Women's Golf at P12 conference tournament - Spiny_Norman - 04-17-2022

The #1 ranked women's golf team wraps up its regular season at the Pac 12 tournament on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at Eugene Country Club. Stanford will be playing without defending conference champ Rachel Heck. According to the official report, she is out with an illness. Stanford's lineup will be #1 nationally ranked Rose Zhang, #15 Aline Krauter, Brooke Seay, #79 Caroline Sturdza and #94 Sadie Englemann. Angelina Ye will be the alternate.

Stanford will be in a field that includes #2 Oregon, #7 ASU and #9 USC. Interestingly, Stanford has not won a P12 tournament championship since 2014.

Even without Heck, this is a formidable lineup. Heck has mono but is expected to be 100% for regionals.

Win, thanks for the update on Heck. Her play recently had been undistinguished. I wonder if she has been suffering for some time. When I got mono between junior and senior years at Stanford, it took 9 months before I felt like I had full stamina back.

I was going by the Golfweek NCAA rankings in my initial post. Seay has not played enough tournaments to qualify. She has only appeared in 4 tournaments this year, 2 in the fall, 2 in the spring. But she'll be a key part of whatever success that the team has the rest of the season.

Brooke Seay has emerged this year as a player Coach Walker can count on to play solid golf. It takes great play to make the cut at an LPGA amateur, and she's finished top 10 in five of her last six amateur events going back to last summer.

Round 1 is in the books at Pac-12s, and Stanford is where it belongs - in first place, but only by 2 shots with a very tight leaderboard.

1. Stanford +2
2. U$C +4
T3. Washington & ASU +6
5. Oregon +7
T6. Oregon St & UCLA +8

Four of Stanford's five players are in the top 25:

T2. Zhang -1
T5. Seay E
T9. Krauter +1
T15. Englemann +2
T49. Sturdza +8

I believe that coaches are allowed to choose their five players in each round from the six who are rostered (Angie Ye is the alternate). It wouldn't surprise me if Ye played tomorrow in place of Sturdza, who finished +6 on her final six holes with a double and four bogeys.

Weather was pretty brutal today, with temps in the upper 40s/low 50s and rain all day. More rain expected tomorrow & Wednesday. Why are they playing this event in the Pacific NW this time of year????

And indeed, Ye appears to have been added to the lineup in place of Sturdza. Stanford and USC tee off at 10:30 in the rain!

Stanford Women's Golf twitter reporting that "Play will no longer resume at 1 pm. The Pac-12 will reevaluate at 3 pm with play not resuming any earlier than 3:45 pm."

I'm sure that the course is used to rain and drains reasonably well. But if they play at all today, it will be due to heroic effort by the grounds crew. Forecast for tomorrow looks to be the same - 90% chance of rain, 20% chance of thundershowers.

Haven't played anything in Mesquite and my golfing days are in the rearview mirror so it is unlikely I will every get around to that, what course strikes you as a good one there?

I doubt there will ever be a permanent home for Pac-12 or NCAA golf championships because of the great variety in courses. But they should play these championship events in locations where the weather has a good chance of being at least decent.

Second round was completed early this morning. Very very tight leaderboard at the moment both for team and individual:

T1. Oregon & ASU +4
3. Washington +5
4 Stanford +7
5. U$C +8
6. UCLA +9

5. Zhang -1
T8. Seay +2
T8. Krauter +2
T20. Englemann +4

Ye (+3) played better than Sturdza on Monday. My guess is she stays in the lineup for round 3.

Round 3 is a shotgun start at 9am. More rain and temps in the low top mid 50s expected all day.

Stanford started the final round today in 4th place, 3 shots behind Oregon and ASU. But there were only 5 shots separating the top 6 teams.

Sturdza is back in the lineup today, replacing Ye.

In the individual race, Hsin-Yu Lu from Oregon will be tough to catch. She shot a sizzling 66 yesterday and starts today with a 4 shot lead.

Observation - yesterday (day 2) was the day for Stanford to make a move. The golf course played 2 shots easier on average. Instead Stanford was the only team to post a score higher than they did in Round 1. The team is doing a good job of grinding out pars, but the birdie putts have not been falling this week.

We were 11 shots back of Oregon earlier today, but everyone (save maybe Sadie Englemann) seems to be heating up about midway through the round and we are only 2 shots behind Oregon at +5 (-2 for the day). Should be an interesting finish.

Rose Zhang is 2nd in the individual race at -2, 4 shots back of Hsin-Yu Lu of Oregon.

Even not counting Sturdza, Stanford is +9 on the front 9 with only a single birdie as I type this. No one will catch Oregon anyway. They have been solid all 3 rounds. It will be their 1st ever conference championship.

I'll point out that Stanford finished 7th in the Pac 12 tournament in 2015 when they won NCAAs. The next year, Washington and Stanford finished 6th and 7th in the Pac 12 tournament when Washington won NCAAs and Stanford was the runner up. You don't want to peak this week. You want to peak in a month at NCAAs.
