WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - 81alum - 11-30-2022

Let's use this thread to discuss how other teams in WBB are doing--apart from our own games with them which will receive their own threads.

For example, the discussion of UCLA and South Carolina could have gone here.  Perhaps a kind moderator would like to move it over?

If we move it, it will become the first post in the thread, because the board software always sorts posts in a thread by time originally posted. Well, I can do some finagling to work around that if we really want to just have one thread for this.

I really like the idea of having one thread for the rest of the Pac 12 -- and then the other thread we've been using could be for the rest of the country (incl SCAR & U Conn etc.)

RE: WBB: Other Pac 12 Teams 22-23 season - M T - 11-30-2022

I would appreciate a head's up when interesting games will be happening.

I don't think it is worth pulling old posts out of other threads to put them here.  Maybe new posts that someone puts in the wrong thread (to discourage replies going in the wrong thread), but not the old ones.

At this point (10:15AM), there are NO threads on the front page that is more than 3 hours old.  One more new thread and something that is 3 hours old gets hidden on the 2nd page.   Instead, we've got not-particularly-popular threads pinned that often are days or weeks old, AND positioned at the top of the page.  Several of those have a dedicated forum for the topic of recruiting but don't use it.   (Popular?  The most read of the so-called "Important threads" has 1,690 posts and 23,000 reads since January.  Compare to WVB thread, started in May with 1,660 posts and 139,000 reads (almost 6x as many reads).)

In response to the too-limited space on the front page, users are creating season-long threads (WVB, now WBB).  That's fine, but unless they get a new post every handful of hours during the US day, they'll drop off the front page.

RE: WBB: Other Pac 12 Teams 22-23 season - CompSci87 - 11-30-2022

There's a lot of difference of opinion about where to put the recruiting threads.

RE: WBB: Other Pac 12 Teams 22-23 season - CompSci87 - 11-30-2022

One of the mods merged all the South Carolina threads, including SoCar vs. Maryland, vs. Stanford, and vs. UCLA.

RE: WBB: Other Pac 12 Teams 22-23 season - 81alum - 12-03-2022

UCLA is down to UC Santa Barbara 30-21 just before halftime.

UCLA lost to South Carolina 73-64, after being tied at 47 after 3 quarters.  UCLA's guard did well but they could not stop either of South Carolina's bigs: Boston with 18 and Cardosa with 16.

RE: WBB: Other Pac 12 Teams 22-23 season - mbdude - 12-03-2022

Beavers beat Jackson st 63 53
Oregon beat Portland 90 51

Watched most of both games, not impressed with either team

RE: WBB: Other Pac 12 Teams 22-23 season - 81alum - 12-03-2022

UCLA buckled down and defeated UC Santa Barbara 68-57.  The first quarter was 20-4 UCSB.

This is not Pac12 news but didn't want to start another new thread: Azzi Fudd is out  3-6 weeks for Uconn with a knee injury suffered Sunday at ND. She's been very injury prone throughout her career and Uconn's team injury misfortune continues.  Uconn will be vulnerable Sunday at Maryland and vs Florida State in the coming weeks without her.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - 81alum - 12-06-2022

10 Iowa State will play 16 Iowa Wednesday 4:00 pacific on ESPN2.

12 Arizona plays undefeated Kansas Thursday 5:00 pacific on Pac 12 network.

That's just very unfortunate, both for Azzi FUDD and UConn.  UConn lost WCBB #1 star Paige BUECKERS
and #5 overall recruit 6'3 center Isuneh BRADY even before the season started,  starting center
6'5 Dorka JUHASZ is still currently out indefinitely with an injury, then this with FUDD now.

Gonzaga just beat Queens Univ 73-49 -- not a strong opponent for the Zags, but a great bounceback from the loss to Stanford. The Zags are a good team, and it was a good win for the Card last Sunday. Worth noting that in both the AP and coaches poll, the Zags moved UP this week despite their loss to Stanford, perhaps a reflection of the fact that they gave a good account of themselves at Maples.

I am saddened for Fudd.  Injuries are a curse on the womens' game in particular.

In the past, Geno did not have deep teams, and he was more interested in running up scores by keeping his starters in long after they were needed.  As a result, I have long thought that UConn's biggest vulnerability would be depth and injuries to key players.  They have only 12 on their roster, and so now they have 8.  Not slouches, but you know how Tara would play them if we got them today.

So I have great sympathy for each one of Uconn's injured players.  No Stanford fan can ever wish that on any other team after 1998.  But my sympathy for the players does not extend to their program or their coach.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - BostonCard - 12-06-2022

Aurillema basically played 7 players in the game against Notre Dame, and that is despite Fudd getting injured and only getting 13 minutes (an eighth player played under five minutes).  I’m the win against Iowa, he played 7 players. Even in the blowout against Providence, only nine players saw the court.

I don't agree with that philosophy, but I can see his reason to play your core players so as to get game-time experience as much as possible.  Where I think we Cardboard fans differ from him, is that we weigh the issues of risk to the core players and unfairness to the bench players more highly than he does.  He probably also thinks the mental stress he puts on them is a good philosophy for his goals.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - BostonCard - 12-07-2022

I can see some logic; you don't want to be in a position where you have to shorten your bench because it is a tight game, but your starters are not in shape to play a full 40 minutes.  That may have hurt us in the game against South Carolina, as our starters were used to playing under 20 minutes in the four or five blowouts that preceded it.

That being said, I am glad that we get to see 10+ players get substantial number of minutes in our games.

Keep in mind their practice they lift etc. Tara sees this we don’t

Nine players were all that were available to play.  Playing 4 top 10 teams in the first 7 means the bench will not play much if UConn wanted a chance to win. Against ND, once Fudd went down we were down to 8 healthy players.

RE: WBB: Other Teams 22-23 season - 81alum - 12-07-2022

Iowa State got out to a 28-23 halftime lead over Caitlin Clark and Iowa.  But Iowa had a 27-8 3rd quarter and is coasting to victory in the 4th.  They will be moving up in the polls.

Given who Geno had available, I understand his decisions this year.  What I am saying is that UConn's current problems are not entirely a matter of bad luck.  Geno has chosen not to have 15 players on the roster.  He has chosen not to widely distribute minutes of game time.  This produces a bigger drop off that would otherwise be the case when the team suffers a rash of injuries.

All that said, his decisions have obviously been the correct ones most of the time, given his overwhelming success.  Keeping the team small and feeding the elite starters all the minutes has generally worked.  But once in a blue moon it backfires, and this seems to be the blue moon year for UConn.
