After watching a few of the games played before today, I noticed the announcers were using a phrase that popped up with alarming and noticeable regularity:
"....the transfer from..."

Nothing like watching two USC quarterbacks play each other in the Backyard Brawl.

Yep, that's the way it goes these days.
If you see a better opportunity at another school, you're gonna grab it.
P.S. They have mentioned transfer 3-4 times in the first 3-4 minutes of the Oregon Georgia game.

I sense a new college drinking game in the offing...

Most used phrase from moms talking about the girl down the street if you are seeing a “fast” girl in ninth grade. “She has nice eyes.” Happened to me more than once.

It's not just football. I noticed the same thing with the announcers for the Texas - Stanford volleyball match. Texas seems to have a lot of "transfer from" players.

Yikes! Almost half of Starting QB’s (including a majority of PAC-12 QB’s) are transfers. That’s not really the way this is supposed to work.
I believe in giving student athletes agency to do what they feel is in their best interests. Nonetheless, looking at this outcome, I am left thinking that academics have very little to do with these calculations, and that some recalibration is needed. I am hopeful that once the extra COVID year is out of everyone’s system (that is, in two years when the then freshmen are fifth years), things might revert a bit. But I worry that we are at a new normal, one where the opportunity to start trumps any and all academic considerations.

I fear you are correct. It is (and going to be) all about getting on the field, and academic considerations be damned.

When have academic considerations meant anything to a majority of institutions that participate in FBS football?
RE: Most used phrase -

Fair. That ship sailed long ago. Still, we are talking about university affiliated programs. Yeah, I know, most teams are looking for a university that the team can be proud of. And yet, if I wanted to watch pro sports, I’d watch pro sports.

The head football coach at Clemson had a very good solution to the transfer issue(s):
1. Transfers have to sit out for a year, the exception being grad transfers.
2. If the transfer graduates in 4 years, then they retain the year of eligibility that lost while having to sit out.

I think coaches on existing contracts who transfer should have to sit out a year, too.

The immediate eligibility transfer rule was established after a vote by the NCAA Division I member schools. From the list above that Samuel has posted of P12 transfers, this process is working well enough for a majority of P12 schools. Sure, they lose some players every year. But they have a ready pool of 1000-2000 players from other schools to replace them.
In fact, the NCAA member schools are considering a rule change that would LOOSEN transfers even further.
The rule currently requires a player to sit out one year after a second entry into the transfer portal. The Division I Council is proposing that the NCAA completely get rid of the one-time part of its transfer portal rule. This change would allow players to play immediately regardless of how many times they transfer from school to school.

How many players transferred out from each school? I know ASU lost a bunch. I think it is important to look at both figures.
I like the transfer rule. If a coach can bale out without penalty, players should be able to do the same thing. If a players values academics over athletics, he can certainly factor that into his decision-making process.

The coach is a paid employee that doesn't pretend to be a student. Players are supposed to be students first, athletes second. The horse has long ago left the barn on the latter and the transfer rules will reflect that. I don't blame the coaches. They are trying to win. I don't blame the athletes. They are trying to maximize their future return by obtaining playing exposure.
I most emphatically do blame the administrators (presidents, chancellors, etc.) who have allowed their universities to become academic travesties where they admit people who want to learn football and care about little else. The student-athlete became a myth because these people allowed (in many cases helped) it be so.

And because so many people are ok treating coaching as labor worthy of pay but not viewing the actual playing as labor worthy of pay.

Clark Kerr once said in order to be successful as a college administrator you need to provide three things:
Parking for the Faculty
Sex for the Students
Athletic Teams for the Alumni

Room, board, books and tuition....somewhere between $200-$300K....maybe more. That's payment. If you don't like the transaction, get a job out of high school. Nothing wrong with learning a trade.
