Poll: What should Bernie do? - cardcrimson - 06-30-2022

I was hoping to add a poll, but the "I want to post a poll" choice doesn't seem to work. Anyway, here it is.

What should Bernie do?

- Join the Big 10. Can't wait to get to Bloomington, Iowa City and New Brunswick.
- Join the Big 12. Leave one train wreck for another.
- Stay in the Pac 12, er 10, er 8, er 6. Heck, we might have a chance to actually win some games.
- Go independent. That's what the cool kids do.
- Give up D1 football. We've fallen and we can't get up.
- Retire. He's proven he's as effective at running Stanford sports into the ground as Larry Scott was with the Pac-??

Looks like I figured it out. The poll popped up after I posted. Odd. . ..

What he should do is resign if he can't get into the Big 20.

I lived in Bloomington for 5 years--it's a great town, and I still have family there.  I'm looking forward to catching some Stanford road games there.

Were you a Cutter?

Breaking Away (set in Bloomington) is one of my all-time favorite movies.

Oh. I didn't even see your post, Phogge.

If you take football out of the decision, or at least raise the importance of the other sports, especially non-revenue sports, does that impact your decision. . . .

"Multiple sources tell @latimes that no other Pac-12 members are expected to be added to the Big Ten at this time. Oregon, Washington, Stanford, etc. will not be following USC and UCLA."

Muir isn't going to have any decision making power on this.

Sounds about right

Option 1: wait for B1G to call, swallow pride or pretense and put best foot forward, if that fails

Option 2: consider if it’s worth piecing together a new conference with remaining scraps, if not appealing enough

Option 3: stay independent and say with a straight face that this is Stanford and we do things right, prepare for Ivy style athletics and try to compete at a high level in everything except football. We will need a *brobdingnagian* financial endowment to be able to keep the straight face.

I can live with 1 and 3

Muir isn't going to be making these decisions. The problem is Stanford doesn't have people above him capable of making them either.

At this point, the only person they have in their fold with the cold blooded killer DNA it will take to navigate this situation and knows the college sports business, is Condi Rice.

I'm very scared that a few of you chose to get rid of D1 football. Very, very scared.

Heh, I haven't heard that phrase in a long time.  And, somehow, I've never seen that movie.

Hey burger, you said you know someone on the UC Board of Regents, right?  Why would the board - that has Cal on the hook for massive stadium debt - allow UCLA to bolt without making sure Cal was taken care of financially? How could the board allow UCLA to essentially partner up with a private school instead of the flagship university of the UC system?

Do schools leaving the Pac-12 have to pay a penalty to leave?

RE: Poll: What should Bernie do? - BobK - 07-01-2022

No penalty if ucla and usc Leave 2024 thus that’s why they will wait

Not to bring politics in so delete if a mod wants but presently ucla a public California school can’t travel to a couple of states. I don’t recall which states and maybe none in the current Big 10. Ah I’m sure the powers at ucla have thought of this

Currently 20 states are on the list. Arizona and Louisiana being added in the next few months. A quick read makes one wonder if UCLA will be able to play in Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa. Arizona and Utah are on the list, though I'd imagine UCLA's contract with the Pac-12 predates the 2017 cut off. Not so much with the new agreement with the Big 10.

Whatever Muir does, he needs the buy-in of all the major donors/boosters.  I don't understand how Muir retiring at this very moment would put Stanford in a stronger position to weather the conference realignments, but I do get that people are frustrated.

Barring Big 10 inclusion, Stanford (and the rest of the Pac-remnants) should either join the Big 12 or merge with the MPSF/WAC.  Survive and advance.  After the ship is righted, we can look around and chart a better course for Stanford, but I think survival (default alive) is the order of the day right now (because we are not headed for that at the moment).

RE: Poll: What should Bernie do? - Phogge - 07-01-2022

If Stanford drops football won't it impact Title Nine? They would probably have to add more male athletes to comply with 50/50. Perhaps add varsity rugby as long as they won't have to play Cal and suffer multiple casualties, brain trauma and hurt feelings.

Phenomenal idea.

Why does it scare you. Although it would make me very sad, it’s not scary.  Having a fib I football team does not make Stanford Stanford.

But it made it a lot of fun. Sunny side of the stadium, co-eds in bikini tops and dolfin shorts, kegs in the stands, Elway finding Margerum. Great memories. . . .
