Just for grins, I looked up former Stanford softball coach John Rittman, who started the softball program at Clemson and has had some success.
In his first year, they were picked to finish 10th in the ACC, and went 19-8, 5-1 in the ACC before COVID eliminated the season. In their first year, the program finished fourth nationally in attendance and fifth in attendance per game (1,544).
In his second season, Clemson went 44-8 (6th best in the NCAA), with a 29-5 ACC record. Were ranked 13th at one point.
Last year, Rittman's third year, they made the program's first Super Regional appearance, and upset #6 Washington. Rittman finished his first 100 games at 78-22, surpassing Dabo Swinney's football record of 74-26.They beat #19 Notre Dame and #2 Virgina Tech, swept #17 Auburn, Louisiana and UNCW, shutting out all three. Off the field, the team had a 3.38 gpa.

The 2023 fall recruiting class is good but in theory you need some top 15 recruits to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament. Or one really good pitcher and a pretty good second pitcher. I'm looking forward to attending some games in the spring.

D 1 Softball has Stanford ranked 11in their preseason poll.
D1 also had a great story on Stanford with lots of Allister quotes but of course behind a paywall. A quick summary;
Three great starting pitchers
More power
Very good speed
Defense will continue to be very good

Hopefully, Coach Alliser can finish 2nd in the Pac-12 this season. Last season, UCLA finished second with a 19-5 league record. Coach Alliser hasn't had a winning league record yet, so ideally, she will get her first winning league record this season.

The team starts off the season next Friday February 9 against Oklahoma at a tournament in Irvine, CA. Then Saturday they have a double header which I hope to attend. The park in Irvine with four softball fields is a fairly modern, well maintained facility.
Does the Cardboard have a softball version of 81alum to preview the opponents for the games? It would be nice to have opponent info presented in threads for Cardinal softball fans.

Stanford's #1 pitcher Vawter allows 6 hits by LMU in a 7 inning game. That's a pretty good start to the season for her.

Canady was
amazing this weekend. She also did not give up a hit against San Jose State, and the only reason she didn't go five innings in that contest was the game was over after the 1st inning.
As far as the team's performance this weekend, it was a good, but not great opening weekend. The game against Duke, where we stranded the bases loaded with no outs without scoring any runs, is a missed opportunity.
I also think we largely wrote off the Oklahoma game as a L (which as far as managing a weekend's worth of games, may have been right). But it would have been
great to see how Alana could have matched up against #1 and two time defending national champion OU.

Great for Coach Allister! Very good start over some very tough teams. I believe she's well on her way to surpassing last year's 39-22 / 11-13 records. Great to see one of Coach Rittman's team members succeed so well.
Speaking of whom, Coach Rittman started Clemson's softball program in 2019, and they're 5-0 this year. Glad to see him land on his feet.

Stanford beat San Jose State 18-0.
I agree with d4cohn it was a tough loss against Duke; two evenly matched teams. A win would have been nice but my thinking is Stanford only has to do well enough to make the tournament playoffs and then anything can happen.
Coach Allister probably did accept that Stanford would lose to Oklahoma. Perhaps also some strategery on her part. Not letting the Oklahoma batters see Vawter in case Stanford and Oklahoma hook up in the regionals or the World Series?
