at the thought of another season of this.

We did get to double digits before halftime.

How quickly you forget - we had a 20+ pt halftime lead on da Burrs in the 1999-2000 game at Maples. That game wound up being kal's worst-ever loss, 101-50 - but that was then, this is oww.....

Yeah, you can have really poor shooting nights, and this is clearly one. But Haase is an incompetent offensive coach. If this were a crazy outlier, fine. But it's not when you watch Haase's teams inability to consistently score season after season, as reflected by the season-long offensive stats. It's back to my point about "good looks" and "tough shots." Haase's system does nothing to create good looks on a consistent basis.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford @ Cal, 5:30 pm Saturday, Pac-12 Net - BostonCard - 02-26-2022

12 points would have been a bad quarter for the women’s team.  12 points in a half is pathetic beyond belief.  I feel bad for the players, who I am sure feel like they are capable of better.
