WGolf - 2023 thread - Spiny_Norman - 02-10-2023

The defending national champion Stanford women's golf team kicks off its spring season this Sunday to Tuesday at the Therese Hession Regional Challenge at Palos Verdes GC in the LA area. The field also includes #5 Oregon, #6 San Jose State, #8 Texas, #13 Arizona, #15 USC and #18 SMU.

The lineup looks different than what we have seen in the fall. Stanford will play Rose Zhang, Megha Ganne, Sadie Englemann, Kelly Xu and Angelina Ye. Missing - Rachel Heck and Brooke Seay. Caroline Sturdza had been playing in the 6th spot but she is not in the lineup either. I don't know whether the absences are related to competing events, injury, illness or what. Perhaps Winflop has some insight.

Stanford only plays 5 tournaments (including P12s) leading up to NCAA regionals in May so each one is an important test and building block. The goal is to peak in May when it really counts, as the team did last year.

Interesting lineup. LPGA has its tournament of champions so no conflict there. 

Sometimes Coach Walker mixes things up early in the season to get players some tournament experience. Post-event I may get a chance to ask her or her assistant coach

Jamesy said that the team has been beset with injuries. But we are not aware yet specifically what's going on with those 3 players.

Stanford sits tied for 2nd after round 1 with Ohio State and San Jose State, 4 shots behind Baylor.

Individually,
Zhang shot 68 (-3) and is T2
Ganne shot 70 (-1) and is T10
Englemann shot 74 (+3) and is T38
Xu shot 74 (+3) and is T38
Ye shot 76 (+5) and is T56

The team starts today at 10 am.

TBD but maybe having Xu & Ye in the lineup wasn't the best option...

There are only 10 girls on the roster. Apparently Heck, Seay and Sturdza are not available. That means that the roster is down to 7 players.

Zhang, Ganne and Englemann are playing. That leaves Xu, Ye, Lu and Becht as the only other options. No idea on the status of Becht and Lu. Maybe they are fine but got beat in qualifying by Xu and Ye.

The ladies caught fire down the stretch and jumped into first place after Round 2.

Individually, Rose Zhang is in her usual spot with good support. Kelly Xu played solid today, nearly 4 strokes better than the average for the tournament
1. Zhang - 6
T5. Ganne -2
T19. Xu +3 (!!)
T42. Englemann +7
T55. Ye +9

Final round shotgun start at 8:15a tomorrow. Stanford starts on holes 1-5 and is playing with SJSU, U$C, and Ohio St

Oregon shoots the lights out in the final round to win by five. The tournament was decided on the final two holes - Oregon was even while Stanford was +12 (gulp!). I have no doubt that with their normal lineup, Stanford would have won
1. Oregon +6
2. Stanford +11
T3. Baylor & U$C +12

Rose Zhang wins again despite opening with bogeys on her first two holes. Megha Ganne seems to have already adjusted to the college game with another Top 10 finish. Kelly Xu's T37 is a respectable finish for her first college event away from Stanford.

T37. Englemann & Xu +9
60. Ye +15

I'm starting to increasingly believe that Zhang will turn pro after this year, especially if she wins another individual title. She will almost certainly set the school record for tournament wins in only two years (compared to the others who took 3 or 4). There's really nothing left for her to do in college golf.

Next up is the Battle of the Bay at Cordevalle in San Martin next Tuesday, followed by the Juli Inkster Invitational at the Meadow Club in Fairfax Mar 6-7.

The women are playing a dual match against San Jose State today at CordeValle. 6 singles matches. Sturdza is playing. Heck and Seay are not.

Looking at the scores, I think it was howling pretty good. I was supposed to play Stanford today but saw the trees blowing all over the place and decided against it.

Also looks like Rachel Heck & Brooke Seay are still injured.

Match came down to the final hole. Caroline Sturdza lost 2up and SJS won 3.5-2.5. Not bad given that two of our top four players are out.

San Jose State is a legit top 5 team. They return 4 of the 5 players that lost in the national semifinals last year. But you have to cringe that #1 and defending NCAA champ Rose Zhang bogeyed the final hole to give her opponent (a frosh from Sweden) a tie (on the day that Zhang was named P12 Golfer of the Week).

Englemann was the star: 5 birdies and no bogeys over 15 holes, winning 4-up against an opponent who was 1 under par. That's a great round on any day, let alone a tough day. Zhang tied with a par round, and Ganne lost with a 1 over par through 17.

A clear drop-off to the reserves, however: over 18 holes, Xu shot +3 and Sturdza +6 (Xu won). Ye was +8 over 13 holes, at which point her match mercifully ended. Let's hope our 2 injured players heal and can return to top form by the NCAAs!

I hope that Seay can return this season. Sounds like Heck is out for the duration.

Concussion leads me to suspect a bike accident. I remember Albane Valenzuela's freshman season nearly derailed by a bike accident in March. She suffered a concussion with injuries to her wrist and knee. She was able to return within a month.

Wow that's some really crappy news for Heck. That bout with mono seems to have had some lingering effects on Heck. Even if she can't come back this year, she's still got next year too.

Seay's situation sounds a lot more temporary. She might miss another event or two but she'll be back when things heat up for Pac-12s and NCAAs. Last year she was really the rock that the team needed to win it all. If I could only have one of her or Heck in the lineup I'd take Seay.
