Bob - whose rankings are those?

Looks like there is a Big Three in the upcoming class. I have seen all three in lists of top 2023 draft prospects, with the two pitchers the highest (Vochko circa 100, Keenan 150). Getting all three to enroll would go a long way towards the ensuring the quality of the next cycle of Stanford baseball.

Working on a preview of the 2024 team.
Spoiler - there's potential for the team to invert its nature and become a pitching first, small-ball scratch-out-runs kind of team.

Perfect Game is my source. But I subscribe to BA and read D1

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - BobK - 06-24-2023

Just a bit on recruiting. Stanford has 11 commits for 2024, one is # 15 in BA's mock draft another # 46.
For 2025 Stanford has 6 commits and for 2026 Stanford has 7 commits.

For those who thought Football is rolling. :)

Bob, do you have a sense of what sort of kid will go pro vs go to college? I heard that kids who commit to Stanford hurt their draft stock because it is more likely they’ll go to college, though I know there are exceptions.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - BobK - 06-24-2023

Yes Stanford commits have proven hard to sign. However there is always conversation about “what will it take “.

Take Harrison Giants AAA who committed to ucla. Family gave a figure the Giants met it

Bob,

You only show 10 recruits in post above and one apparently will be on a football scholarship. Curious to know if the number of recruit is a reliable indicator of how many are leaving this year.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - BobK - 06-24-2023

Above is 2023 Treetop. :) yes 9/10 coming in but suspect Hampton will be playing baseball. He committed somewhere for baseball before football

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - cardfan77 - 06-24-2023

I also see Stanford switching to a situational and small ball team. Assuming everyone who is draft eligible enters the draft, we are losing all of our power hitter except for Montgomery and Moore. It would be an incredible get if we both sign Keenan and Volchko. I’m excited for future. Can’t wait for next spring.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - CTcard - 06-25-2023

Here is a summary of what I am thinking about next year’s team.

Losses:
Of course we don’t really know yet who will be moving on. Strictly speaking I don’t think anybody has to leave as the seniors have a COVID year option. However, we know most with good draft prospects will go and I would assume seniors as well. The core of this team is juniors, so there could be a very high turnover this year.
Key players who are juniors or seniors are (listed in roughly order of draft prospects):
Seniors: Matthews (p), Cobb (ss), Meier (p), Lopez (p)
Juniors: Troy (3b,2b), Rios (of,c), Park (of), Bruno (p), Bowser (3b,2b), Graham (1b), Dowd (p), Dixon (p), Pancer (p), O’Rourke (p)
The guys in bold I have seen on most top 500 draft boards and am assuming they leave. I have seen Dowd on a couple, but not the other pitchers. Also, Rios fairly high on some lists missing on others, probably depending how much work the list makers did to update during the season.
Hopefully some (several?, all?) of the junior pitchers not bolded will return.

Incoming Frosh:
As noted by Bobbk, there seem to be a Big Three among our incoming recruits. The top two recruits seem to be righty pitchers Volchko and Keenan. I’ve seen Volchko typically in the low 100s in prospect lists for the draft, and Keenan mid-100s. The third is the outfielder Reynolds whom I have seen on some draft lists (300+).
There are lots of roles up for grabs on next years team, so these guys (and others) could be key.
The class as listed in Perfect Game has 10 players: 6 pitchers, 2 outfielders, a catcher and an infielder.

Returning Starters:
Not many. Braden Montgomery (of) and Malcolm Moore © are stars. Jake Sapien was improving as DH until he got hit in the face in the first regional game. Pitching, Scott started out great and faded while Dugan started out rough and came on strong, but I think both can be classified as starters. If Dixon were to return that would be another returning starter, and an important one.

Players we’re looking to step up:
Uber (p) started 10 games as a frosh and had a good season. This year struggled and I heard there were injuries. Has enough of an arm he could be a major contributor.
Becera (ss) and Campbell (of) started most of the final seven games. While I decided that didn’t get them on the list of returning starters, it definitely puts them at the top of the list of guys expected to step up next year. Both hit about 0.320 in the NCAA Tournament.
Haskins (if) – it seems that the coaches were expecting him to take a starting role this past year, but mono and injury set him back.
Nati (3b) – early on kept hearing that the coaches thought he would be a great offensive force, but it never really happened this year (avg 0.114). Maybe next?

So, the team for next year,
Pitching Staff:
Taking the (excessively) positive approach that the non-bolded guys above return, we have …
Potential Starters: Dixon, Scott, Dugan, Volchko, Keenan, Uber.
Bullpen: Dowd as closer, Pancer, O’Rourke, O’Haran, Moore, any one above not starting, someone among the other 4 incoming frosh pitchers.
There’s plenty of potential there but also downside. It’s reasonable to envision 4 starters and a usable bullpen of 8 guys. With good development, this could be an outstanding group. If none of the juniors return, the younger guys don’t develop and the frosh aren’t as good as hoped – then the staff will struggle but those caveats will always hold.
Lineup :
Lots of turnover here. To some extent trying to predict the batting order is impossible, but here is a batting order among guys we know something about:
Campbell, Becerra, Montgomery, Moore, Sapien, Nati, Reynolds (fr), Haskins, TBD
I couldn’t quite get to nine. Power will be much less than the last couple of years barring significant development. The first 5 guys listed have shown at least stretches as productive hitters at Stanford.
Positions:
Outfield: Montgomery, Campbell, Reynolds.
Infield: Sapien (1B), Haskins (2B), Becerra (SS), Nati (3B)
Catcher: Moore

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - BobK - 06-25-2023

Awesome CtCard. Thanks. Need about 5 Frosh to be big contributors. Plus a couple of hitters who didn’t play or play much to step up. Yes that’s asking a lot

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - PVTree - 06-25-2023

Although improbable, I'm hoping Rios and Bowser return.

Troy, Park, and Graham (as well as Cobb) are gone.

Bowser may want to leave after having a better year so he could stick around for his senior year. Rios may enjoy returning after being the P12's POY (he should go as he may not be able to go any higher in value as he has today).

I think we may have as many as 3 true frosh playing regularly in the lineup if only Montgomery and Moore return (asking with Becerra and Campbell).

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - PalmTree - 06-26-2023

Since discussion has shifted to the '24 season, how about inching it a tad further with a bit on '24 recruiting?  Austin Steeves, LHP (Casa Grande HS, Novato) named CA Pitcher of the Year  with a self reported 4.16 GPA - FOUR.POINT.ONE.SIX......

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - BobK - 06-26-2023

Austin Steeves. Lol well he isn’t a Stanford commit Yet

Oops, thanks - now corrected. Didn't say he was a commit. I mentioned it because I'd <hope> we're looking at him....does anyone know if we are?

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - BobK - 07-08-2023

The draft starts tomorrow Sunday. brobdingnagian affect on Stanford and the next season

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - cardfan77 - 07-09-2023

Historically MLB teams are not a fan of Stanford commits. They are typically drafted lower than their projections since most Stanford commits end at Stanford. I hope the same holds true for Keenan ans Volchko. We need quality pitchers.

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - BobK - 07-09-2023

Volchko is projected 2nd round , Keenan 4th round My hope is they and families have said very recently it’s Stanford

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - BobK - 07-10-2023

Rios 3rd round # 79 to the Angels.
Troy 1st round to the D Backs

Quinn Mathews 4th round # 122 to St Louis

RE: Stanford Baseball 2023-2024 - StanfordMatt - 07-10-2023

Through 144 picks (Rd. 5), it looks like no Stanford commits have been picked yet. Is that right, Bob?
