How come?!

RE: I don't see Tavita or any of our assistants on this list! - msqueri - 08-02-2022

Well it's not a long list, though that's part of the point - you have to really offer something to be a talked-about head coach candidate and our guys are pretty far off from there.

I do think it's been a shocking turn of events that Lance Anderson did not get a head coaching job somewhere, and that he doesn't have one speaks pretty clearly in my view to one or both of two things being the case. First, Shaw's loyalty/remuneration/etc. for Anderson is so disproportionate to performance that Anderson wouldn't dream to leave even for certain head coaching positions. Second, Anderson has squandered a tailor-made opportunity to get a head coaching gig because his resume has gotten less and less impressive every year. My thinking:

Fangio and Mason bequeathed Anderson one of the best situations any major college football coordinator has ever inherited. Our identity as one of the best defensive football teams in the nation was firmly established (Alabama, Florida State, Michigan State, and Stanford were the very clear preeminent defensive teams in America in that era). A decent case can be made that only Alabama returned better defensive talent than Stanford when Anderson took over. We also had a very strong culture of Party in the Backfield and Shannon Turley's maniacal motivation. All of that set him up for immense success and, indeed, two of his first three defenses were quite good and the one that wasn't played in the Rose Bowl. Add on top of that that he's one of the best men in America, one of the best recruiters in America, has deep LDS ties tailor-made for programs in several states as well as Georgia recruiting chops literally everybody would want to get their hands-on and academic chops that those with admissions standards could use, and he should have been quite a commodity. Yet, in recent years numerous jobs that would make sense for him have come open and he hasn't gotten any of them. At the major college football level, BYU came open in 2016, San Jose State came open in 2017, Oregon State came open in 2018, Rice came open in 2018 (as we know), San Diego State came open in 2020, UNLV came open in 2020, Washington State came open in 2020, Utah State came open in 2021, and Hawaii came open in 2022, and while not obvious fits Boston College came open in 2020 and Duke in 2022. At the lower level, Anderson's alma mater, Idaho State came open in 2022.

That Lance Anderson isn't coaching Idaho State or somewhere else right now tells me lower division places can't pay him like Shaw does/otherwise offer as cushy a situation (and to be fair keeping children in place for high school is part of the equation), or Anderson isn't sought after. If you told me in December 2016 that Lance Anderson would never have been hired for a head coaching job in the next half decade I wouldn't have believed you.

Pretty sure gailtate was trying to be provocative. He doesn’t think any of our assistants belong on that list.

RE: I don't see Tavita or any of our assistants on this list! - msqueri - 08-02-2022

Oh I know, I was just riffing on thoughts prompted by the post. There were times when some of our coaches would have been on the list, especially if it were a bit longer of a list (indeed Bloomgren did get a head coaching job) but this is not one of those times.

Isn't it also possible that he realizes he isn't cut out to be a head coach or that he doesn't want the headaches that come with the job? Granted, being well paid as an assistant makes it lots easier to say "No thanks" to head coaching jobs. However, there are certainly plenty of "career" assistant coaches, some voluntarily, some because they failed badly as a head coach.

At this point Anderson is an OVERPAID assistant

He's technically an associate head coach, which is usually the position at which head coaches deem their assistants worthy of being a head coach somewhere else.  He's been responsible for OLB coaching, recruiting, and DC duties, although I wish he'd focus a bit more on improving recruiting (recent sentiment on this board has not been glowing in that regard).  Hasn't Akina been a co-DC before?  Maybe he could pick up some of that.

FIVE 4* Edge players in the last 2 classes and you wish he'd focus more on recruiting?

He's responsible for overall team recruiting, not just OLB

And by various accounts may be one of the hardest-working and admissions-savvy recruiters we've ever had, not to mention reportedly responsible for the most impressive collection of talent any Stanford recruiter has been associated with aside from perhaps Bloomgren. He can't clone himself. I think it would be wildly, comically misguided to want Anderson to focus more on recruiting if that means focusing less on the part of his job he's failed at, which is coordinating a defense.

Couldn't we create a position of Recruiting Coordinator and let him concentrate on that while lifting someone else to DC.

The three options I would consider acceptable:

1. Make Lance Anderson the defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator (firing Diron Reynolds, obviously) and bring in an outside hire to be the new defensive coordinator

2. Give Lance Anderson the Ron Lynn treatment and thank him for his service but shift him from one of the positions that counts toward the coaching limit to more of an administrative and recruiting role

3. Fire Lance Anderson

In a vacuum, the first one appeals to me with a big caveat: our defense has been so bad and it's so important that a coordinator be set up for success that if retaining current defensive assistants were a deal-breaker for a good coordinator I would not let that stop me from bringing in the new hire. Given the performance of our defense, nobody, not even Anderson and Akina (both of whom arguably have recruiting value and/or other value), should be immune from a house cleaning, if that were what a good coordinator wanted to do.

RE: I don't see Tavita or any of our assistants on this list! - Softball Fan - 08-03-2022

It's my uneducated opinion about 80% of success in most college sports is recruiting.  A major jump forward may take donors offering big NIL (not the way I would want to go) or a coach who is really good at recruiting elite athletes.  Harbaugh could go into a kid's house with unlimited enthusiasm and get the kid and his parents excited about building something big at Stanford.  In today's program that recruiter doesn't have to be Shaw but it takes someone on staff with a type A personality.

RE: I don't see Tavita or any of our assistants on this list! - BostonCard - 08-03-2022

In terms of recruiting rankings, Shaw has been a better recruited than Harbaugh (even through our recent struggles).  I think the issues have been:

Inconsistent recruiting (a top-10 year followed by a year ranked in the 40’s)
Recruiting holes at key positions
Finding fewer diamonds in the rough than Harbaugh
Player development
Culture?

For whatever reason, Shaw’s results (especially post 2017) have substantially trailed recruiting rankings.  Harbaugh’s consistently exceeded them.

Injury prevention (S&C)

Good point. Certainly the number of days by starters lost to injury has gone up, in certain years, by a ridiculous amount.

RE: I don't see Tavita or any of our assistants on this list! - SamuelMcF - 08-04-2022

Look at Colorado's injury report for the past 2 seasons and tell me Turley is helping there in the injury department.

S&C =/= "lower number of injuries." The number of people who conflate the two is mind-boggling. S&C has little to do with bone breaks, fractures, and joint sprains.

S&C == "toughness, strength, explosiveness, and ability to compete throughout the whole game without getting completely gassed." Which, obviously, is lacking bad and where Turley made a significant impact.

We had KJ, Bryce Love, and 3 defensive starters go down in A SINGLE GAME (the 2017 Alamo Bowl) alone. Under Turley.

2016 Week 5, Stanford plays UW (and gets annihilated) without starting CBs Meeks and Holder and starting FB Marx. CMac gets hurt against Wazzu. Holder comes back vs. Colorado only to go down again, along with Justin Reid. Casey Tucker goes down. Francis Owusu goes down. Chryst tears his ACL in the Sun Bowl. Under Turley.

2015: Harrison Phillips tears ACL in Week 1. Shittu (who went down for the season in 2014) and Scarlett both hurt in Oregon State game. Kyle Murphy misses multiple games. Daniel Marx out for the season (lower leg). Kevin Anderson misses 5 games. Ronnie Harris misses 3. Mike Tyler and Terrence Alexander both miss 4. Under Turley.

The difference now is having no depth BEHIND the injuries (poor recruiting/development), and the players overall looking weaker (indeed the fault of S&C).

Only one quibble. It is == and !=, =/= is a syntax error. :-).
