MBB vs Pacific Mon 11am - P12N - winflop - 11-07-2022

Men's basketball kicks off the season this morning against Pacific at 11am on Pac-12 Networks (if you can get the channel)

This is pretty much a do or die season for Coach Haase. While I think he should have been shown the door after last season, he's our coach this season and I want him to finally succeed and punch a ticket. He's got the talent to do it, but he's had the talent before. The big question is whether he can get the whole to equal or exceed the sum of the parts for the first time in his six-year tenure at Stanford.

Is spencer Jones not playing?

RE: MBB vs Pacific Mon 11am - P12N - AlbanyCardinal - 11-07-2022

Definitely not. I missed the start of game, so maybe Monty addressed it. Hoping it’s nothing serious.

I think Monty misses coaching.

Reynaud looking great

So is Michael Jones, the Davidson transfer.

RE: MBB vs Pacific Mon 11am - P12N - Canalejas - 11-07-2022

Uh-oh.  We're on the wrong end of a massive run. The lead has all but evaporated.

RE: MBB vs Pacific Mon 11am - P12N - Hurlburt88 - 11-07-2022

looking good now . . . but boy squandering that lead hurt.  up by 9 with 21 seconds

THey just said Spencer tweaked a leg.

RE: MBB vs Pacific Mon 11am - P12N - AlbanyCardinal - 11-07-2022

Monty just mentioned that Spencer Jones lightly tweaked his leg and was held out only as a precaution. Sounds like he’ll be in the lineup in Milwaukee.

Figures that our star player would be the only one to have received college coaching not on the Farm. And this game was like a microcosm of every Haase season, minus the ending: early success followed by an inability to capitalize on it, followed by an inexplicable slump against less talented opponents.

If we are barely able to put away Pacific, I'm thinking I'll stick to our WBB team again this season and spare myself the anguish.

I'm puzzled. Our best player came TO us through the Portal? Reading the football posts on said portal, I thought it was impossible for anyone to transfer, even grad transfer, to the Farm.

Michael Jones was a revelation. 31 points!

And special shoutout to all those middle schoolers in attendance. They made for a lively small crowd.

Not impossible , just darned difficult. I think this is first ever transfer of any kind into Stanford mens basketball and he is a grad transfer..I don’t think that even requires the portal.  Football has one grad transfer now and we have had a few , a very few, in the past.

As to the game, I really liked decision to play a lot of players in a lot of different combinations. That’s much more important than winning by 20 points. And while I did not enjoy watching Pacific close the gap, that too is a good experience for this team.. so long as they win.

Didn't get a chance to watch the game, but 31 pts for any Stanford MBB player is a big deal.  Especially a new player.
And Reynaud got 22 pts on 9/11 from the field.  That's encouraging as well.

Now's the time to be paying attention.  Better now than in January, anyway. =O (hopefully, this season will be different)

Fun to watch Jones (the new one) light it up.

Turnovers really bad.

Ingram struggled to assert himself.

A mixed bag, but I will take any victory over a scrappy team like Pacific.

There were a total of 24 undergraduate transfers incoming to the entire university last year.  That is fewer than USC had on its football team alone.  Grad transfers are a very different beast, however, and we have done better in that category--perhaps we can do better than other universities since we have so many graduate students and programs.

RE: MBB vs Pacific Mon 11am - P12N - AlbanyCardinal - 11-07-2022

Yes to all your points. Jones looks to have serious hoops IQ and talent. Looking forward to seeing if/how the other Jones will continue where he left off at the tail end of last season. Raynaud showed a lot and could be a force. The turnovers are such a hallmark of Haase's teams on the Farm. Otherwise, I think Ingram is key. If he can be more assertive, as you suggested, and find more occasions to finish his drives and not just dish to the corner, he'd really open up the offense.

Zimmerman transferred from Santa Clara a few years ago, but Jones is our first transfer since the inception of the portal, although he's s grad transfer and may not have gone through the portal process.

BTW, checking other scores, James Madison leads Valley Forge 72-11 at the half.... Slight mismatch.

Wait a minute. James Madison was at Valley Forge and now he leads them?
