Harbaugh Suspension - Goose - 07-25-2023

Surprised this isn't already a thread here. The 4 game suspension (if that is what actually happens) at the beginning of the season is probably a bit of a "nothing burger" as Rutgers is the only game that actually "counts". Still, an interesting event. Some assistants also getting a 1 game suspension.

That was an expensive burger.

I wonder why the NCAA still exists.

You can openly pay players, but not in hamburgers? Sorry hamburger. Singular.

It will be fun watching Harbaugh burn it all down. Someway. Somehow.

*Yeah, it's always the lying that gets you more than what you did.  Good lesson kids!

I’m thinking it was a double bacon cheeseburger.

but did it include a side of fries????

RE: Harbaugh Suspension - PVTree - 07-28-2023

Don't know about the fries, but I'm sure it had a double portion of EUTM.

RE: Harbaugh Suspension - OutsiderFan - 07-28-2023

And people question the legitimacy of the NCAA...

First it's hamburgers, then maybe fries and a shake. Before you know it, recruits are getting linguine and clams, on their way to filet mignons, maybe even lobster tails. The horror! How could college sports ever survive if recruits get free meals. Without a crack enforcement body to punish and thwart rule breakers, it would be total anarchy. Nobody's going to dare pay money to get recruits if they can get pinched for giving someone a burger. Thank you, NCAA. What would our world be without you?

RE: Harbaugh Suspension - jacket3ree - 07-28-2023

It starts with a hamburger, moves to tails of lobster, and those gateway drugs eventually lead to [gasp] free shoes.

But a university can give away sham degrees (looking at you Tarheels) but whatever, not in our purview.

RE: Harbaugh Suspension - 82 Card - 07-28-2023

If a burger is too much, where's the line? What if a player at practice on a hot day is at the cooler, sees a recruit standing around sweating and tosses them a bottle of water, is that now a violation? What if the team has a training table and the recruit joins them to hang out with the team? In the mean time, the school can buy the recruit off with a group NIL deal and that's OK.

Not lobster tails. Crab legs: https://www.espn.com/nfl/draft2015/story/_/id/12739843/jameis-winston-florida-state-seminoles-says-crab-legs-were-given-not-stolen

RE: Harbaugh Suspension - Mick - 07-29-2023

The irony isn't lost on me. When my son was being recruited by NCAA teams for their varsity volleyball programs, they couldn't and didn't buy him anything and the trips were on our nickel. He visited Cal, which didn't have a varsity volleyball team, but a very competitive club team which recruited players regularly. Not only did the coach buy him a burger (and fries, heaven forfend), but he practiced with their team.

The NCAA's rules are just crazy...

RE: Harbaugh Suspension - M T - 07-31-2023

I don’t think the rules are crazy. If you recognize the intent of having a level playing field, then why should the big pockets school be allowed to spend lavishly while the somewhat less affluent school doesn’t?  (Then there’s the whole thing about money to be made by gambling & influencing teens & young adults)

If you recognize that, then where’s the line?  The NCAA, composed of member schools, has been setting that line and trying to enforce it. If a school wants to spend money on a Rubik’s cube champion, that’s got no impact on the level playing field for NCAA competition.

And, as someone pointed out, this is about lying to the NCAA investigators, not about the amount.

Yes, the Football Daddy Warbuckses can quit the NCAA and go play with themselves,
But while they are part ofthe NCAA, they have to play by the rules set by the NCAA members. The ability to investigate is critical and attempts to subvert that are going to get penalized.

If the rules aren't crazy, why have you come pretty close to the current definition of NIL.

The actual rules around NIL itself aren't so crazy. The complete walking away from enforcing those rules is kind of crazy - but given the high likelihood that any attempt at enforcement will bring a lawsuit, and apparently the NCAA would loose that lawsuit, I guess I would switch this to the category of heavily lamentable rather than crazy.

p.s. The NCAA does have a lot of crazy rules, but that is largely because so many programs spend so much time trying to get around the spirit of each and every rule (i.e. cheating) leading to the rules being spelled out with ridiculous detail.

p.p.s. The NCAA does a lot more than develop recruiting and eligibility rules. Among the tasks is setting the rules of play. If one were to abolish the NCAA, by necessity it would have to come back under another name. Even if one were to move to the cumbersome mode of separate rules body for each sport, that would still really just be an even more Byzantine NCAA by many other names.

I completely agree. I think that whenever you see a ridiculously detailed or petty NCAA rule, it mostly likely exists because somebody abused a weakness in the rules in the past.

RE: Harbaugh Suspension - Sam Leopold - 08-22-2023

The NCAA rejected the 4-game suspension agreement, and for a while it was unclear which if any games Harbaugh wouldn't be permitted to coach.  Now Michigan has consigned Harbaugh to watch East Carolina, UNLV and Bowling Green from his living room.

Michigan self-imposes 3-game ban for Jim Harbaugh - ESPN

Derrick Crawford, the NCAA vice president of hearing operations, released a statement on the NCAA's behalf earlier this month, saying that this is about a lot more than a cheeseburger.  Also it is indicated that the real penalty for whatever Harbaugh's recruiting and coaching violations during the Covid-19 dead period were might not land until 2024.

RE: Harbaugh Suspension - Vandelay - 08-22-2023

How does Michigan get away with that joke of a non-conference schedule?

Because they are in a super awesome conference that's on TV all the time in good time slots and everyone knows it so it doesn't matter who they play as long as they come out on top of that super awesome conference even if there are only two or three really good teams in that super awesome conference.

Am I doing this right?

some others have challenging non-conference schedules as well....

Ohio state plays Youngstown St, Western Kentucky, and ND (so one "good" opponent)

Alabama plays Middle Tennessee, Texas, South Florida, and Chattanooga (also one "good" opponent)

Clemson plays Charleston Southern, Florida Atlantic, ND, and South Carolina  (two "good" opponents, but one is a traditional rivalry game and ND is sort of a conference game since they paly five ACC teams a year)

USC plays SJSU, Nevada, and ND (one "good" opponent who is a traditional rivalry game)

Georgia Tech plays SC State, Bowling Green, Ole Miss, and UGA (two "good" opponents, one a traditional rivalry game)

and of course we play Hawaii, Sac St, and ND (one "good" opponent, maybe for the last time....)
