WBB: Stanford 62 -- Colorado 49 - 81alum - 01-21-2023

Preview:

With the elation of the Utah win we should remember where things stood after our UCLA win.  At the Utah chalk talk it was mentioned that we have a lot of young players and the USC game was a short turnaround.   Well, we are in the same place, and hopefully we can be more ready for Colorado and its aggressive defense than we were for USC and its surprising defense.

For the second straight game we are playing for the lead in the Pac 12, since we are currently tied with Colorado, each at 6-1.  Colorado is an improved team this year and has just reentered the AP at 24.  Massey has them at 23, the NET at 22.   They are 15-3.  Their losses were a one point overtime loss @ Texas Tech, a decisive loss @ Tennessee, and a 58-85 drubbing @ Utah.  However, they defeated Utah at home a couple of weeks later 77-67, handing Utah its only loss at the time.  They also defeated Arizona by 7 points in their other notable win of the season.  Most recently, they just beat Cal in Berkeley--exploding for 30 points in the 4th quarter to come from behind.  Poor Cal, they would have won a lot more games if WBB played just three quarters.

JR Payne's teams always play physical, aggressive defense, and Payne has defeated us and given us close games from time to time, both when she coached Santa Clara and the last 7 years at Colorado.

Colorado lost Hollingshed to the WNBA and Peanut Tuitele to Cal, but gained center Vonleh from Arizona.  Other players have developed and improved, and Colorado has surprised the league by doing better rather than worse in the post-Hollingshed era--chiefly due to the emergence of Washington transfer Quay Miller.

These were the first four starters against Cal who played significant minutes:

Quay Miller, a 6'3" senior center.  She transferred from Washington last year.  Miller dumped 26 points on Cal, including going 3/6 from three point range.  Very difficult to defend a post who is hitting 50% from three point range.  On the season she is shooting 46% from three, but 3/4 of her shots are in close and she is 53% overall.  She is the leading scorer at 15 ppg.  She also leads the team in rebounding and has a ton of steals.

Frida Formann, a 5'11" junior guard from Denmark.  Formann was not hot against Cal, but is Colorado's most prolific three point shooter and second leading scorer at 12ppg.  She has made 38 of them at a 42% clip.  Like Jump, everyone knows to closely defend her, and like Jump, she has diversified her game, with about 40% of her attempts NOT being treys.

Aaronette Vonleh, a 6'3" sophomore center.  Yes they went with 2 centers.  She had 13 against Cal, and is the third leading scorer at 12 ppg.  Don't worry about three pointers from her, but she is their best inside presence at 61% shooting.  She is the low post with Miller more often being at the high post--with Miller being the better face-up shooter.

Jaylyn Sherrod, a 5'7" senior guard.  Sherrod has given us fits before--a small, speedy, quick guard who (along with Formann) was part of the team that defeated us in Colorado during our national championship year.  She had 15 against Cal.  She is point guard with a 2:1 assist/turnover ratio and leads the teams in steals.  She has taken only 19 treys this year but has made 9 of them, and that makes her three point shooting a lot better than her overall average of 39%.  But she has not been called upon to score as much as in past years.

Tayanna Jones has been the fifth starter most of the season, but she played only 11 minutes against Cal.  On the season, the player with the 5th most minutes per game is Kindyll Wetta. Jones is a 6'1" 5th year guard who transferred from Georgetown a year ago.  Wetta is a 5'9" homegrown sophomore guard.  Jones is better at rebounding, Wetta has a lot of assists--my guess is that Wetta is the backup at point.

In the past, Payne's teams have always played very tough defense but have not always had the offense to go with it.  They do this year.  They are averaging 73 ppg and outscoring their opponents by 16.  They have been forcing 18 turnovers per game.  On the other hand, they do not seem as sure-handed as in the past and give up 16 turnovers of their own.  They also have a +7 rebounding margin, but were fairly even on the boards against Cal.

In sum, we should go into this game expecting to see USC again--except a USC that can shoot the ball.   Colorado is capable of playing a tougher defense than Utah, and I would be surprised if the game looks at all like the Utah game.  We need our own defense to step up and control Quay Miller and Frida Formann in particular, and we need our midrange jumpers and treys to fall at least enough to loosen up Colorado's aggressiveness and open up the paint.

You are awesome Sir. Thanks for the post.

Great analysis, 81Alum. You lay out so well all the reasons I'm so nervous about this game. I don't think we can get the same "wow" performance from both Cam and Haley again (tho I certainly hope we do). We will need others to step up more. I'd like to see more of Fran on the floor. At times last night against Utah, she brought brobdingnagian energy to the game, including sparking better rebounding. IMHO, she's being underused -- not the best defender or on offense, but a rebounder who makes others on the team improve their rebounding.

Baez87 - Baez87 - 01-21-2023

As much as I enjoy most of the pre-game Chalk Talks given by our SWBB coaches, they are nothing in comparison to the insight we gain from one of our Cardboard colleagues, 81Alum. In fairness to our coaching staff, 81 has a different medium and can go into depth using the written word, while the coaches give a short overview and respond to questions that generally take a scattergun approach.
So I’d like to add my appreciation to the other voices on the Cardboard who have shown their appreciation for the service that 81Alum has provided us. It is balanced, fair, deep, and very helpful in anticipation of the game that lies ahead!

I share your concern. Given what we know about what Colorado brings to the game, Cam and Haley will have to work harder to get past their defenders than they did against the Utah posts. Pili was tough, but she is short. Colorado has height and strength inside, much as USC did. (I sat in the Galen Center last week and experienced the pain of that one.)
As for Fran, she is recovering from a slow-healing injury to her thumb support. I’m sure the coaches have the medical advice on how to best insure her recovery. She gets some playing time and seems to be contributing to the team effort and is well-liked (obvious from the fan responses every time she gets in or make a good play). We need to be patient, as the coaches seem to be, to ensure her complete recovery. We will definitely need her presence as the season progresses!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Colorado Sunday 2pm - martyup - 01-21-2023

Was it Hollingshed or Sherrod that grabbed Cameron by the neck last year?  The Buffaloes play with a chip on their shoulder and are quick to anger and get in an opponent's face.  Hopefully, Cameron can keep her cool and stay out of foul trouble.  I'm sure they are going to go hard at her to try to draw fouls.  We'll need Ashten and Fran to give us good minutes in the paint.

BTW, we've got to watch that Aussie Frida Foremann.  She can kill us from beyond the arc.  Hopefully Agnes can shut her down.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Colorado Sunday 2pm - CompSci87 - 01-21-2023

Hollingshead if you mean this play. But you might mean a different one! With Colorado there are a lot of hard fouls to choose from.

On Formann: Denmark and Australia are pretty far apart...

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Colorado Sunday 2pm - martyup - 01-21-2023

That was it.  Danish or Aussie, she's dangerous.

A double intentional foul?  Sigh.  Thanks, Missy.

Yeah, I thought that Cam had the right to defend herself while under attack.  The refs didn't agree.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Colorado Sunday 2pm - 81alum - 01-21-2023

Emma-Nnopu may be needed to guard Sherrod--I would have said Lepolo on Sherrod but now I don't know.  Who is our speediest, quickest player?

Lots of folks could guard Forman.  She is a deadly shooter, but is less agile and mobile than Jump.  We need to be sure we don't lose her in transition.

Who will guard Quay Miller?  It needs to be someone who can come out to the perimeter and can also control her in the paint.  Miller can put it on the floor and drive somewhat better than Brink does, but finishes somewhat worse.

I would guess that Brink guards Vonleh, the two insiders trying to neutralized each other.  But I suppose Iriafen could get her and Brink be put on Miller.

This game we need 2 bigs on the floor.  given Colorado's two centers, who are only 6'3" but neither can be guarded really by a guard.

My biggest questions:  will we see Emma-Nnopu get another start?  Will Nivar start for Lepolo, or will we be back to Jones at pg?  I don't think I like the idea of Jones bringing the ball up against Sherrod.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Colorado Sunday 2pm - CompSci87 - 01-21-2023

Nivar is quick and Tara praised her defense as well as her point guard play against Utah. So she may get the start in place of Lepolo. At least I'm sure she'll play a lot.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Colorado Sunday 2pm - BostonCard - 01-21-2023

Brink threw the ball at Hollingshead.  Completely justified in context, but an obvious call.

Any cardboarders at CO game today (meet halftime)?

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Colorado Sunday 2pm - BobK - 01-22-2023

81 and Chimera and compsci will probably be there. Welcome back. At a table down stairs near the pizza concession
I’m home in Roseville with family to watch 49ers
Get us a win in maples

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Colorado Sunday 2pm - 81alum - 01-22-2023

Yes, I will be there!  Will rush home to catch the rest of the niners afterwords.

This WBB game is critical for us.  We may or may not be able to sweep Utah and Colorado on the road, on the last weekend.  Neither of the two have lost at home this year.  So it is critical to get the win today at our place.

Baez87 - Baez87 - 01-22-2023

Yes, I’ll come by to enjoy the group's company. And, yes, we've got to win this one. I can’t believe just how competitive our conference has become.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Colorado Sunday 2pm - CompSci87 - 01-22-2023

I'm here already! (early for chalk talk)

RE: WBB: Stanford vs Colorado Sunday 2pm - M T - 01-22-2023

(There’s a Niners game today?)
It’s Sunday. I’m guessing there will be an after-the-game talk so I will stay for that.

As I sat in my car for 20+ minutes after Friday’s game waiting for the parking garage traffic to move, I was thinking I would favor a postgame meetup of Cardboard people.

We can try to sit together at the behind the bench talk. The BTB should space out the traffic some so it should be easier to get out of the garage this time.
