Good Riddance USC - umbra - 07-08-2022

I've attended Stanford football regularly since the early '80's, getting hooked while doing my medical residency at Stanford.  I've enjoyed the ups and downs of the different eras.  Coaches from Jack Elway through the Harbaugh/Shaw glory years.  I always thought of West coast football as being unique and special, even though we never going to match up with the SEC very well.  Still, it was great fun.

My favorite game memory against USC- I attended the overtime win in the LA Coliseum in 2011- a back and forth game where Luck brought them back time and again.  It ended in overtime when they fumbled the ball in the end zone.  I had never heard 80,000 fans silenced in an instant.  I did fear for my life leaving the game, as the USC folks are the worst poor losers

I'm digesting this latest PAC-12 news, and feeling anger towards USC in particular.  They obviously were the key to the deal, and UCLA got swept along probably not realizing the impact on their cousins at Cal, the $$$ being the deciding factor

In my life, I've learned that making decisions based only on money ends up badly.  Money comes and goes, but the value of family and friendship are what matter.  Sadly- USC is probably the least principled program in the league, and their lack of honor extends beyond athletics.

USC has always has been a scandal ridden school.  Recent scandals include central role in varsity blues, medical school dean with drugs, gynecologists scandals, social service payoffs.  Their culture their only understands money.  Their first reaction to scandal is to pay people off to keep them quiet.  Not surprising that they kept this deal with FOX and Big-10 quiet till the contracts were signed.  No chance to negotiate with the Pac-12 for a better deal.  They thought about $$$ first and never about the impact on their colleagues in the rest of the PAC-12 sports- which has a history over 100 years

I say- good riddance USC.  Enjoy your money and all the further scandals which you will bring to Big-10 country

Lets reorganize as the PAC-10 again, yes at a lower budget, but with some respect.

I'm pretty sure the Rose Bowl will still be interested in matching our champ with the Big-10 champ  on New Years Day.  I'm thinking USC won't be on the field for that game...

Welcome and thanks for the post. Agree for the most part, well pretty much every part, except that ND fans are much worse than USC fans. . . .

My favorite game at the mausoleum was the tie in '79. Kept them from a ring.

And neither will Stanford.

I had the same experience. That game was just incredible. And I had the bright idea to attend in a Halloween costume, so as we were leaving the Coliseum some USC fans let out their frustrations with fun little comments about my Cardinal (as in clergy) outfit.

It didn't feel as good-natured as the "damn you, trees" type of comments I've gotten leaving Pasadena. I'll definitely miss UCLA more.

1979 the Turk Schonert game. The most underrated QB in Stanford history.

RE: Good Riddance USC - CardinalSagehen - 07-08-2022

The entire rest of the conference needs to collude to beat the living s*** out of U$C for the next two seasons.  There would be no greater humiliation than for them to be champions on their way out the door.

I’d say let’s boot them out now, but TV won’t let it happen.

So, in their final season, the conference should schedule SC’s byes in the first and last weeks of the season, with six straight games on the road, culminating on the Palouse in late November.

Coaches should compare notes. Refs should remember who butters their bread.  Most importantly, fans in opposing stadiums need to step up their game.

I hope LSJMB has something interesting to say about this on Saturday 9/10 in Stanford Stadium.

If there were no legal issues the conference should exclude the condoms and teddy bears from all conference activities other than the actual competition.  No participation in the pre-season kick off and tip off tv programs, no highlights on the Pac 10/12 channel(s), do away with the Pac12 LA Channel.

RE: Good Riddance USC - Alvin - 07-09-2022

Can you blame USC? It's all about the TV money and the Pac-12 just wasn't cutting it and couldn't land the big contracts like the SEC and Big-10. USC had to leave for the bigger payday of the Big-10 TV rights. Oklahoma and Texas left for the SEC for the same reason.

Let's also not forget that USC carried the conference for decades.  (USC and the little 7)  USC deserved better, realignment is happening and if they didn't act now, they would have fall further behind the other elite programs. Blame the Pac-12, not the Trojans.

RE: Good Riddance USC - JohnR34231 - 07-09-2022

My favorite was the 2009 "what's your deal" game.
Games where we not only beat U$C but we kick their butts are particularly satisfying.
Of course, they are pretty rare.

RE: Good Riddance USC - Spiny_Norman - 07-09-2022

My first game at the Coliseum was 1991 when Stanford beat USC for the 1st time in 16 years. After being bullied for 16 years, Stanford finally won. Including that game, Stanford and USC are 16-16 since 1991. It's been a great rivalry and some of my highest highs and lowest lows as a fan have been watching Stanford vs. USC during that time.

In fact, the only highlight from last season (and the only game I attended) was Stanford dominating the Trojans. I'll be satisfied but a little sad if that is my final memory of a rivalry that started in 1904 and which has been played 100 times.

Sad to say that the formerly "Incomparable" LSJUMB, inspired by the legendary Arthur P. Barnes is today an 'Incomprehendable" and "Indecipherable"  shadow of what it once was.  Kinda like Cardinal football and hoops.

We've lost a lot of traditions that I really liked.  I liked the annual SJSU game, the 85,000 seat stadium, tossing the football around at tailgates, tailgates themselves, great NFL-bound quarterbacks, crappy northwest pac-12 teams and the best passing offense in the country.

Arguably we still have the tailgates and the great NFL-bound quarterbacks. The rest are in the rear-view mirror.

I disagree- USC is the bad guy here.  Despite all the wringing of hands, the league was going to get a better deal in a couple of years.  It would have been money spread around the other Pac-12 teams, but still there was more money coming.  The LA schools decided to stick a dagger in the side of their west coast brothers because they wanted more money for themselves- the rest of the league be damned.

The Trojans always acted as if they deserved better, even when they didn't earn it.  They had trouble competing with the rest of the PAC-12 over the last few decades- their glory years of the last century are way in the rear view mirror.  The way they ran through coaches was comical.

I think its a blessing in disguise to be rid of USC.  The new Pac-10 will occasionally have its champ qualify for the expanded playoffs.  They will still get out of conference matchups with the other league.  Life will continue.  Coaches might take a pay cut- an idea that is ripe for this time.  If Shaw needs to move on because he can't get by on less than $9million per year, then so be it.  There are others who would take that job at half the pay.

USC will continue to complain that the world owes them something for their greatness, as they get thumped by the beef in the B1G.

RE: Good Riddance USC - Softball Fan - 07-09-2022

I understand the animosity toward USC.  But if Stanford gets an invite from the Big 10, will they accept three times the revenue or will they refuse because of loyalty to the PAC-12/10.   IMO they take the money and run.

USC cheated and cheated and cheated their way to their conference and national championships and all their glory.  Hope they go 0-12 this year and next year and UCLA goes 1-11 this year and next year.

RE: Good Riddance USC - Mick - 07-09-2022

Last year, USC was 4-8.  Their final ranking was 74.  UCLA was 8-4 with a final ranking of #47.  Quite a few B1G teams are ranked better than USC this year; tOSU, Mich, MichSt, Wisc, Iowa, Neb, Purd, Illin, minn, PSU, Maryland...11 of 14 teams were ranked higher than USC. The travel schedule is going to be a killer, and they won't be playing in pleasant, california stadiums, they'll be playing in inhospitable, miserable, midwestern climates.

Kinda can't wait, tell you the truth.  Will USC fans be happy when they continually fall out of the Top 25?

Now that the Pac12 is diminished by USC and UCLA leaving, yes, I think Stanford would take the money. But, no, I don't think they would have considered such a thing before USC and UCLA left. When it comes to sports Stanford has never been a factory school. Sports are prioritized and important, money is important as well, but money has never been the only priority.

I’m not so sure that Stanford University sees itself as needing to bow down to the TV networks to feed their  brave new athletic world of professionalized college athletics.  The president of Stanford is a Canadian born neuroscientist.  My impression from friends on the faculty is that football is relatively low on his priority list- as it should be for a major world research university.

The fact that they were willing to cut several sports a few years ago tells you that Stanford may not be thinking of “ taking the cash and running” to join the B1G. Athletes in the Olympic sports would be taken away from campus to traipse through the Midwest to play their league matches, going against the academic style that Stanford values.  Wilner also mentions that Stanford and Cal are unlikely to embrace the idea of paying players outright.

I think Stanford would prefer to stay with an independent smaller Pac10, rather than become a vassal of FOX Sports.  Remember the joke about USC- they’d like  to have a university that the football team could be proud of?  If you sell your university’s integrity to FOX Sports, they won’t stop their need to make even more dough- gambling ventures, cheerleader strip shows- the sky is the limit baby….
